NY: The Library of America, 1987 Achievement Considered by many as the leader of Naturalism in American writing, Dreiser is also remembered for his stinging criticism of the genteel tradition and of what Howells described as the "smiling aspects of life" typifying America. In his fiction, Dreiser deals with social problems and with characters who struggle to survive. His sympathetic treatment of a "morally loose" woman in Sister Carrie was called immoral and he suffered at the hands of publishers. One of Dreiser's favorite fictional devices was the use of contrast between the rich and the poor, the urbane and the unsophisticated, and the power brokers and the helpless. While he wrote about "raw" experiences of life in his earlier works, in his later writing he considered the impact of economic society on the lives of people in the remarkable trilogy -

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) American author, outstanding representative of naturalism, whose novels depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreiser's novels were held to be amoral, and he battled throughout his career against censorship and popular taste. This started with SISTER CARRIE (1900). It was not until 1981 that the work was published in its original form. Dreiser's principal concern was with the conflict between human needs and the demands of society for material success. "A woman should some day write the complete philosophy of clothes. No matter how young, it is one of the things she wholly comprehends. There is an indescribably faint line in the matter of man's apparel which somehow divides for her those who are worth glancing at and those who are not. Once an individual has passed this faint line on the way downward he will get no glance from her. There is another line at which the dress of a man will cause her to study her own." (from Sister Carrie Theodore Dreiser was born in Sullivan, Indiana, the ninth of ten children. His parents were poor. In the 1860s his father, a devout Catholic German immigrant, had attempted to establish his own woolen mill, but after it was destroyed in a fire, the family lived in poverty. Dreiser's schooling was erratic, as the family moved from town to town. He left home when he was 16 and worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher, he was able to spend the year 1889-1890 at Indiana University. Dreiser left after only a year. He was, however, a voracious reader, and the impact of such writers as Hawthorne, Poe, Balzac, Herbert Spencer, and Freud influenced his thought and his reaction against organized religion.

American writer and editor whose naturalistic novels, such as Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925), portray life as a struggle against ungovernable forces. Encyclopedia Dreiser, Theodore drī sər, –zər ) , 1871–1945, American novelist, b. Terre Haute, Ind. A pioneer of naturalism in American literature, Dreiser wrote novels reflecting his mechanistic view of life, a concept that held humanity as the victim of such ungovernable forces as economics, biology, society, and even chance. In his works, conventional morality is unimportant, consciously virtuous behavior having little to do with material success and happiness. While his style and language tended to be clumsy and plodding, he played an important role in introducing a new realism and sexual candor into American fiction. Dreiser was born into a large and poor family. His education was irregular, but, with help from a sympathetic high school teacher, he spent the year 1889–90 at the Univ. of Indiana. After working as a journalist on several midwestern newspapers, in 1894 he went to New York City, where he began a career in publishing, eventually rising to the presidency of Butterick Publications. His first novel

Dreiser's style is unconventional. If students have heard of him, they've heard that he's a clumsy stylist. They also will have difficulty understanding Ida's dilemma in "Typhoon." The instructor should explain that Dreiser was trained as a journalist whose main duty was to record the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a story. Graceful style was a small concern. In fact, some of Dreiser's verbal clumsiness was more or less deliberate. His writing possesses its particular power, its ability to move the emotions, in part because of its bluntness, its lack of grace. Try to imagine "Typhoon" told by a facile stylist, for example, by F. Scott Fitzgerald . It would lose much of its voltage. It's a good idea to show students how thoroughly trapped and damned Ida Zobel is by an illicit pregnancy. Children of the 1990s will likely try to foist their own standards back onto her time and place. Students identify with this story because they feel much peer pressure in matters of sex. Ask them to try to argue sympathetically for Hauptfuhrer. Can it be done? Where did Dreiser's sympathies lie? Another good theme to discuss is Ida's being "forgiven" by the public, her almost automatic innocence before the court, and her adoption by the wealthy socialite. Dreiser is indicating some things here about the influence of the fourth estate over the administration of justice. We sympathize with Ida, of course, but her exoneration for the killing is suspect. Certainly she still feels great guilt; it is the major motivation for her suicide.

, author. Dreiser was the foremost American literary naturalist and author of two of the most significant works of early-twentieth-century American fiction, Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925). He was raised in a large and poor Catholic family (his father was German-born) in various Indiana towns. After arriving in Chicago in his teens, he worked at menial jobs ranging from stock clerk to laundry truck driver until he broke into newspaper reporting in 1892. After almost a decade of successful work as a reporter in St. Louis and Pittsburgh, as an editor of the New York magazine Ev'ry Month, and as a free-lance magazine writer in New York, Dreiser in late 1899 began his first novel, Sister Carrie. Set in Chicago and New York, the work is remarkable for its amoral yet sympathetic portrayal of the role of female sexuality in the rise of its heroine and for its rendering of the complex union of chance, character, and place in the fall of its male protagonist, Hurstwood. Although Sister Carrie was published, its publisher failed to promote the work because of its contents—an incident that Dreiser and such later supporters as H. L. Mencken made infamous as an example of the power of puritanical ideas in America.
