Chastity is the cement of civilization and progress. Without it there is no stability in society, and without it one cannot attain the Science of Life.
Eddy, Mary Baker
Chastity

Is civilization only a higher form of idolatry, that man should bow down to a flesh-brush, to flannels, to baths, diet, exercise, and air?
Eddy, Mary Baker
Civilization

Disease is an experience of a so-called mortal mind. It is fear made manifest on the body.
Eddy, Mary Baker
Disease

Error is a supposition that pleasure and pain, that intelligence, substance, life, are existent in matter. Error is neither Mind nor one of Mind's faculties. Error is the contradiction of Truth. Error is a belief without understanding. Error is unreal because untrue. It is that which stemma to be and is not. If error were true, its truth would be error, and we should have a self-evident absurdity namely, erroneous truth. Thus we should continue to lose the standard of Truth. Eddy, Mary Baker

Church of Christ, Scientist
General Information Christian Science is a religion emphasizing divine healing as practiced by Jesus Christ; its tenets were formulated by Mary Baker Eddy. In 1879, Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with its headquarters in Boston. Today it has about 3,000 branch churches, societies, and college organizations in more than 50 countries. While the branches are democratic in government, they all conform to the rules laid down in the Manual of The Mother Church (1895) by Eddy. Sunday services consist mainly of readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1906), the textbook of Christian Science written by Mary Baker Eddy. Wednesday meetings include testimonies of healing from the congregation. The church has no ordained clergy. Readers, both men and women, are elected from the membership to conduct the services. Practitioners, also both men and women, devote full time to the work of spiritual healing. Christian Science teaches that God and his spiritual creation are the only realities. God is regarded as infinite Life, Truth, Spirit, Mind, and Principle. The material world, with all its suffering, strife, and death, is considered to be a misconception or distorted view of the divine universe. Christian Science claims to prove through the healing of disease and other difficulties that the understanding of God and his spiritual creation is as effective now as it was in Jesus' time. Its adherents therefore rely on divine law in times of sickness instead of resorting to medical and other material means. The right of Christian Science parents to withhold medical treatment from their children has been challenged in court.

History of the Church:
Mrs. Eddy (as she is referred to by church members) was a student-associate of Quimby until his death in 1866. Her health initially improved under his care, but she later suffered a relapse. Shortly afterwards, she fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured herself. Some did not expect her to survive. On what she believed to be her deathbed, she read one of Jesus' healings. She suddenly realized that healing comes not from internal bodily processes, or from the power of a person's mind, but from the Divine Mind, God. She was instantly cured! Mrs. Eddy withdrew from society for three years in order to concentrate on a deep search through the Bible and discover precisely how her healing had taken place. She wished to share this knowledge with others, and to give them the tools to take away sin and achieve health. Mrs. Eddy then wrote her main book, Science and Health , later called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures . The book has since been published in 17 languages, and is available in English Braille, on audio cassette, CD, and in software packages.

Yet when we read i n texts of Science and Health up to the 33rd edition there are quotations from the sacred Hindu text The Bhagavad Gita as well as allusions by Mrs. Eddy to Hindu philosophy. These were omitted in later editions, causing modern-day Christian Scientists to be unaware that their founder gleaned from Hindu philosophy."

A wicked mortal is not the idea of God. He is little else than the expression of error. To suppose that sin, lust, hatred, envy, hypocrisy, revenge, have life abiding in them, is a terrible mistake. Life and Life's idea, Truth and Truth's idea, never make men sick, sinful, or mortal.
Chastity is the cement of civilization and progress. Without it there is no stability in society, and without it one cannot attain the Science of Life.
Disease is an experience of a so-called mortal mind. It is fear made manifest on the body.
Give up the belief that mind is, even temporarily, compressed within the skull, and you will quickly become more manly or womanly. You will understand yourself and your Maker better than before.
Happiness is spiritual, born of truth and love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it.
Is civilization only a higher form of idolatry, that man should bow down to a flesh-brush, to flannels, to baths, diet, exercise, and air?

MESSIAHS AND PROPHETS MARY BAKER EDDY (1821-1910) Out of a life marked by illness and the death of loved ones. Mary Baker Eddy developed an elaborate metaphysical religion which denied not only the reality of pain but the existence of the grave. She called it Christian Science. Born Mary Morse Baker in Bow, N.H., in 1821, she was a child of the starchy, repressed world of Victorian New England. She poured her innermost feelings into florid verse, suffered from nervous seizures, and was sick most of the time. Her childhood was shaped by a strict, authoritarian father and by a mother who believed her daughter had been divinely touched while still in the womb, and they treated her accordingly. When the regimen of regular schooling proved too much for Mary's frail constitution, her education was continued at home. Pampering, however, did not prepare her for a series of personal tragedies. While still a young woman she buried her mother, a doting older brother, a fiance, and her husband of one year. Her infant son was handed over to friends to raise. Her next marriage was to a philandering itinerant dentist-a union which caused Mary further mental and physical anguish due to her husband' general absence. Between bouts of invalidism brought on by a mysterious spinal condition, she taught school, had several poems and essays published locally, and shared New England's fascination with spiritualism, mesmerism, health fads, and miracle cures.

