Biographical Information on Physician Writers
D-G John Chalmers Dacosta
An 1885 graduate of the Jefferson Medical College, DaCosta became a surgeon, rising to the rank of professor at his alma mater in 1900. In 1907 he was named the first Samuel D. Gross Professor of Surgery. In addition to his other medical writing and addresses, he is remembered for his textbook of surgery, which continued through ten editions. Background

Erasmus Darwin
The grandfather of Charles Darwin and Francis Galton received his M.B. degree from Cambridge in 1755, and M.D. from Edinburgh in 1756. A true polymath, he had a successful medical practice in Lichfield, England; so successful that he turned down George III's offer that he become the king's personal physician. He founded the influential Lunar Society in 1766, and introduced, often in verse, many ideas relevant to his grandson's theory of evolution. Background

Roster Of Physician Writers We are surprised if the doctor, by stealing some hours from his daily avocations, attains even moderate eminence in the path of literature. Edward Berdoe The following list includes the names, life-dates, and nationalities of all the physician writers of whom I am aware, drawn from a variety of resources . To be included, an individual must be a physician (Doctor of Medicine or of Osteopathy in the United States, or similarly certified or accepted in countries other than the United States, or in previous eras), and must have published (not just self-published) at least one book (not just a chap book) of a "creative" nature - fiction, poetry, drama, essay. Pseudonyms are italicized , preceded or followed by real names. Each name is linked to a section of brief and informal biographical (emphasizing medical training and work) and bibliographical (including reference to background sources as well as selected works) information, but no literary criticism. The total number of authors included is of course but a fraction of all physician writers, and, in addition to encouraging interest in this neglected aspect of the literature and medicine, or medical humanities, field, one reason for publishing this list is to invite suggestions for additions to it.

Biographical Sketch
Enit Zerner Kaufman (1908?-1961) was born near Vienna, where she later studied art. Her primary interest was portraiture, and she soon created a name for herself painting prominent Europeans, including Albert Sarraut and Georges Duhamel, among others. Her work was featured in several successful exhibitions in Paris, where her skillful paintings of women and children also attracted attention. Her life and career were changed dramatically by the onset of World War II, and she fled the turbulence of Europe for an uncertain future in New York City in 1939, along with her husband Edward, a lawyer. Kaufman worked with great determination in the United States to resume her interrupted career and achieved some success, teaching art and working to rebuild her reputation as a portraitist. As had been the case in Europe, many of her subjects were prominent figures in government, education, and the arts. She had the distinction of painting four American Presidents, including Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Her work was featured in a number of exhibitions in the 1940s and 1950s, including an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and another at the New York Historical Society.

The quotes on this page fall into three main categories:
  • quotes that I think are funny, interesting, profound, ridiculous, etc.
  • quotes that are famous, but whose source is not well known
  • quotes that are often misquoted The fact that I put a quote on this page doesn't necessarily mean I agree with the sentiment expressed therein! (People have asked...) I've tried to link to relevant web-sites whenever possible (as time permits). Actors, actresses, film writers and films are linked to entries in the Internet Movie Database . Musicians, albums and songs are linked to entries in the All Music Guide . Literary writers and their works are linked to entries at Amazon.com . Other people (statesmen, etc.) are linked to searches for their names at Google Note: The IMDb and AMG have recently changed the format of their URLs. I hope the links below actually work for you; if not, let me know.

Academic Freedom: Freedom of students or teachers to hold or express views without fear of arbitrary interference, except when such ideas are deemed racist, bigoted, homophobic, insensitive, chauvinistic, jingoistic, imperialistic, religious, conservative, or politically incorrect. Rush Limbaugh Academic freedom is not only meant to protect professors; it is also supposed to ensure students' right to learn without being molested. When instructors use their classrooms to indoctrinate and propagandize, they cheat those students and betray the academic mission they are entrusted with. That should be intolerable to honest men and women of every stripe liberals and conservatives alike. Jeff Jacoby
