She developed a religion that holds that a person's spirit and religious faith can heal the body, not medical science, which is to be avoided. Her First Church of Christ, Scientist, originated in Boston where she also founded the daily newspaper the Christian Science Monitor

EDDY, Mary Baker [1821-1910] American founder of Christian Science Church
Relationship to me: Cousin
BAKER family ODT Contents: née BAKER, Mary A(nn) Morse The only American woman to found a lasting American-based religion, Mary Baker Eddy overcame years of ill health and great personal struggle to make an indelible mark on society, religion and journalism. From early childhood she was not strong physically, and in her search for health she sought relief through various healing systems including allopathy, homeopathy, hydropathy, electricity, and various others, but without success. She regarded her discovery of Christian Science as resulting directly and immediately from an accident which occurred in Lynn, MA, in 1866. While on her way to a meeting of the Good Templars, she fell on an icy street and was severely injured. She was carried to a nearby residence where she was attended by a physician and cared for during the night. The next day she was removed to her home in the adjacent town of Swampscott in a critical condition. On the third day following the injury, when she was apparently near death, she asked for her Bible, opened it to Mat. ix. 2, and reading the account of the healing of the palsied man by Jesus, was herself healed and able to rise from her sickbed.

She received most of her early education at home from her brother, and began a lifelong study of the Bible. She was widowed shortly after her marriage to George W. Glover in 1843. She married twice again: in 1853 to an itinerant dentist, whom she divorced 20 years later, and in 1877 to Asa Eddy, a follower of her new religion. Before founding Christian Science, Eddy was convinced that the Bible's New Testament accounts of healing held promise; she also explored popular curative systems. Due to her poor health, in 1862 she consulted Phineas Quimby , a mental healer who restored her health temporarily. Eddy eventually rejected Quimby's healing method, however, because she came to believe that healing came through the power of God, not the human mind. She attributed this belief, and the discovery of

The house at 400 Beacon St. is associated with Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Scientists. The story is told that when 86-year old author and reformer Mary Baker Eddy first saw her new home at 400 Beacon Street in January of 1908, she wept. This large stone mansion on the edge of Boston was a departure from Eddy's humble New Hampshire roots, and it dwarfed the house in Lynn, MA where she completed her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. But by 1908, circulation of Eddy's book had reached nearly a half-million copies, and she had become pastor of her own church, president of a teaching college, and founder of a publishing house. One reporter of the the time wrote that Eddy "is without doubt one of the most remarkable women in America" Today, visitors to this well-preserved residence will sense the vitality of thought that characterized the last three years of Eddy's life. It was here, at age 87, that Eddy conceived and set in motion the publication of an international newspaper, the now famous Christian Science Monitor.

    July 16 ~  Human Ideal
"To live and l e t live without clamor for distinction or recognition; to wait on divine love ; to write truth f i r s t on the tablet of one's own heart this is the s a n i t y and perfection of living , and my h u m a n ideal. ~ Mary Baker Eddy Christian Science founder Mary Morse Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was born on this day and raised on a farm near Concord, New Hampshire. Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love . It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it," she once said. Eddy, suffering from personal loss and spinal illness, turned to the New Testament in 1866 for solace. She was healed . Her epiphany and subsequent book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1875) became the foundation of her spirituality "Christian Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical," she explained. From Eddy's remarkable heart, in 1879, The First Church of Christian Scientist was established in Boston. Two years later, Eddy founded the Massachusetts Metaphysical College to further teach her methods of spiritual healing.

Name: Mary Baker Eddy Birth Date: July 16, 1821 Death Date: December 3, 1910 Place of Birth: Bow, New Hampshire, United States Place of Death: Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, United States Nationality: American Gender: Female Occupations: religious leader Mary Baker Eddy Main Biography The American founder of the Christian Science Church, Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) showed a unique understanding of the relationship between religion and health, which resulted in one of the era's most influential religious books, "Science and Health." Mary Baker was born July 16, 1821, at Bow, N.H. A delicate and nervous temperament led to long periods of sickness in her early years, and chronic ill health made her weak and infirm during much of her adult life. In 1843 she married George Washington Glover, but he soon died and she returned home, where she had her only child. She married Daniel Patterson, a traveling dentist, in 1853; however, his frequent trips and her invalidism led to a separation by 1866 and a divorce several years later. In 1877 she married Asa Gilbert Eddy.

    A presentation by Rolf A. F. Witzsche,
researcher with a 55 years background
in Christian Science. Mary Baker Eddy is honored across the world only for a few aspects of her achievements, most of which pertain to her titles. This is hardly sufficient to do justice to her, or to be just to ourselves. To celebrate her life involves a celebration of God in the tallest sense possible, on the basis of her leading edge discoveries. Mary Baker Eddy dedicated her life to the moral, spiritual, and scientific development of humanity and its mental healing. In the course if this pursuit she left us with a wealth of largely unknown achievements that may some day be counted among the tallest gifts ever presented to mankind. Still, with these achievements to her credit she does not place herself above humanity and out of reach, but presents herself as an exemplar of the potential for achievement that is native to every human being on this planet.
