Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 22, 1859, into an Irish Roman Catholic family of noted artistic achievement. After attending Stonyhurst College, he entered Edinburgh University as a medical student in 1876. He received a doctor of medicine degree in 1885. In his spare time, however, he began to write stories, which were published anonymously in various magazines from 1878 to 1880. After two long sea voyages as a ship's doctor, Doyle practiced medicine at Southsea, England, from 1882 to 1890. In 1885 he married Louise Hawkins and in March 1891 moved his young family to London, where he began to specialize in ophthalmology. His practice remained small, however, and since one of his anonymous stories, "Habakuk Jephson's Statement," had enjoyed considerable success when it appeared in the

About this site
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Legendary crime writer Nigel Cooper December 2002 Early life The creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859, five years after his more famous offspring, Sherlock Holmes, whose fictional birth date was 6 January 1854. The creation of a legend When he qualified, Doyle set up a medical practice in Southsea, near Portsmouth. It wasn't a great success, however, and he was left with plenty of time to write. His first published work was The Mystery of the Sasassa Valley in 1879 when he was 20. In 1885 Doyle married Louisa 'Toulie' Hawkins, with whom he would have two children. Sherlock Holmes didn't appear until 1887 when A Study in Scarlet was published in the Beeton Christmas Annual . Doyle couldn't know it then but he had made history and in the process created a character who would fast begin to outshine his creator. The Strand Magazine began to publish The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in July 1891 and Holmes, Watson and Moriarty became instant hits. In fact, the detective stories became so successful that Doyle gave up his Southsea practice and devoted all his time to writing.

A TRAGEDY
Who's that walking on the moorland?
Who's that moving on the hill?
They are passing 'mid the bracken,
But the shadows grow and blacken
And I cannot see them clearly on the hill. Who's that calling on the moorland? Who's that crying on the hill? Was it bird or was it human, Was it child, or man, or woman, Who was calling so sadly on the hill? Who's that running on the moorland? Who's that flying on the hill? But you cannot see him plain, For the shadow lies so darkly on the hill. What's that lying in the heather? What's that lurking on the hill? My horse will go no nearer, And I cannot see it clearer, But there's something that is lying on the hill. THE INNER ROOM Mine alone. I had it from my forbears Years agone. Yet within its walls I see A most motley company, And they one and all claim me As their own.

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Born in Edinburgh, Doyle studied medicine but when he could not make a living in that field, he began writing. He is best known for his Sherlock Holmes mysteries, but he also wrote historical romances and several books on Spiritualism. In his late twenties, Doyle became interested in Spiritualism. The idea of life after death remained important to him for the rest of his life, and he spoke publicly about the validity of psychics and contact with the spirits. Doyle was aware that his convictions sometimes left him open to ridicule, but, as his last surviving daughter, Dame Jean Conan Doyle said in an interview in 1990, his perseverence demonstrated great moral courage. Dame Doyle, who passed away in 1997, said people like her father "knew that the world would ridicule them, but they had the guts to stand by what they believed in." The famous mystery writer was also respected for his efforts for Britain during the Boer War and World War I. Not accepted for active duty, Doyle served in the Boer War as a physician. Later, he founded the volunteer forces and the Rifle Societies, and wrote about both wars. Of course, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known around the world as the creator of master detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson. The first Holmes book was A Study in Scarlet , which was sold for 25 pounds. By 1891, six Holmes novels had been published in

    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Today, nearly seventy years after his death, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is universally associated with his most popular literary creation, Sherlock Holmes. In fact, the hyper-rational detective is such an enduring character in western literature that he and his creator have practically become one in the popular imagination. People are inevitably surprised, then, to find out that the real Conan Doyle was a far more complex man, one whose fervent belief in Spiritualism dominated the final dozen years of his life.
Arthur Conan Doyle, born into a large Catholic family in Edinburgh, Scotland, received most of his education from the Jesuits. But by the time he enrolled at the University there to study medicine, Conan Doyle had rejected Catholicism and Christianity in general. In 1882 he joined a medical practice in Plymouth, but after quarreling with his partner, opened his own practice in Southsea. There, in the mid-1880s, several important developments occurred: he married, began studying psychic phenomena, and started spending more time writing. Sherlock Holmes debuted in 1887 in "A Study in Scarlet," and in a short time proved so popular that Conan Doyle felt compelled to "kill" him in "The Final Problem," published in 1893. Recognizing early on that his creation might become a kind of straitjacket, Conan Doyle worked hard to distance himself from Holmes and indulge his many other interests.
After a séance in which he believed he had been contacted by his son Kingsley, who had died in the War, Conan Doyle became a leader of the movement, defending it in lectures around the world. Even the embarrassing Cottingley fairy hoax, in which he had championed faked photographs of wood fairies and goblins that werelater revealed as fakes, did not deter him. "The Elusive American," on the other hand, thought he knew trickery when he saw it, and set out to punish those taking advantage of a vulnerable public. That their friendship lasted for several years is largely due to the fact that Houdini, always seeking intellectual respectabilty, deliberately hid his real feelings about Spititualism from the noted man of letters.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted in 1902, there was some speculation that the honor was bestowed to recognize his achievement in The Hound of the Baskervilles. But the more seemly prelude was his pamphlet, The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct, The Sign of the Four, has some of the elements of the adventure story for boys, with its recollection of the bloody Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Among the most notable of his historical adventures are The White Company (1891) and Sir Nigel (1906). Conan Doyle, trained in medicine and with a sharp eye for scientific and logical plausibility, also wrote a number of science fiction stories. The character Professor Challenger of 1912's The Lost World, about living remnants of the prehistoric world, did not match Holmes in popularity, but he did inspire a large following himself, and he appeared again in other science fiction adventures, including The Poison Belt in 1913, and a collection of stories published posthumously in 1952. Upon his death in 1930, Conan Doyle left his family with the conviction that he would surely communicate with them from the spirit world which he held so dear.

I'd be happy to argue the point, but it seems to me that the four greatest fictional characters of all time (excluding Don Quijote , who's in a league of his own) are : Frankenstein's monster , Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan . There are certainly no other characters who are so familiar, so often revived in plays, movies, song, television, and books, nor so often parodied and imitated as they. Take a look at your TV Guide and there'll be a movie featuring at least one of the four on the air at some point this week. They are all still just as popular as the day their authors introduced them. The reason for this is, first of all that they are simply brilliant creations, but secondly that they each in their own way tap into very powerful human fears and aspirations. Frankenstein's monster and Dracula represent victory over mortality. Tarzan represents victory over Nature. Sherlock Holmes represents the ultimate and inevitable triumph of reason over the mysteries of human behavior. Of this quartet, it is Holmes, because he is the most realistic character and because his victory seems closest to our grasp, who resonates most deeply with us. Realistically, none of us expect to gain eternal life nor to be plopped down in the jungle unexpectedly, but there's a sense in Holmes that, for all his genius, he is really just using the brain power that all of us share better than the rest of us do. As he tells Watson here, after one of his those classic moments where the good Doctor is stunned by one of Holmes's analyses :
