Diplomat and travel writer In 1898 he married a cousin, Elsa Fitzgibbon, by whom he had two sons before he divorced her on the grounds of her infidelity in 1903. However, in 1897 he had become erotically involved with Michele, the 15-year-old brother of a temporary mistress, and after his divorce, his principal erotic and emotional interests were pederastic. From Capri period onwards, there are records of a succession of boyfriends, named and nameless, some short-term, others who remained friends for life. Douglas became financially impoverished after 1907 and lived in poverty for about two decades with his later companion Giuseppe Orioli in Paris, St Malo, Menton, Florence, Lisbon, and London, before returning to Capri in 1946. In 1916 he chose flight from England to Italy, skipping bail after he was charged with sexual assault of a 16-year-old boy. Douglas is chiefly remembered for his travel books about Tunisia, Calabria and Capri, published as Fountains in the Sand Siren Land (1911) and Old Calabria (1915) dealing with Italy; his novel

Norman Douglas - Famous Scots From Virtual Scotland
Norman Douglas - A Famous Scottish Writer Norman Douglas (1868 - 1952) was born in Scotland and educated partly in Germany, his early interests were scientific. In 1893 he entered the foreign service, but not remain in it for long. Much of his life was spent travelling. He is still well known for his travel books, which included Siren Land Old Calabria Alone (1921), and Together (1923). His novel South Wind in 1917 made him famous. He was a charming, witty, and urbane writer, both observant and shrewd, but his work lacked depth and variety. His autobiographical Looking Back in 1933 was as rewarding as anything he wrote. Quotes of the Day for 4 September 2004 - Education Panned
Back to School Week concludes with this issue of Quotes of the Day. As I hope has been obvious from my selections, I am a great believer in education, I appreciate those who dedicate themselves to providing it, and I applaud those who pursue their own improvement in the classroom. On the other hand, I am not cut out for learning things in class and had a fairly miserable time in school. (I think they gave me a high-school diploma for fear I would come back for another year if they didn't.) The cynic in me feels that one day of rebuttal to the rest of the week's theme is in order. Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.
Bertrand Russell Education is the state-controlled manufacture of echoes.
George Norman Douglas A high-school teacher, after all, is a person deputized by the rest of us to explain to the young what sort of world they are living in, and to defend, if possible, the part their elders are playing in it.
Emile Capouya Education is a method whereby one acquires a higher grade of prejudices.
