Duhamel, Georges (1884-1966), écrivain français. Licencié ès sciences en 1908, docteur en médecine en 1909, Georges Duhamel poursuivit parallèlement travaux littéraires et recherches scientifiques. En 1914, il devint chirurgien volontaire aux armées, expérience pénible qui lui inspira le récit Civilisation (1918). Pour cet ouvrage, publié sous le pseudonyme de Denis Thévenin, Georges Duhamel reçut le prix Goncourt en 1918. C'est à partir de 1920 qu'il renonça à ses travaux scientifiques pour se consacrer uniquement aux lettres. Élu à l'académie française en 1935, il effectua dès lors une carrière de "notable intellectuel": il dirigea le Mercure de France de 1935 à 1939, devint membre de l'académie de médecine en 1937, membre de l'académie de chirurgie en 1940 et membre de l'académie des sciences morales et politiques en 1942. Ses œuvres majeures furent deux cycles romanesques où il s'efforçait de fixer l'image d'une époque en dépeignant différents milieux sociaux et des personnages très contrastés. Le premier de ces cycles, Vie et aventures de Salavin (1920-1932), conte en cinq volumes le parcours d'un homme déterminé à atteindre la sainteté. Le second cycle

HUGH DOWNMAN Ordained a priest at Oxford in 1763, Downman went on to study medicine at Edinburgh where he boarded with the blind poet Thomas Blacklock. In 1770 he received a master's degree in medicine from Cambridge, and began intermittently practicing medicine in Exeter until ill-health forced his retirement.

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Doyle graduated M.B., C.M. in 1881 from the University of Edinburgh, where he studied under Dr. Joseph Bell, said to be the model for Sherlock Holmes. He served as ship's doctor aboard a Greenland whaler during medical school, and on a voyage to West Africa afterwards. During the 80's he practiced general medicine, and in 1890 studied eye diseases in Vienna; but by 1891 he had decided to give up medicine and devote himself fulltime to writing. His only other medical involvement was to be supervision of a hospital in South Africa during the Boer War; for which efforts he was knighted in 1902. He spent his later years studying and writing about spiritualism. Only a few of his many books are listed below.
