Creative Perfumes Why is it that when people have no capacity for private usefulness they should be so anxious to serve the public?
One loses many laughs by not laughing at oneself. "If you have anything to tell me of importance, for God's sake begin at the end." "A human being isn't an orchid, he must draw something from the soil he grows in." Clothes and courage have much to do with each other.

Text from the Sara Jeannette Duncan Plaque
An internationally renowned author, Duncan was raised in the adjacent house and educated locally. She taught school briefly, but then determinedly turned to journalism, gaining notice for her distinctive and witty writing style. In 1890 Duncan published her first book, A Social Departure, based in dispatches produced during a trip around the world. Following her marriage the next year, she took up residence in India where she continued to pursue a literary career. A prolific writer, Duncan published over twenty books, only one of which, Imperialist (1904), had a Canadian setting. In this penetrating study of life in Elgin (Brantford) in the late 19th century. Duncan integrated shrewd political commentary with minute social observation, thereby gaining for herself a distinctive place in Canadian literature. The Imperialist Chapter I It would have been idle to inquire into the antecedents,
or even the circumstances, of old Mother Beggarlegs. She
would never tell; the children, at all events, were
convinced of that; and it was only the children, perhaps,
who had the time and the inclination to speculate. Her
occupation was clear; she presided like a venerable
stooping hawk, over a stall in the covered part of the
Elgin market-place, where she sold gingerbread horses
and large round gingerbread cookies, and brown sticky squares of what was known in all circles in Elgin as taffy. She came, it was understood, with the dawn; with the night she vanished, spending the interval on a not improbable broomstick. Her gingerbread was better than First Page Next Page Last Page Read ... Domin(at)ion Smells Like Teen Spirit:
Issues of Power and Authority in the Fiction of
Sara Jeannette Duncan and Stephen Leacock

This course examines tropes of domin(at)ion and issues of power and authority in the fiction of Sara Jeannette Duncan (1861-1922) and Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) in the period 1899-1914, between the Boer War (1899-1902) and the First World War, and The Path of a Star (1899) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914). Duncan's fiction, set in Victorian India, satirizes the social and political institutions of British imperialism and explores issues of women's power and authority within the dominion of Empire. Leacock's fiction, set in Edwardian-Georgian Canada, satirizes parochial social and political manners and explores issues of men's power and authority inside the Canadian Dominion. Lectures will focus on pertinent issues of domin(at)ion, power, authority, gender, ethnicity and teen spirit leading up to the Teens (1910s) in Canadian literature.
PREREQUISITES: Credit or standing in two 100-division English courses and two 200-division English courses, one of which must be Engl. 204 or 205. Recommended: ENGL 206.
