John Dryden Poet, born in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and went to London in 1637, where he wrote several plays and satires for the court. His first successful play, written in heroic couplets, was The Indian Emperor (1665). After 1676, he began to write in blank verse, producing his best play, All for Love (1678). In 1668 he became Poet Laureate and in 1670 historiographer royal. Called to defend the king's party, he wrote a series of satires, notably Absalom and Achitophel (1681), which did much to turn the tide against the Whigs. To this era also belong the didactic poem Religio laici (1682), which argues the case for Anglicanism, and The Hind and the Panther (1687), marking his conversion to Catholicism. His political reward was a place in the customs; but he lost his laureateship on the accession of William III (1688). He also wrote a number of important critical works, many in his late years. The English poet, dramatist, and critic John Dryden called himself Neander, the "new man," in his essay Of Dramatic Poesy (1668), and implied that he was a spokesman for the concerns of his generation and the embodiment of its tastes. Dryden was born to a Puritan family in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, and was educated at Westminster School and at the University of Cambridge. About 1657 he went to London as clerk to the chamberlain to the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's first important poem, Heroic Stanzas (1659), was written in memory of Cromwell. After the Restoration, however, Dryden became a Royalist and celebrated the return of King Charles II in two poems, Astraea Redux (1660) and Panegyric on the Coronation (1661). In 1663 he married Lady Elizabeth Howard, sister of his patron, the courtier and playwright Sir Robert Howard.

THE GEOFFREY CHAUCER PAGE
John Dryden (1631-1700) John Dryden, the first of the great English neo-classical poets, warmly admired Chaucer, whom he regarded as the founder of English verse, an equal to the great poets of classical antiquity. At the end of his life Dryden produced The Fables , translations of works by Ovid and Chaucer. His Preface to The Fables is famous for its appreciative criticism of Chaucer "Here is God's Plenty" has become the ultimate characterization of Chaucer's art. It also provides some interesting insights on the state of English poetry at its time and Chaucer's stature in that canon. For excerpts see: The Preface to The Fables Dryden translated The Knight's Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale, and The Wife of Bath's Tale. To read these tales in heroic couplets and neo-classical style tells a good deal about Dryden and his times; if, as Frost said, "poetry is what gets left out in translation," the translations also provide a means of defining, and perhaps undertanding, the characteristics of Chaucer's own poetic style. See: The Wife of Bath, Her Tale

John Dryden was born at the vicarage of Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, on August 9, 1631, son of Erasmus Dryden and Mary Pickering. His family were Parliamentary supporters with Puritan leanings. He attended Westminster School as a king's scholar under Richard Busby, and was an avid student of the classics. While at Westminster, Dryden published his first verses, an elegy "Upon the Death of Lord Hastings", in Lachrymæ Musarum (1649). He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1650, and took a BA in 1654.
Dryden moved to London around 1657, and first gained notice with his 'Heroic Stanzas' (1659) on the death of Lord Protector Cromwell. In the Royalist climate of the Restoration, he sensibly wrote Astraea Redux (1660) to celebrate the return of Charles II. For the coronation, Dryden wrote "To His Sacred Majesty, A Panegyric.." (1661). In 1662, Dryden wrote verses "To My Lord Chancellor" Clarendon, and was elected to the Royal Society. The theatres had been reopened, demand for entertainments was high, and Dryden set to writing plays. In 1663, Dryden married Lady Elizabeth Howard, the sister of his theatrical partner Sir Robert Howard, and the eldest daughter of the Earl of Berkshire. His first play was the prose comedy of humours A Wild Gallant (1663), a wholly unremarkable piece, followed by the tragicomedy
