Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910)

She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , first published in 1875. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, which today has branch churches and societies around the world. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor , a leading international newspaper, the recipient, to date, of seven Pulitzer Prizes.

  • Born: 16 July 1821 Birthplace: Bow, New Hampshire Died: 3 December 1910 Best Known As: Founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist
After a sudden recovery from a serious injury in 1866, Mary Baker Eddy began to formulate the ideas that would lead her to form the Church of Christ, Scientist. Beginning in the 1870s she wrote extensively, publishing Science and Health in 1875. In 1889 she chartered the Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts. The beliefs of the Christian Scientists (as they came to be called) include healing by faith, an affirmation that suffering is not God-created, but rather a mode of human perception. Although condemned by many Christian sects, their publication, The Christian Science Monitor, is highly respected.

Mary Baker Eddy Founder of Christian Science Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of the Christian Science movement, is widely recognized outside her Church as one of the most remarkable religious figures of modern times. She was born in New England on a farm in Bow, New Hampshire. Her childhood and much of her adult life, before 1862, was spent in ill health. Although raised with Puritan values, daily Bible reading, and even the talk of God's healing power, she spent many years looking for healing in the many remedial methods available in her time. She became a patient of the New England healer Phineas Parkhurst Quimby , whose "medicine-free" healing techniques undoubtedly influenced her greatly. When she first visited Dr. Quimby in 1862 she was a virtual invalid, and with the good doctor's help her health quickly improved. The change was instantaneous. Her pain and weakness disappeared. A sense of comfort and well-being stepped into their place. Within a week she says that without help she climbed the one hundred eighty-two steps to the dome of the City Hall. And in this whole experience she furnished a clear illustration of the words Jesus spoke to the woman healed after twelve years' illness, "Thy faith hath made thee whole." While under his care, off and on for several years, she became deeply interested in his theory of disease and its cure. She heard many of his essays read, and wrote many herself which she submitted to him for inspection and correction. She began to give some public lectures on his healing system in Warren, Maine, advertising her subject as, "P. P. Quimby's spiritual science healing disease as opposed to deism or Rochester-Rapping Spiritualism." After Quimby's death in 1866, Mrs. Eddy continued to teach the new ideas and methods, as one of his followers until the period of her more public work.

Eddy, Mary Morse Baker
Mary Baker Eddy By courtesy of the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. (1821-1910), founder of Christian Science Mary Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire, on July 16, 1821, to Mark and Abigail Baker, Congregationalist descendants of old New England families. She had limited formal education because of illness, but she read and studied at home and began to write both prose and poetry at an early age. In 1843 she married George W. Glover, who died before the birth of their son, George. Because of her ill health, the boy was reared primarily by others and had little contact with his mother. Suffering almost constantly from a spinal malady, she was preoccupied with questions of health. She experimented with homeopathy and in 1853 married Daniel Patterson, a dentist who shared this interest. Before their marriage ended in divorce in 1873, Mrs. Patterson sought out and was healed by Phineas P. Quimby of Portland, Maine, who performed remarkable cures without medication. She thought he had rediscovered the healing method of Jesus, and she lectured and wrote of it in regional periodicals. Despite subsequent official statements of her church denying any influence of Quimby, some scholars have considered him an important source of her views. Soon after Quimby died her illness recurred, and in 1866 she suffered a severe fall and called her own case hopeless. She was healed that year, however, after reading in the New Testament, which she marked as the point of her discovery of Christian Science. Separated from her husband, she spent several lonely years in writing and evolving her system, discussing it with some and teaching it to Hiram S. Crafts, Richard Kennedy, and others who subsequently became successful healers. In 1875 she published

The author worked for the publisher of many of Eddy's works.
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910)author of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and founder of the six time Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper "The Christian Science Monitor"was born and raised near Concord, New Hampshire, in the United States. Because of restrictions on women's education in nineteenth century America, and because of many bouts of illness, she received much of her education at home, sometimes with the help her brother Albert, a student at Dartmouth College. She experienced some difficult years as a young woman. She was widowed (and pregnant) six months into her first marriage. Hoping to regain a stable home life for herself and her son, she married again, but her second marriage eventually ended in divorce. In poor health during much of this time, she experimented with allopathic medicine and alternative therapies, particularly with homeopathy. She was seeking an understanding of the relationship between mind and body. Simultaneously, she continued a life-long study of the Bible searching to uncover its promise of spiritual healing.

"Give up the belief that mind is, even temporarily, compressed within the skull, and you will quickly become more manly or womanly. You will understand yourself and your Maker better than before." I would no more quarrel with a man because of his religion than I would because of his art. Truth is immortal; error is mortal. , founder of the Christian Science church. Born near Concord, New Hampshire, Eddy was a frail, emotional woman whose first husband died six months after their marriage. She returned home and gave birth to a son, but plagued by a spinal problem, she abandoned the child (although she helped him financially as an adult). Despite her illness, Eddy in 1853 was married again, this time to a philandering, itinerant dentist whom she divorced in 1873. Eddy recovered her health in 1862, when she was treated by Phineas Parkhurst Quimby of Portland, Maine. Quimby did not deny that illness existed but claimed that its cause was often in the mind of the sufferer. Although primarily interested in results, he wrote out his theories (calling one manuscript "Christ or Science"), which Eddy studied and copied. Devastated when Quimby died in 1866, Eddy gradually realized she could proclaim his healing message. Estranged from her family and without financial resources, Eddy published Science and Health (1875), the handbook of the Christian Science movement. Asserting that mind could triumph over illness, the book made a religion of Quimby's theories, which Eddy now claimed as her own. In the 381 revisions that followed, Eddy gradually altered Quimby's teachings and linked them to portions of the Bible. She denied the reality of illness and death, claiming they were not of the "Father Mother God" who created everything. When they appeared ill, Christian Scientists were to seek help from their own practitioners, not medical doctors. (Perhaps because Eddy had bad teeth and wore glasses, she banned neither dentists nor optometrists.) A believer in demonology, Eddy blamed problems, even deaths, including that of her third husband Asa Gilbert Eddy, on the "Malicious Animal Magnetism" of former disciples.
