You can construct the character of a man and his age not only from what he does and says, but from what he fails to say and do.
Douglas, Norman
Character

There is in us a lyric germ or nucleus which deserves respect; it bids a man to ponder or create; and in this dim corner of himself he can take refuge and find consolations which the society of his fellow creatures does not provide.
Douglas, Norman

Many a man who thinks to found a home discovers that he has merely opened a tavern for his friends.

To find a friend one must close one eye to keep him, two. Douglas, Norman Friends and Friendship Shall I give you my recipe for happiness? I find everything useful and nothing indispensable. I find everything wonderful and nothing miraculous. I reverence the body. I avoid first causes like the plague. Douglas, Norman Happiness It takes a wise man to handle a lie, a fool had better remain honest. Douglas, Norman Lies and Lying Never take a solemn oath. People think you mean it. Douglas, Norman

1788-1824 British Poet There is something pagan in me that I cannot shake off. In short, I deny nothing, but doubt everything. Skepticism Byron, Lord 1788-1824 British Poet Skepticism, as I said, is not intellectual only; it is moral also; a chronic atrophy and disease of the whole soul. A man lives by believing something; not by debating and arguing about many things. A sad case for him when all that he can manage to believe is something he can button in his pocket, and with one or the other organ eat and digest! Lower than that he will not get. Norman Douglas (1868-1952) The modern Englishman abroad is a toe-curling embarrassment. Underwashed and superior-minded backpackers. Trippers who treat Tuscany as an annexe of Sainsburys. Those who bring Saturday-night Stoke to the Mediterranean. All have missed the real point of foreign travel: misbehaviour of a grand, stylish and near-unforgivable nature. Not so Norman Douglas. This Old Uppinghamian long ago won the gong for louche behaviour abroad. Like many homosexuals of his generation, Douglas found sunnier lands more congenial. He first worked a diplomat in Russia and Italy before finding his vocation as a travel writer. His debut Unprofessional Tales was followed by three travel books, Siren Land Fountains in the Sand (1912) and Old Calabria (1915). Douglas's only popular success was his novel South Wind (1917).

Digital Text Birds And Beasts of the Greek Anthology Norman Douglas Chapman and Hall Ltd., London, 1928 While not dealing with the middle ages directly, this book is of interest in the study of the bestiary genre. It explores the appearance of animals in the the Greek Anthology, a collection of lyrical poems, epigrams, oracles, epitaphs and enigmas written by many Greek authors of antiquity. Medieval authors of beast texts were influenced by these poems; even if they did not have access to the poems themselves, they certainly had indirect access through later Latin authors (such as Pliny the Elder) who used many of the animal descriptions in their own works. Beast tales found in the Anthology are are also found, relatively unchanged, in medieval texts. Norman Douglas (1868-1952) was born in Austria to a Scottish father and a Scottish-German mother. He entered the British Foreign Office in 1893 and served as a diplomat in St. Petersburg. Douglas purchased property on Capri, but after financial difficulties in 1907 he existed in near poverty for almost two decades as he lived at times in Paris, Florence, Lisbon, and London, before returning to Capri in 1946. He wrote novels, autobiographical works and travel books, including
