Bookologist Author Watch: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 -1930)
By Mark O'Neill
September 28, 2004 This column helps advise on which kinds of authors to watch out for and which ones to avoid when it comes to reselling. I will be highlighting one author in each Bookologist newsletter that you could look out for in your travels to buy books. Please feel free to write in and disagree with me or give your opinions. Please also email me on my Web site at http://www.camelotonline.net/aboutus.html and nominate authors you think should be included. By working together, we can perhaps compile a good list of authors that would sell well in your book business. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 -1930) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has written many books, but none have been burned more into the reader's memory than Sherlock Holmes. Every schoolchild has a hero, whether it is Superman, Spiderman or Wonderwoman. Mine was Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is perhaps one of literature's most memorable characters, and many versions have been made into television programs and movies. The TV adaptation starring Jeremy Brett made the Holmes books more desirable and created a new legion of fans. This intense media fascination with Sherlock Holmes also makes the books highly collectible and desirable, especially here in Germany. The Holmes novels appear alongside George Orwell on students' reading lists, and people here are fascinated in general with British history and English detective stories. Holmes offers all that and more. Plus Conan Doyle was a Scotsman, which is always a bonus!

Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859, into a large family with ancient historical roots. His education took place at home until he was sent away to a Jesuit school at the age of nine. He studied medicine at Edinburgh from 1876 to 1881. While at University and after, he took positions as ship’s doctor on voyages to Africa and the Artic. After completing his education, Doyle set up his own medical practice, and wrote in his spare time. His famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, was created and made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet , published in 1887. He then wrote a long historical named called Micah Clarke , published in 1889, before returning to Sherlock Holmes with The Sign of Four When the Strand magazine was created in 1891, Doyle saw it as an opportunity to revive Holmes for a series of shorter adventures. However, although the mysteries brought him success, Doyle was drawn to more serious writing and resolved to kill Sherlock Holmes. He attempted to do so in December of 1893 with The Final Problem , and afterwards wrote many other novels in various genres, but the public outcry caused him to eventually resurrect the detective for further cases. His stories were the forerunner of the great Golden Age of mystery in the 20’s and 30’s.

On this day in 1930, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died, at the age of seventy-one. Although Conan Doyle continued to write Sherlock Holmes stories throughout his last decade, many agreed with T. S. Eliot that the unstumpable hero showed evidence of "mental decay"; many others thought that Conan Doyle, the nation's most beloved rationalist, had himself gone "stark, staring mad on the subject of the dead." The Spirits of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Throughout his life Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote prolifically and in almost all genres, but by his last decade spiritualism had become his almost exclusive passion endless pamphlets and letters, seven books, and lectures on most continents. The London

Best known as creator of perhaps the most famous detective in fiction, Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh. After an education spent at Educated at Stonyhurst College and Edinburgh University he started his practice as doctor in 1882 but had to abandon it relatively soon following the enormous success of his creation, Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. Initially the character did not have such an impact on people until the short stories, later included in the Adventures , began to be published in the Strand Magazine . Doyle wrote also other mysteries ( The Doings of Raffles Haw The Mystery of Cloomber and The Surgeon of Gaster Fell ), collections of short stories, historical romances and history books on the Boer War and World War I. Unfortunately it was not the creation of Holmes that gave him the most satisfaction and Doyle was particularly annoyed that the success of his creation hindered his career as historian. He was knighted in 1902 for his activity in the Boer War. Doyle died in Crowborough, Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930.

Arthur Conan Doyle Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859. His mother, Mary, was of Irish extraction and traced her ancestry back to the famous Percy family of Northumberland and from there to the Plantagenet line. It is little wonder that the young Conan Doyle was told tales steeped in history which were to stand him in good stead when, in later years, he was to write his famous historical novels, The White Company Sir Nigel , and Micah Clarke Although the world has chosen to remember Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chiefly for his creation of the fictional master detective, Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's life, like the literary canvas he painted, was varied and highly interesting. The effect of his father's alcoholism on Conan Doyle was profound and, whilst he chose to draw a veil over this particular topic in his autobiography Memories and Adventures , alcoholism is dealt with rather severely when it appears in his later fictional work. A Study in Scarlet , which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887.
