Lord Dunsany
B ritish peer, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was the 18th Baron Dunsany, whose family seat is in County Meath, northwest of Dublin. He fought in the Boer War and was wounded in WWI. An excellent chess player, Lord Dunsany was the Irish champion and held the great Capablanca to a draw in a simultaneous exhibition in London; his "Three Sailors' Gambit" is considered one of the best chess stories written. D unsany was one of the harbingers of modern fantasy, along with William Morris and George MacDonald. A successful playwright, he once had five concurrent plays running on Broadway ( Five Plays ). He wrote over seventy books, many with a quill pen, others dictated to his wife, beginning in 1905 with The Gods of Pegana , and including the very readable memoirs Patches of Sunlight and While the Sirens Slept . In the words of the ardent admirer H.P. Lovecraft: "To the truly imaginative he is a talisman and a key unlocking rich storehouses of dream." Such magical tales as "Idle Days on the Yann" and "A Shop in Go-by Street" conjure idyllic realms of fantasy far away from the worries of the common world though they may well have troubles of their own.

Biographical Sketch
John Sleigh Pudney, British poet, novelist, editor, and journalist was born on January 19, 1909, in Langley, Buckinghamshire, England. The only son of Henry William Pudney and Mabel Sleigh Pudney, he was reared in the country, but was sent away for his education to Gresham's Hall, Holt. At Gresham's Hall Pudney became friends with W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten. Pudney left school at sixteen, however, to work for an estate agency and to pursue his interest in writing. His first volume of poetry, SPRING ENCOUNTER (1933), ushered Pudney into the literary circle of Lady Ottoline Morrell. In 1934 he married Crystal Herbert, with whom he had two daughters and a son. At this time Pudney also began his professional writing career in earnest as writer-producer for the BBC (1934-1937), and as a journalist for the NEWS CHRONICLE. In 1938 Pudney published the first of many novels, JACOBSON'S LADDER. He then focused on the subject of recovery (from divorce and alcoholism), producing several articles and the autobiographical THANK GOODNESS FOR CAKE (1978). He also continued to write poems, two of which appeared in the TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT after his death on November 10, 1977.

Lord Dunsany: Pioneer of Modern Fantasy
By Henry Wessells
Originally published in AB Bookman's Weekly October 19, 1998
The early stories and novels of Lord Dunsany laid the foundations of modern fantasy literature, and yet, despite the profound influence of his exotic and highly polished writings upon the genre, he remains, paradoxically, a neglected and under-appreciated writer. The tales in Time and the Gods and The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories evoke richly-imagined, dreamlike landscapes far removed from Edwardian England.
These books also contain the seeds of heroic fantasy (later called "sword and sorcery" by Fritz Leiber) which Dunsany (1878-1957) further elaborated in his novels. Chief among these is The King of Elfland' s Daughter , which vividly explores tensions between the real world and the fantasy realm. Even more so than the early fantasies of William Morris and E.R. Eddison, Dunsany's works have influenced many of the major fantasy authors of the 20th century from A. Merritt to H. P. Lovecraft to J. R. R. Tolkien and dozens of others. Dunsany's collections and novels also serve to chart the career of artist and illustrator Sydney H. Sime, who was the only artist to illustrate Dunsany's work before the Second World War.
In quite different fashion, the five volumes of Jorkens stories - tall tales published between 1930 and 1954 - influenced fantasy authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, Fletcher Pratt, L. Sprague de Camp, and Sterling Lanier. Some of his later works, however, such as the comic fantasy novels

Lord Dunsany

http://pages.marsu.ru/maleeva/texts/9.txt
’… PEARLY BEACH by Lord Dttnsany DUNSANY, EDWARD JOHN MORETON DRAX PLUNKETT, 18'th Baron (1878 - 1957), Irish poet, dramatist and novelist, born in London, and educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Col lege, Sandhurst. ¥ served in the Boer War and World War I. Lord Dunsany wrote in many different media but was successful as   play- wright. Nearly all of his works are characterized by mysticism, fan- tasy, and rich, imaginative language. His stories frequently draw ¨à®n Celtic and oriental mythology. Among his best-known plays are "The Gllittering Gate o (1909), "The Gods of the Mountain- (1911), and "If" (1921). His other works include novels, collections of short stories, and autobiographies. We could not remember, any of us at the Club, who it was that first invented the twopenny stamp on checks'. There were eight or nine of us there, and not one of us could put   n me to him. Of course   lot of us knew, but we' d all forgotten it. And that started us talking of the tricks memory plays. Some said memory didn' t matter so much; some said it was looking forward that mattered most in business, or even watching closely what was going on around you now. And at that Jorkens stepped in. No, memory was the thing, he said; he could have made more by   good steady memory than by any amount of looking into the future. "I don' t see how that could be," said   stockbroker, who had just bought Jaffirs at 62', on pretty good information that they would go to 75. As   matter of fact they fell to 59. But Jorkens stuck to his point. "With   good allround memory," he said, "I could have made millions." "But how?" asked the stockbroker. "Well, it was this way," said Jorkens. "I had   rather nice pearl in   tiepin. And things weren' t quite going the way I liked.' financially,I mean. Well, to cut   long story short, I decided to hock my pearl. I remember waiting till it was dark one winter's evening, so as to get to the pawnshop decently unobserved. And I went in and unscrewed the pearl off its pin, and saw it n® more. That put the financial position on   sound basis again; but I á â¥ out   little what you call ruefully, my face must have shown it, and I was sticking back what was left on my goldofpin into my tie. Funny how anyone could have noticed all that, but observed that when people are   little bit drunk they sometimes do. Anyway there was   tall man leaning against   wall,   man I had never seen before in my life, and he looked at me in   lazy sort of way, not troubling to move his head, only his eyes, and even then he seemed barely troubling to turn and keep open; and he said, 'You want to go to Carrapaccas beach. That' s where you want to go.' And he gave me the latitude and longitude. 'Pearls to be had for the gathering there', he said. And I asked him what he meant, why he spoke to me . I asked him all kinds of things. But all he would say was, 'You go Carrappas beach, ' not even giving it the same name the second time. Well I jotted the latitude and longitude down on my shirt cuff, and I thought the thing over   lot. And the first thing I 1 thought things over was that the man was perfectly genuine; he had probably had this secret for years, and then one day he had had   drop too much and had blurted the thing out. You m ã say what you like against drink, but you don' t find   man to tell you   thing like that, just because he's sorry for you for losing  : pearl, when he' s sober. And mind you the Carrappas beaches, or whatever he called them, were there. The longitude was   long way east, and the latitude   lot south, and I started one day from London, heading for Aden'. Did I tell you all this was in London? No place like it for starting on journeys. Well I started from London and came again to Aden. I had curious romance there once. Answer the following questions: 1. What started the discussion at the club? 2. What opinions were given? 3. What was Jorkens' opinion? 4. Why did Jorkens have to go to   pawnshop? 5. What sort of man began talking to Jorkens after the latter came out of the pawnshop?
