Maria Edgeworth is often considered either the 'Irish Jane Austen' or the 'female Sir Walter Scott,' although her writing actually influenced both. Her novels and stories fall into three categories: sketches of Irish life, commentary on contemporary English society, and instruction in children's moral training. Published between 1796 and 1834, her work is characterized by both a Scott-like Romantic attachment to the past and an Austenian wit and rationalism.
The English-born Edgeworth was the second of 21 children (by four wives). Her father was Richard Lovell Edgeworth, who held both an Irish estate and progressive ideas on education, particularly on the shortcomings of female education. Maria Edgeworth was schooled in Derby, England, and then in London. Her father believed that education was central to the construction of the "new" individual of the 18th century, who would rise on merit rather than birth an idea derived from and also spurring the revolutions in politics and philosophy in the late 1700s.
In 1782, Edgeworth went to live with her father at Edgeworthstown in Ireland to serve as his property manager. Here she collected material for her novels about Irish landlords and peasants, but she also ingested his theories of education. Thirteen years later, Maria Edgeworth's first published work appeared: "Letters for Literary Ladies," a plea for women's education reform. She would later collaborate with her father on

Introduction
In A Room of One's Own (1929), Virginia Woolf famously claimed that, in order to write, a woman needs her own income and her own room. Woolf also imagined that Shakespeare had a sister. As creative as this sister might have been, her life in Renaissance England would have denied her every opportunity to write, to be an artist like her brother. Some women of that period did write, and some of that writing remains: The journals of Margery Kempe are in print today, and Elizabeth I left written records of her reign. But the fact remains that until the 18th century, literacy rates among women were low, and evidence of women's writing is sparse.
Woolf also claimed that a revolution in literature began with the simple fact that in the 18th century, the middle-class woman began to write. In the English canon, we might move Woolf's date back a few years. Although Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) is generally considered the first English novel, some critics prefer to give that distinction to Aphra Behn's

Maria Edgeworth and Classical Political Economy William Kern, Western Michigan University Amongst economists the name Edgeworth is a familiar one owing to the significant contributions of the British neoclassical economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. But what is less well known is that F. Y. Edgeworth was not the first in the Edgeworth family to have a considerable interest in economics. His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family. Maria was born in England, though she lived most of her life in Ireland. The family had owned property in Ireland for nearly two centuries when on Maria's fifteenth birthday her father, Richard Edgeworth, moved his family to the family mansion at Edgeworthstown. Edgeworthstown was her home until her death in 1847. The family estate was a large one involving a myriad of activities including the assignment of leases, the collection of rents, and the improvement of the land. In addition, as the most significant property owner in the hamlet, her faather also had a degree of political influence and obligations. As one of the eldest of the twenty-two children which Richard Edgeworth fathered, considerable responsibility fell to Maria both in conducting the affairs of the estate and in educating her siblings. She was, in the words of one of her biographers, "his right hand." As a result, she acquired a familiarity with economic and political matters rare for a woman of her age.

Maria Edgeworth was born on Jan. 1, 1767, the second of the 21 children (by four wives) of Richard Edgeworth, whose family supposedly came from Edgeware, England, to Edgeworthtown, Ireland, about 1573. Richard Edgeworth was a model landlord, living on his estates and improving them. Maria's mother died when she was 6, and within a few months her father married again. Maria was happy with all her stepmothers, the last being 20 years her junior, and spent her whole life surrounded by her family, never even having a room of her own. She worked in the living room at a desk her father made for her, writing on folio sheets she sewed together in chapters. When she was 16, Maria became her father's secretary and accountant. Edgeworth was devoted to J.J. Rousseau's ideas and brought up his children on Thomas Day's

http://www.historyswomen.com/thearts/MariaEdgeworth.html
Maria Edgworth English Novelist Maria Edgeworth was a English author in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries who not only wrote, but worked vigorously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants during 1845. Growing up in the landed gentry of Ireland , she used her experiences to write her novels about the Irish. Maria Edgworth was born in Berkshire , England on January 1, 1767 the daughter of Richard Lovell Edgworth, a noted inventor and author. Her mother died when she was only six years old and she was sent to school in Derby when she was seven and remained their until she was fourteen. Her father placed much importance on his daughter’s education, hoping she would be able to contribute something of substance to the world. While attending school Maria became a extraordinary story-teller and writer. Her early attempts at fiction were a bit melodramatic, but as she grew-up her literary skills grew also. When she was still a young teen, Maria indicated her taste for literary pursuits and never seemed to wish to be married. She stayed on at home with her family, and her father assisted in developing her talent. When she was fifteen years old her father inherited Edgeworthstown, the family estate in Ireland , where they moved. There in Ireland , under her father’s direction, she pursued her studies, formed habits of sharp observation, and developed a cheerfulness that always made her beloved in society. Maria acted as his chief assistant and secretary in the management of his estates and it was here that she gained the intimate knowledge of Irish peasant life that was the basis of many of her novels.

What Some Women Should Not
Have Said About Jane Austen
A Male Voices Web Page Jane Austen is a great favorite with women and always has been. However, it simply isn't true that she is a women's novelist only. That never was the case; Jane Austen was recognized and acknowledged from the earliest times by men of her own generation. It is only recently that some confusion has developed over this matter. It is not my purpose to understand the source of that confusion; rather, my goal is to clear the air by supplying clear evidence of male voices in praise of Jane Austen. I have done that, for example, with the quotes of Walter Scott Richard Whateley Thomas Macaulay E. M. Forster ... C. S. Lewis , and so many others. On the other hand, there were men, such as Mark Twain and D. H. Lawrence , who "didn't get it" and that fact might be used to undermine my main contention. For that reason, I will use this space to show that a number of women didn't get it either and so, in that kind of perverse way, I reaffirm the great Jane's gender neutrality. One word of warning - this posting causes pain and creates anger. In one particular case, there is a great deal of pain for all of us. Also, you might be a bit anguished by another quote which only gives me a good giggle (