MESSIAHS AND PROPHETS MARY BAKER EDDY (1821-1910) It was the turning point. For the next 10 years she lived in a series of boardinghouses and private homes, telling all who would listen about her insight into the true nature of mind, body, and religion. She expanded on Quimby until she arrived at a cosmology that declared God to be both male and female, hailed the superiority of spirit over the physical world, and placed Infinite Mind at the center of the universe. Pain and sin, she explained in her book Science and Health, are mere "mortal illusions" that evaporate upon exposure to an acceptance of cosmic truth. All this struck a responsive chord among New Englanders, especially the educated, well-to-do city women. The founder settled into a Boston brownstone that became her living quarters, classroom, and lecture hall, as well as headquarters for her burgeoning movement. In time she chartered the Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. In eight years the church went from one 50-member congregation to 20 churches, 9 societies, at least 250 practitioners, and 33 teaching centers throughout the U.S. At age 56 Mary Baker was married for the third and last time. Asa G. Eddy, a traveling sewing-machine salesman, served his wife's organization as business manager and financial counselor.

Christian Science is founded on the belief that through study of the bible and right living, one can rediscover the healing power that Jesus used. Known as the First Church of Christ, Scientist, it was founded in Boston in 1876 by Mary Baker Eddy. It is based on the belief that one maintains a healthy mind and body through study of God (the all loving Father-Mother) as the only reality of existence. Evil and illness can be overcome through the maintenance of a healthy mind and body. Churches are in over 74 countries. The term "Christian Science," as defined by the founder, Mary Baker Eddy. She wrote, "The term CHRISTIAN SCIENCE was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing. The revelation consists of two parts: 1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and through the teachings of the Comforter, as promised by the Master. 2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the so-called miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to dispensation now ended, but that they illustrated an ever-operative divine Principle" (

Mary Baker Eddy ( www.marybakereddy.org ), born in rural New England in the 1800's, overcame many hurdles to become an acclaimed author, publisher, and religious leader whose impact is still being felt today. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame for "making an indelible mark on society, religion, and journalism." How did this independent New England woman rise from obscurity to become, as Human Life magazine described in 1907, "the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not the world, today"? Eddy (1821-1910) was born and raised on a farm near Concord, New Hampshire, in the United States. Because of many bouts of illness, she received most of her education at home, sometimes with the help her brother, Albert, a student at Dartmouth College. This turned out to be an advantage, given the many restrictions on women's education in 19th century America.

She experienced some difficult years as a young woman. She was widowed (and pregnant) six months into her first marriage. Some six years later, her family, thinking her rambunctious son was too taxing for her, removed him from her and sent him to live with foster parents. Hoping to regain a stable home life for herself and her son, she married again, but eventually divorced her unfaithful second husband. In poor health during much of this time, she experimented with allopathic medicine and alternative therapies particularly with homeopathy. She was seeking an understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and spirit. Simultaneously, she continued a life- long study of the Bible searching to uncover its promise of spiritual healing.

Doctrines Christian Science is based on a very different perception of God and reality than that of traditional Christianity. Rather than believing God to be the Creator of the material world, Christian Scientists regard God as all pervading Spirit or Mind who alone is real. Matter, evil, disease, pain, and death are illusions created by the limitations of the human mind.
Such a perception of being involves a radical reinterpretation of Jesus' life and ministry. Jesus is not seen as the incarnate Son of God whose death on the cross atoned for humanity's sins. Instead, he is viewed as one whose perfect obedience to God enabled him to transcend the illusion of sin and suffering. Through following Christ's example of yielding to divine Mind the individual can be released from death and suffering. History Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910). After years of suffering ill health through a spinal illness she sought the help of a man named Phineas P. Quimby whose helaing techniques involved the use of mesmerism and basic psychology. She was so impressed by her apparent recovery that she came to believe that Quimby had rediscovered the healing method of Jesus.
The turning point in her life came in February in 1866, a month after Quimby's death, when she slipped on an icy pavement and badly hurt her back. A few days after the accident, while reading the story of the healing of the paralytic in Matthew's Gospel, she instantly recovered her health.
