DOUGLAS STONE Professor of Applied Physics and Physics Ph.D. MIT E-mail: douglas.stone@yale.edu Phone: 1 (203) 432-4279 Fax: 1 (203) 432-4283 My research focuses on theoretical condensed matter and optical physics, quantum transport phenomena in disordered media, mesoscopic electron physics, non-linear and chaotic dynamics, quantum and wave chaos, quantum measurement, and quantum computing. The progress in microfabrication of electronic structures has uncovered new phenomena characteristic of the mesoscopic size scale, intermediate between bulk solids and a microscopic system such as an atom for which the energy level spacing is large compared to kT at room temperature. I was one of the first theorists to emphasize the novel properties of mesoscopic systems which differentiate them from macro and micro systems. Most prominent among these are phase coherence and sample-specific fluctuations in all physical properties and the appearance of effects relating to the discreteness of electron or cooper pair charge. Related properties are high sensitivity to geometry and surface effects which can be analyzed from the semiclassical point of view in terms of regular or chaotic electron trajectories; this gives a connection to the field of quantum chaos which has been widely studied in the past decade in atomic, condensed matter and optical physics. Douglas Engelbart and 'The Mother of All Demos' Doug Engelbart's presentation at the 1968 Fall Joint Computer Conference, was a live online hypermedia demonstration of the pioneering work that Engelbart's group had been doing at SRI. Later called "The Mother of All Demos" by Andy van Dam, this historic demonstration paved the way for human-computer interaction. Sections of it are currently on display in the Exhibit on The Information Age at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. In the 1968 FJCC demonstration, Engelbart showed how the computer could be used to deal with everyday tasks. The majority of the presentation centered aound him using the computer to plan out a set of things which he had to do later. All of this information was in a simple hypertext which contained many different methods of organization, each appropriate to the task at hand. For example, the list of things which Engelbart had to do later was organized as a graphical map of the locations where he would have to go, connected by the route he would take. On the other hand, his shopping list was organized hierarchically by category and he had the ability to easily expand or elide sections of the heirarchy or move items between sections. Also, documentation for the system and other similar text was displayed and manipulated as text with inline links to other places, in a mode evocative of the WWW hypertext style. Key to Engelbart's fluid computer-human interaction was that the interface was intimately linked with the work environment and appropriate user-interface devices were used. His desk and workspace were built around the computer, it was the focus of attention, and it provided feedback such as a quiet audio tone indicating its status.

NEWS RELEASE #003-01 January 4, 2001 Hawaii servicemembers receive one of the largest BHA increases ever JOC(AW) Douglas R. K. Holl U.S. Pacific Command Public Affairs Office The Department of Defense recently announced one of the largest increases ever to the Basic Allowance for Housing rates. The new rates went into effect Jan. 1 and represent a significant increase for Hawaii servicemembers. They are part of the DoD initiative to eliminate servicemembers' out-of-pocket expenses by 2005. Two components of the improved program are geographic rate protection and a change in the survey process. Geographic rate protection maintains BAH rates at last year's level while the planned buydown in out-of-pocket expense is phased in. Newly arrived members to an area will see BAH rates equal to those of current members' rates. An important part of this year's BAH process was an improvement in the measurement of local housing costs. DoD asked the Services and local military housing offices to actively participate in the data collection process to ensure our personnel can live in quality neighborhoods. Additionally, improvements were made in how utility costs are estimated. An integral part of the BAH program is the provision of individual rate protection to all members. No matter what happens to measured housing costs, a servicemember will never see his BAH rate decrease as long as he stays in the geographic area. This policy assures that member's who have made long-term commitments in the form of a lease or contract will not be penalized if the area's housing costs decrease.
