He studied to be a doctor at the University of Edinburgh and set up a small practice at Southsea in Hampshire during his 20s. While the practice proved largely unsuccessful, the lack of patients provided him with the opportunity to create possibly the most popular character ever introduced in the history of fiction, Sherlock Holmes. While at University, Conan Doyle had been greatly influenced by John Bell, one of his professors. Bell was an expert in the use of deductive reasoning to diagnose disease. Conan Doyle was so impressed that he used these same principles when creating his famous detective. Sherlock Holmes was introduced in A Study in Scarlet (1887), followed by

Doyle, Arthur Conan (1859-1930)
Scottish physician and author, best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories, who occasionally wrote fiction about unusual forms of life. In "When the World Screamed" (1929) he envisions the Earth as a gigantic living organism (see planets, as living beings ). The notion of refugia on a dramatic scale is the subject of his novel The Lost World (1912), while "The Horror of the Heights" takes as its (now obsolete) theme the idea of strange organisms inhabiting the upper atmosphere. BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland, into a very strict Roman Catholic family. He was educated in Jesuit schools in the United Kingdom (Stoneyhurst) and in Austria (Stella Matutina) until he was 17. Although he was apparently attracted by the mystical, sacramental, and eucharistic aspects of Catholicism, he began to doubt his faith during his years at the Jesuit schools. When Doyle entered the University of Edinburgh at age 17, he was, by his own account, a nonbeliever. "I found that the foundations not only of Roman Catholicism but of the whole Christian faith, as presented to me in nineteenth century theology, were so weak that my mind could not build upon them." These conditions had, according to Doyle, "driven me to agnosticism." It was during his university years that he came under the influence of materialists such as Joseph Bell, his self-proclaimed prototype for Sherlock Holmes, who taught his students the process of deductive reasoning through the observation of material phenomena. As a result of this training, Doyle became convinced that every mystery of life could be solved through observation and deductive reasoning. Yet despite this training, his previous rejection of Catholicism, and his self-professed agnosticism, he continued to investigate religions, because without a religious foundation he felt a void in his life.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
What a debt we all owe to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes, one of the most exciting figures in all of English fiction, not to mention Holmes' lovable, genial companion Dr. Watson and his archenemy, the evil Professor Moriarty. Indeed, so fixed a part of our lives have these characters become that thousands and thousands of visitors come each year from all parts of the globe to visit 221B Baker Street in London to see where they believe Holmes lived and worked. There is a tavern nearby, " The Sherlock Holmes " that has a small upstairs exhibition of the fictional detectives pipe, deerstalker hat and so on. We can dismiss the rest of Conan Doyle's writings and we can only be amused by his belief in the supernatural and paranormal (he could be easily fooled by even the most amateur spiritualist and charlatan, as Houdini was to discover).
Doyle's stories about the eccentric, but brilliant detective and his unfailing powers of perception were apparently based on one of his teachers at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. They first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). Evidence of his own medical training at Edinburgh surfaces from time to time in Doyle's detective stories. The instructor was greatly admired for his deductive reasoning, an attribute for which Sherlock Holmes was to become famous (Doyle then contributed additional stories in the Strand Magazine). When the writer killed off his famous detective in 1893, public demand made his restoration inevitable.

Famous Scots
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) One of seven children, Doyle was born on 22 May, 1859, the son and grandson of artists (his grandfather was a political cartoonist in "Punch" magazine). He was educated at Stoneyhurst and studied medicine at Edinburgh University . After a spell as ship's surgeon on a whaling ship, he worked as a doctor from 1882-90 in practices in Southsea and London. But the success of his early fiction encouraged him to give this up and devote himself to writing. His first short story was published in 1879. His early stories such as "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) and "Sign of the Four" (1890) introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson for the first time. Holmes was based on a forensic medicine teacher at Edinburgh University, Dr Joseph Bell. The name Holmes had been derived from the American author Oliver Wendell Holmes. His "The White Company" set in the Hundred Years' War was regarded as one of the outstanding historical novels of his time. But it was "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" published in the Strand Magazine from 1891 to 1893 which gave him immediate, widespread fame. He killed off Holmes in 1893 but he reappeared in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" published in 1902.

Updated - Sunday, 14 August, 2005 When World War One broke out in 1914 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tried to enlist in the military stating, "I am fifty-five but I am very strong and hardy, and can make my voice audible at great distances, which is useful at drill." His offer was refused but that didn't stop Sir Arthur from contributing to the war effort in every way possible. In fact, he was active in defence of his country even before war broke out. The Prince Henry Tour Conan Doyle had a strong feeling that conflict was coming after a 1911 automobile event. That year he took part in the International Road Competition organized by Prince Henry of Prussia. Known as the Prince Henry Tour, this contest was designed to pit the quality of British automobiles against German automobiles. The route took the participants from Hamburg, Germany to London. Conan Doyle and his wife, Jean, were one of the British driving teams. Each of the ninety cars involved in the contest carried a military observer from the opposite team. Conan Doyle was surprised at the hostile attitudes of many of the German observers. He also heard much talk about the inevitability of war. The British won the competition, but most of the participants came away with the conviction that war was near.
