He began his career in the Imperial Free City of Nuernberg workind with his father, a Hungarian goldsmith who had emigrated to Germany in 1455. In 1486 he was apprenticed to the painter and printmaker Michael Wolgumut and began to work with woodcuts and copper engravings as well. Later on he travelled to the Low Countries and to Italy, where he was impressed by the work of Giovanni Bellini and Andrea Mantegna. He is considered to be one of the great northern masters of drawing and painting. We always try to locate images of the specific works discussed in the journal. As you might expect, this is often impossible. Failing that, we seek out similar or typical work by the artist. The images in our files are linked below. Durer's Polyhedra Albrecht Durer, the remarkable German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung, available in English translation as Painter's Manual . It was one of the first books to teach the methods of perspective, and was highly regarded throughout the sixteenth century. Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists. Who he learned from is not known, but Luca Pacioli is a likely possibility. Some of the techniques and illustrations follow very closely the work of Piero della Francesca Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist 's attention. More importantly, this book presents the earliest known examples of polyhedral nets , i.e., polyheda unfolded to lie flat for printing. The image at right is Durer's drawing of the net of an icosahedron . While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.

He was the third child of a family with eighteen children. Worked in his father's workshop as a goldsmith and afterwards became a pupil of the painter Michael Welgemut (for three years). From 1490 he travelled to Colmar, Basel and Strasbourg. After his return to Nürnberg he married there in 1494. At the end of 1494 he went to Venice for half a year, to visit his friend Willibald Pirckheimer who studied at Padua at the time. From 1505 to 1507 he payed another visit to Venice where he met Bellini, whom he admired much. Back in Germany Dürer studied mathematics, geometry and Latin, read humanist literature and went to see scholars instead of artists. In 1512 he became Court Painter to Emperor Maximilian I and in 1520 he witnessed the coronation of Charles V at Aix-la-Chapelle. Dürer visited many places in Belgium and was honoured and celebrated himself. He returned home in bad health (probably because he had been looking for dead whales in Zeeland, Holland), but he continued to work until his death in 1528. Allthough he had a large workshop in Nürnberg nobody followed into his footsteps. Apart from his paintings he was also much admired for his drawings, engravings and woodcuts. Dürer also wrote treatises on various subjects.
