Ye that love the moon's soft light,
Hitherãhither wend your way;
Twine ye in a jocund ring,
Round the wild witch-hazel tree.
Hail the wanderer again,
And doubly bright his fairy fire.
Twine ye in an airy round,
Round the wild witch-hazel tree.
The beetle guards our holy ground,
He flies about the haunted place, And if mortal there be found, The leaf-harp sounds our roundelay, The owlet 's eyes our lanterns be; Round the wild witch-hazel tree. -Elfin Song, by Joseph Rodman Drake

In Autumn they have splendid leaf colors, as can be seen on the page with the article What a Charmnut is Witchhazel Witchhazel page of the Autumn Leaves Gallery, Medicinal Uses of Witch Hazel. The genus name is easily misunderstood as alluding to a reputed resemblance to an apple or pear tree, which it does not in any manner resemble. What the name actually intends to indicate is that the fruits remain on the branches so long that come winter when it blooms, it still has nuts on its branches. Thus Hamamelis The common name is thought to have been coined in colonial America, when a forked branch of

She called her eagle bearer down, And gave into his mighty hand The symbol ofher chosen land. . Joseph Rodman Drake. 17951820
http://bond.senate.gov/services/flagrequests.cfm
The American Flag When Freedom from her mountain height
Unfurled her standard to the air,
She tore the azure robe of night,
And set the stars of glory there.
She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
The milky baldric of the skies,
And striped its pure celestial white
With streakings of the morning light;
Then from his mansion in the sun
She called her eagle bearer down,
And gave into his mighty hand The symbol of her chosen land. Joseph Rodman Drake. 1795-1820 The red, white and blue American flag is the most visible symbol of the United States of America. It is instantly recognizable here at home and abroad as a powerful sign of freedom and the rule of law. According to U.S. law (Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 176) "the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing." American flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol are available to the public. Senator Bond can arrange to have an American flag flown over the United States Capitol for Missourians. The flags can be flown on any day of the year to honor special occasions, events, and holidays. An authentic certificate will accompany each flag showing the day it was flown and the occasion for which it was flown.

Taken from the back of the paperback edition "Spenser had gone to Londonand not to look at the Queen. He'd gone to track down a bunch of bombers who'd blown his client's wife and kids away. His job was to catch them. Or kill them. His client wasn't choosy. But there were nine killers to one Spenserlong odds that could add up to a short life. Hawk, the iron-fisted Boston enforcer, would help balance the equation. The rest would depend upon a wild plan. Spenser would get one of the terrorists to play Judas Goatto lead him to the others. Trouble was, he hadn't counted on her being very blond, very beautiful, and very, very dangerous."
Recurring Characters
  • Hawk is the only recurring character that has any significant presence in TJG. He and Spenser discuss Detective Lieutenant Martin Quirk and Henry Cimoli as men who know "how a man acts". Spenser and Hawk spend a good deal of time together, and further define their relationship in the process. Spenser mentions the incident in

NEW YORK AS A LITERARY CENTER
"Den Distelvink," a volume of verse by Steendam, published in Amsterdam, in 1649, came into competition with the growing vernacular literature of the mother country as represented by Vondel, "Father" Cats, and others, but while mainly amatory, contained lyric praise of New Amsterdam. His memorials to the Dutch East India Company urging the expansion of the African slave trade was less interesting than such lines as these, addressed to the unnamed damsels of the New Netherland: Minnaars Toegevring Lover's Complaint Segt mijn bekje Tell me, dearest Hartens Diefje Thief of my heart Waarum gekje Why trifle so Met-je-liefje? He gives thee all his love Segn hart bemind And false will never prove Nimmer vals Guhem bevind. During this early period New York was distinctly behind Boston and Philadelphia as a literary center. True, New Yorkers were thereby spared much polemical literature, and such books as John cotton's "Spiritual Milk for Boston Babes. In either England: Drawn out of the Breasts of both Testaments for their souls Nourishment. But may be of like use to any Children." This appeared in 1684, but was less popular than the Rev. James Janeway's "A Token for Children, being an Exact Account of the Conversion, Holy and Exemplary Lives and Joyous Deaths of several Young Children," which, being amplified by Cotton Mather, was brought out in Philadelphia in 1749 as a best seller by Benjamin Franklin. With the arrival in New York of William Bradford, 1693, came the real dawn of literature in New York.

    Introduction
    by Hugh C. MacDougall Both James Fenimore Cooper and his daughter Susan Fenimore Cooper habitually prefaced their works with a title-page "motto" or epigraph a few lines of borrowed verse or prose intended to set the tone of the work as a whole. Their novels usually began each chapter with a similar epigraph, in lieu of a chapter title. In this they emulated many writers of the period, most notably Sir Walter Scott, the "British Cooper." Epigraphs are an often overlooked clue to the meaning of the works in which they are used. For the Coopers, father and daughter, title-page epigraphs often seem important to the underlying theme of the novel as a whole; frequently, they seem intended to carry with them not only the selected words of the epigraph itself, but all or part of the complete work from which they have been taken. An example is the epigraph for Cooper's famous novel The Deerslayer (1841), taken from Thomas Grey's poem

    Poe's Literary Criticism
    Since most of the literary criticism of Poe's era is unsigned, attribution is a complex and divisive issue. All items included here have been attributed to Poe at one time or another, but are subject to further analysis as our project proceeds. In general, uncertain attributions are noted by the presence of a question mark ("?"), with more question marks ("?") being used to denote less certain items. A few doubtful items are included merely because they have not been disproven. Again, these marks are not definitive at this stage. At the end of each selection, beyond the "End of Text" tag, is a code, such as "[S:1]". This code is intended as an internal marker for keeping track of verification of the text. In general, a value of "[S:0]" or the total absence of the code notes that the text has been entered, but not yet verified. Anyone who has ever tried to proofread a large volume of text will appreciate the inherent difficulties.

    The Collections and Books:
    During his lifetime, Poe planned, but never published a collection of his literary notices. A posthumous collection, edited by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, incorporates a few of his reviews, taken from the material Poe had accumulated for "Literary America." These collections are listed chronologically.
