Dumas, the most widely read of all French writers, is best remembered for his historical novels The Three Musketeers (1844; trans. 1846) and The Count of Monte-Cristo (1844; trans. 1846). Dumas was born in Villers-Cotterªts, Aisne, July 24, 1802. He was the son of a general and the grandson of a nobleman who had settled in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and married a black woman there. He had little formal education but read voraciously and was especially attracted to 16th- and 17th-century adventure stories. While working as a clerk, he attended performances of an English Shakespearean company and was inspired to write drama. The Com©die Fran§aise produced his play Henri III et sa cour (Henry III and His Court) in 1829 and the romantic drama Christine in 1830; both were resounding successes.

Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, dit Alexandre Dumas, est né à Villers-Cotterêts en 1802. Fils du général Alexandre Davy Dumas (1762-1806), il devient, à l'âge de 14 ans, clerc de notaire, puis vient chercher fortune à Paris, à partir de 1822. Il est d'abord expéditionnaire dans le bureau de la chancellerie du Duc d'Orléans. Mais son rêve reste de connaître le succès littéraire. Il s'essaie tout d'abord à publier quelques récits dans la presse. A partir de 1825, il s'attaque au vaudeville. Il acquiert très rapidement la notoriété littéraire, en écrivant Henri III et sa cour (1829), drame qui annonce la révolution théâtrale romantique. Il ecrit ainsi de nombreuses pièces, dont Antony (1831), La Tour de Nesle (1832), Kean ou Désordre et Génie (1836). Puis Dumas se tourne vers le roman, domaine dans lequel il fit preuve d'une grande fécondité (de nombreux collaborateurs, dont Auguste Marquet l'aidèrent). Dès 1844, avec Le Comte de Monte-Cristo , Alexandre Dumas connut un grand succès populaire qui n'allait plus se démentir. Publiés sous la forme de romans-feuilletons, et disposés en trilogie, parurent Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844), suivi de Vingt Ans après (1845) et du Vicomte de Bragelonne (1848-1850), récits évoquant l'époque de Louis XIII, tandis que La reine Margot (1845), La Dame de Monsereau (1845) et Les Quarante-Cinq (1845) se déroulent durant les guerres de religion. Alexandre Dumas n'est ni un érudit ni un compilateur ; c'est plutôt un scénariste, habile à camper des personnages entraînés dans des intrigues mouvementées par leur goût de l'action, à l'image de leur créateur, qui suivit Garibaldi dans l'expédition sicilienne des Mile. Sa fécondité et son style alerte se retrouvent d'ailleurs dans les Mémoires (1852-1855) ou les Impressions de voyages. Alexandre Dumas meurt à Puys en 1870.

Cette manifestation se déroulera le 3 octobre, avait dit au printemps l'Association des amis de Dumas, animée par l'écrivain Didier Decoin. Mais, interrogé cette semaine, le ministère de la Culture n'a pu confirmer cette date et il n'est pas exclu qu'elle ait finalement lieu en novembre. "Avec ce geste, la République donnera toute sa place à l'un de ses enfants les plus turbulents et les plus talentueux (...) dont toute la vie fut au service de notre idéal républicain", avait dit Jacques Chirac, alors président-candidat. Entre les élections du printemps et les vacances d'été, il n'était pas aisé de caler une date pour un tel hommage. En tout cas, la voie est aujourd'hui dégagée pour cette cérémonie après que les habitants de Villers-Cotterêts, où reposent les restes du grand homme, avaient retiré leurs recours en conseil d'Etat contre le décret présidentiel autorisant l'opération. Ils craignaient notamment de perdre un argument touristique de poids.

És bár írói nemzedékek tûnnek fel és tûnnek el, „A három testõr" és a „Monte Christo grófja" változatlanul minden világrészen az olvasási sikerlista élén áll. A nevéhez és életmûvéhez tapadt lebecsülõ jelzõk még igazak is lehetnek, ám ezek a vétkek õnála inkább erényeknek tekintendõk. Azt mondják, hogy felületes. Gyakran igaz is, de úgy felületes, hogy a rohanó cselekmény, a váratlan, izgalmas helyzetek áradata, a számos feledhetetlen figura folytán ez a felületesség nemcsak alig észrevehetõ, de nem is fontos. És hogy lélektana nem felel meg a pszichológia tudományos eredményeinek? Igaz, de hát a legszebb mesék lélektana is mese. Hogy történelemábrázolása nem pontosan olyan, mint ahogyan a kutató tudomány kiderítette'' Ez is igaz, de sokkal inkább fordítja a figyelmet a történelem gazdagságára, mint a legalaposabb, részletezõ tanulmány. Az igazi nagy romantikusok - Walter Scott Jókai Mór , az idõsebb Dumas - még az irodalmat is hatásosabban fordították a látványos múltidézés felé, mint a kétségtelenül hitelesebb iskolai tananyag. A híres Richelieu bíboros korát, az angol polgári forradalmat, a nagy francia forradalmat, Garibaldi szabadságharcát több olvasó ismeri szemléletesen, mint ahányan az iskolákban jelesre megtanulták. Dumas élete pedig csaknem olyan érdekes, olyan kalandos, mint vadromantikusnak mondott regényei.
