Ignatius Donnelly (1831-1901)
"Prophet, visionary, radical reformer - Ignatius Donnelly gave years of dedicated service to his nation, and an equal share to the timeless legend."
Marjorie Braymer
Ignatius Donnelly, an Irish writer, lawyer, and politician is remembered primarily for his extensive work on Atlantis. Donnelly's theories are the basis for much of the Atlantis belief today, including the placement and timing of the Atlantis disaster.
Although he was a native of Philadelphia, and practiced law there for a few years, Donnelly decided to explore new territory in the hopes of creating the ultimate utopia. In 1856 he and his wife, Katherine, left Pennsylvania for Minnesota, and with the help of a handful of partners created a mini-utopia in Nininger City, seventeen miles south of St. Paul. This cooperative farm failed after the real estate crash of 1857, but its failure ushered in Donnelly's political career (Braymer, 108).
When Minnesota became a state in 1859 Donnelly was elected lieutenant governor, was re-elected in 1861, and later served in Congress as a Republican from 1863 till 1869. As a politician, Donnelly was known as an extreme liberal, voicing his support for women's suffrage and anti-slavery movements. His credibility had been established years before as a result of his journalism work as well as his research on Shakespeare's plays. Yet when colleagues discovered the massive amounts of time Donnelly spent in the Library of Congress, researching the lost civilization of Atlantis, his character was called into question (Braymer, 109).

Born in Pennsylvania of Irish parents, Ignatius Donnelly attended the free public schools and read law in Philadelphia. Interested in real estate promotion, he moved to Minnesota in 1856 and established the Emigrant Aid Journal to promote settlement. Minnesota Historical Society Stephen Holt describes how the works and beliefs of an American congressman influenced pre-Federation Australia and the early Labor Party, and are still echoed in the beliefs of the anti-globalisation movement today I n 1901, on the very same day that Australia became a Federation, a former United States congressman died in Minnesota. Although it would appear hard to imagine two more seemingly unrelated centenaries, there is in fact a strong connection, since the broader political views of the congressman in question—Ignatius Donnelly—embodied an American brand of iconoclasm that also appealed to many pre-Federation Australians. Using a wide array of original and published material available in the National Library of Australia, it is possible to chart Donnelly’s powerful influence on Australia’s political culture at a crucial stage in its development. The Minnesota equivalent of King O’Malley, Ignatius Donnelly is the subject of an impressive modern biography by the American historian Professor Martin Ridge. Much of the original documentation relied on by Professor Ridge is deposited in the Minnesota Historical Society where it has been reproduced on microfilm. This invaluable scholarly resource now forms part of the National Library’s Newspaper and Microform Collection. Comprising more than 160 reels of microfilm, it amply documents a robust political and literary career which eventually resonated from Minneapolis to Melbourne.

In Search of the Lost Civilisation Nearly all of the ‘lost civilisation’ theories have become associated with the legend of Plato’s ‘Atlantis’, thus the concept and its study have been largely ignored by the serious academic community. Yet ironically it is probably the legend of Atlantis itself, however fanciful, that has provided the foundation for the belief in the existence in a pre-historic civilisation to account for the out-of-place knowledge and artefacts detailed in previous chapters. Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato in his work, the ‘ Timaeus ’, in which he detailed the mighty island of Atlantis and its proud peoples who, is the course of "a single day and night" were swept by earthquake and flood into the depths of the ocean’. Despite his pupil Aristotle’s belief that the story was fantasy, invented to moralise on the nature and consequences of human ambition, Plato was adamant that the former existence of Atlantis was a matter of historical fact. Whatever the truth, the legend certainly was considered factual for many centuries with even mediaeval sea-charts showing unknown ‘Atlantis’ islands. Yet if there was a ‘lost civilisation’ (regardless of its connection with or not to the Atlantis legend) it would have had to have had a home, and any identified location would have to provide supporting evidence that a civilisation actually did live there, for, as Egyptologist Mark Lehner rightly points out, without evidence of remains, it would be safer to conclude that that there was no former civilisation, and the purported clues to its existence would have to be explained in some other way.

FOOTNOTE PEOPLE IN U.S. HISTORY IGNATIUS DONNELLY (1831-1901). Apostle of protest. In the 1890s, a short, chubby nonconformist with a fierce dedication to protecting the underdog jolted the political establishment with a people's protest that changed the course of American history. Ignatius Donnelly, the "Apostle of Protest," had been stirring the pot of rebellion for 30 years ricocheting politically from one third party to another, trumpeting a call to arms against usurious bankers, greedy middlemen, and the land-grabbing, rate-rigging railroads. As industrialism widened the gap between the masses and the privileged classes, the pot came to a rolling boil. Farmers and workers, infuriated by a political system they considered to be a "tool of big business," turned to their indomitable champion. Almost single-handed, Donnelly welded a fractious army of rebels into the National People's, or Populist, party. When he leaped onto the convention platform in 1892, 4,000 Populists let out a roar that "rose like a tornado." His blue eyes blazing, Donnelly electrified the crowd: "We meet in the midst of a nation brought to the verge of moral, political, and material ruin ... the fruits of the toil of millions are stolen to build up colossal fortunes ... governmental injustice [breeds] the two great classestramps and millionaires ..." He ticked off the Populist planks designed "to restore the government to the hands of the 'plain people'": free silver, a graduated income tax, the eight-hour workday, women's suffrage, and direct election of senators.

Biography of Populist Protester Ignatius Donnelly Part 2
About the Populist leader and protester Ignatius Donnelly, history and biography of the political figure.
FOOTNOTE PEOPLE IN U.S. HISTORY IGNATIUS DONNELLY (1831-1901). Apostle of protest. Donnelly had turned an important corner. Never again would he knuckle under to party policy. Subsequently, he bounced from the Granger movement to the Greenback party, from Farmers' Alliance to the Populist party, drumming always for the reform of a government rigged to benefit industry. He was a ferocious independent. "If a platform is demanded, I plant myself on the platform of Ignatius Donnelly," he said. But he paid a high price for this independence. Although he continued to serve in the Minnesota legislature, he never again held a federal office. After reaching the age of 50, Donnelly retired to his book-lined study in deserted Nininger City long enough to write Atlantis: The Antediluvian World (1882), in which he contended that the legendary lost continent not only had existed, but had been the cradle of civilization. Encouraged by Atlantis's runaway success, energetic Ignatius squeezed time from his perpetual politicking and his popular lecture tours to write seven more books. They were as controversial as his political views; he was still the "Prince of Cranks." In 1888 he unleashed a thunderbolt on the literary community. He was convinced that Shakespeare was nothing but "a guzzling, poaching, lying play-actor," and that the plays attributed to him had actually been written by Sir Francis Bacon. But how to prove it? One day he picked up his son's copy of Every Boy's Book and found his inspiration in a chapter on cryptography. After months of analyzing a facsimile of a Shakespeare folio, he wrote The Great Cryptogram. He had "found" an incredibly complex cipher in the plays which, he insisted, proved Bacon's authorship. The Baconian Society invited him to come to England, where he debated a Shakespearean scholar before 500 people. In an audience vote, his arguments for Bacon were defeated 120 to 101. "But," he gleefully reported, "nearly 300 were so bewildered they refused to vote!" The book itself was a financial flop, but his amazed followers hailed him as the "sage of Nininger."
