The New York Times Book Review
Alexander's significant, welcome book gives us so much to think about in [this] moving story of two people... About the Author Eleanor Alexander is Assistant Professor of History at Georgia Institute of Technology. Book Description "Tells a fascinating tale of two compelling figures whose lives were intriguing, at times harrowing, and in many ways tragic. At the same time, Alexander investigates a broader topic-the history of African American intimacy-yet to be explored in depth . . .A riveting narrative." -Martha Hodes Sexism, racism, self-hatred, and romantic love: all figure in prominently in this scholarly-but nicely hard-boiled-discussion of the bond between the famous Paul Laurence Dunbar and his wife Alice. Eleanor Alexander's analysis of turn-of-the-twentieth-century black marriage is required reading for every student of American, especially African-American, heterosexual relationships. - Nell Painter, Edwards Professor of American History, Princeton University Author of

We cannot use complete genealogies here. In the interest of saving space, w e will just assume that "any information would be greatly appreciated!" Along these lines, I have also abbreviated and edited the queries for space. All dates are now in the format dd MMM yyyy. Also, I use the abbreviations "b." for born, "m." for married, "d." for died, and "bur." for buried. I cannot post pedigreesplease have a specific question that you are trying to have answered. If there is not a specific question, perhaps the Surname page will serve you well. Finally, please consider your personal security when submitting queries. I hesitate to list your personal physical addresses. I would rather that you correspond via email and decide for yourself whether someone answering your query is "OK" or not. UNFORTUNATELY, I GET SO MUCH JUNK EMAIL THAT "Minnehaha County" MUST BE IN YOUR SUBJECT LINE OR IT WILL BE VERY EASY TO INNOCENTLY, ACCIDENTALLY IGNORE IT, WHICH I DO NOT WANT TO DO!

Alice Dunbar-Nelson
by Sheila Smith McKoy Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 19 July 1875, Alice Ruth Moore was the daughter of Patricia Wright, a seamstress, and Joseph Moore, a merchant marine, and, due to her middle-class social status and racially mixed appearance, she enjoyed the diverse culture of the city. She graduated Straight University (now Dillard University) in 1892 and began her career as a teacher in the public school system of New Orleans. In 1895, Dunbar-Nelson published her first collection of short stories and poems, Violets and Other Tales. Although many of the pieces were obviously marked by her inexperience, "Titee," "A Carnival Jangle," and "Little Miss Sophie" reveal her gift for capturing the language, setting, and pathos peculiar to New Orleans life at the turn of the century. She married Paul Laurence Dunbar after a courtship of letters that began when Dunbar saw her
picture accompanying one of her poems published in the Monthly Review in 1897. They married in 1898 in a secret ceremony in New York, where she was teaching at the White Rose Mission (later, the White Rose Home for Girls in Harlem), which she helped to found. After her marriage, Dunbar-Nelson moved to Washington, D.C., with her husband. Dunbar-Nelson continued to write and, in 1899, published The Goodness of St. Rocque and Other Stories, which included a revision of "Titee" (one with a happier ending), "Little Miss Sophie," and "A Carnival Jangle." Aside from the ending of "Titee," the revisions of these stories heralded the problems that she faced with later manuscripts. Publishers, eager for dialect stories such as those that made Paul Laurence Dunbar

Thanks to Frank Dennis for transcribing the information on this page into a digital format. You are our visitor since November 16, 1997 In the mid 1960's a group of local historians and members of the Owasco, NY Chapter of the DAR compiled a 10 volume listing of Cayuga County , NY cemetery records. These books generally cite the name and date (or year) of death as referenced in actual cemetery records or as transcribed from cemetery headstones. Copies of these 1960s cemetery index volumes are available for research in the Local History Room of Seymour Public Library, The Cayuga County Historian's Office and Luther Research Center at the Cayuga-Owasco Lakes Historical Society. The listings on this website page came from that 1960s burial inventory. Thus, these listings may not display burials after about 1962.
