Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
WRITER The creator of Sherlock Holmes was born at no. 11 Picardy Place. He graduated as a doctor at Edinburgh University , where, it is said, the remarkable ability of one of his teachers, Dr Joseph Bell, to make accurate deductions from his observations led Conan Doyle later to create the character of the great detective. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in a series of short stories in the Strand Magazine in 1891. Conan Doyle's talents as a story-teller are also demonstrated in his novels Micah Clarke The White Company (1890) and The Sign of Four (1890). He served as a physician in the South African War, and in later life became a well-known member of the spiritualist movement.

CONAN DOYLE Arthur (1859-1930)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Ähnlich erging es Doyle 1890 mit seinem zweiten Roman "The Sign of the Four", der ebenfalls fast unbemerkt blieb.

Sir Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930)
Famous as the author of Sherlock Holmes , Conan Doyle's career was nonetheless varied: he worked on board an Arctic whaler as a doctor, was a war correspondent in Egypt, and even stood, unsuccessfully, for Parliament. He was also an active spiritualist, and lectured on the subject in Australia, America, Canada and South Africa. Other interests included sport, photography and politics, and he was an early advocate of a channel tunnel. Conan Doyle trained as a medical doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. His career took him around the world, bringing him into contact with exotic cultures and beliefs - some of which he wove into the characters in his novels. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in

Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, and Fairies
By Donald E. Simanek Note: many images on this pages are large high resolution files and slow to load. Please be patient until they appear. While many of Arthur Conan Doyle's books are available as e-text on the Internet, and many web sites are devoted to him and his work, there's scant mention of Doyle's credulous acceptance of spiritualism, fairies and other occult ideas. This is a small effort to remedy that omission. "Modern" spiritualism began in the United States in the mid 19th century. Specifically, it arose in Western New York state, a region known to social historians for the religious fervor which made it a spawning ground for many religious sects. They refer to it as the "infected district" or the "burned over district." Spiritualism was born in the fertile religious fervor of immigrant Swedenborgians, Mesmerists, and other religions, a climate of thought receptive to spiritualist ideas. Mainstream religions promised eternal life, but in an era of emerging science which demanded verifiable physical evidence, many religious persons wished for tangible evidence of the claims of relgion, particularly of claims of an afterlife. The fox home was moved to the
spiritualist camp at Lily Dale, NY

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1859 - 1930
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in Bush Villas, Elm Grove, Southsea from 1882-1890. Born in 1859 and brought up in Scotland he came to Portsmouth to try and set up a doctor's practice. When he left in 1890 he was married and a successful doctor who played a leading role in Portsmouth's political, literary and sporting life. In his study at Bush Villas (now flats after the original house was destroyed following the war), he created the world's most famous detective - Sherlock Holmes in 1886. Doyle was a founder member of Portsmouth Football Club in 1884 and was the team's first goalkeeper. He was also captain of Portsmouth cricket team and both cricket and football teams met at the Albany Hotel in Commercial Road. He was active in local political life and was vice-president of the local Liberal Unionists. He was also secretary of the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society. In this position he met Dr James Watson of the Holmes stories. As a doctor in Elm Grove, Doyle built his practice up from small beginnings. Away from his practice he wrote plenty and the first Holmes story, 'A Study in Scarlet', was published in 1887 and was followed by 'The Sign of Four' in early 1890.
