A Story of the Twentieth Century
Donnelly, Ignatius. Nicholas Ruddick, ed.
A sensational best-seller envisions the destruction of New York City. Published in 1890, Caesar's Column is an account of a trip to New York City in 1988 by a visitor from the Swiss colony of Uganda. The great metropolis dazzles with its futuristic technology, but its ostentatious wealth and luxury mask the brutal repression of the laboring classes by their rich bosses. The workers, aided by international terrorists, stage a violent revolt and the narrator flees the devastated city by airship to found an agrarian utopia in Africa.

Contemporary interest in Atlantis
can be traced back to a self-educated American politician named Ignatius T. T. Donnelly
(1831-1901). After serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota and later as a congressman, Donnelly
retired from politics in 1870 after a defeat at the polls. He devoted the rest of his life to writing and research. Among his many theories were the argument that the Pleistocene Ice Age was caused by the collision of the earth with a comet, and the suggestion that it was Sir Francis Bacon who really wrote Shakespeare's plays. Both of these ideas have become the subjects of popular cult followings and are alive and well today.
Far more important was Donnelly's interest in Atlantis . More than any other writer

When the Civil War began and teaching work was no longer feasible in Kentucky, McGill left for Minnesota, arriving June 10, 1861. He became principal of the public school in St. Peter, Minnesota, in August 1862. In that same year, at the age of 22, McGill enlisted in Company D, Ninth Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers. In 1863 he was discharged for disability. Soon after his discharge he was elected county superintendent of public schools (Nicollet County, Minnesota), a position he filled for two terms.
