The English Short Title Catalogue Now Available Through Eureka
RLIN , the Research Libraries Information Network. The move opens up the file to all kinds of users via a variety of different access options including Eureka , RLG's easy-to-use search service, with its superior record display and online help features. ESTC is an invaluable tool for myriad fields of study, well beyond the implications of "English" in its title. It provides online descriptions of items printed in any language in the British Isles, any British dependency, and the United States prior to 1801, as well as items printed wholly or partly in any British language elsewhere in the world during this period. (Originally, ESTC stood for the "Eighteenth-century Short Title Catalogue"; the file was expanded to cover earlier materials in 1994, renamed, and today contains some 85,000 bibliographic records for works published before 1701, the earliest dating to 1473.) The file is continually updated and enhanced. In addition to scholars in traditional fields, students of the history of ideologies, of popular movements and social trends, and of the book itself, can be expected to make ESTC a major resource. Thus far used by a relatively small, if devoted, user clientele, ESTC will now be available to a much broader public. Researchers will be able to find pertinent entries across all of the RLIN bibliographic files with a single search. And, if their institution has a Z39.50 client, they will be able to access ESTC through RLG's

THOU youngest virgin-daughter of the skies,
Made in the last promotion of the blest;
In spreading branches more sublimely rise,
Rich with immortal green above the rest:
Whether, adopted to some neighbouring star,
Or, in procession fixt and regular,
Whatever happy region is thy place,
Cease thy celestial song a little space;
Thou wilt have time enough for hymns divine, Hear, then, a mortal Muse thy praise rehearse, In no ignoble verse; But such as thy own voice did practise here, When thy first-fruits of Poesy were given, To make thyself a welcome inmate there; While yet a young probationer, And candidate of Heaven. If by traduction came thy mind, Our wonder is the less, to find A soul so charming from a stock so good; So wert thou born into the tuneful strain

    John Dryden was the most influential man of literature in the second half of 17th-century England.
    His works were very diverse; he wrote 30 plays, including operas and a masque, poetry as well as translations from Latin, including a translation of The Works of Virgil
    His works were always very topical - he became Poet Laureate but, refusing to denounce his Catholic faith when the Protestant King William III ascended to the throne, later lost this position.

    Biography of John Dryden
    John Dryden (1631 - 1700)
    John Dryden (August 19, 1631 - May 12, 1700) was an influential British poet, literary critic, and playwright. He was born in a village rectory near Oundle in Northamptonshire and educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a professional writer throughout his life. His early plays, often heroic tragedy, met with highly variable success but served to promote his name and his Royalist sentiments. Arriving in London during the Protectorate, he attempted to capitalise on the Parliamentarian sympathies of his family, but failed to make much impact until the Restoration of King Charles II. His poem, Astrea Redux , in honour of this event, made him a name. Dryden turned to the stage for a living, and soon became the most successful dramatist of the decade following the Restoration. He wrote in both of the dominant genres of the period: heroic verse drama and comedy of manners. He wrote for money, and claimed that the only one of his plays he cared for was All For Love The Indian Emperor is a wholly fictitious account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards.

    Alexander the Great conquered Persia in 331 B.C. By Philip's warlike son:
    Aloft in awful state
    The godlike hero sate
    On his imperial throne.
    His valiant peers were placed around;
    Their brows with roses and with myrtles bound:
    (So should desert in arms be crowned.)
    The lovely Thais, by his side,
    Sate like a blooming Eastern bride, In flower of youth and beauty's pride. Happy, happy, happy pair! None but the brave, None but the brave, None but the brave deserves the fair.
