Philadelphia. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and in 1856 moved to Minnesota. There he gained political prominence, was lieutenant governor (1859–63), Congressman (1863–69), and a state legislator. Strongly expounding agrarian reform, he was a founder and leader of the Populist party and the author of the ringing preamble to the party platform of 1892. He edited the weekly Anti-Monopolist (1874–79) and the Populist Representative (1894–1901). His many popular works included Atlantis: The Antediluvian World (1882), an erudite but fanciful work on Atlantis Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel (1883); two books arguing that Bacon wrote the Shakespearean plays; and a gloomy Utopian novel, Caesar's Column Works Works by Ignatius Donnelly Caesar's Column: A Study of the Twentieth Century . The Minnesota politician and liberal reformer and future populist presidential candidate provides an anti-Semitic vision of what life would be like in New York City in 1988. Airships, magnetic lights, and instant communication have been invented, and the working class is controlled by an oligarchy of Jews, who through Darwinian selection have developed the cunning and deceit necessary to dominate the city.

Ignatius Donnelly was born in Philadelphia on November 3, 1831. "He graduated from the High School of Philadelphia at the age of nineteen, with high honors, and immediately commenced the study of law. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1853, and immediately commenced practice in that city . . . ." ["Hon. Ignatius Donnelly," in W.J. Arnold (ed.), The Poets and Poetry of Minnesota 151-161 (Chicago: S.P. Rounds, Books and Job Printers, 1964)] Donnelly moved to Minnesota in 1857 and two years later was elected lieutenant governor (1860-1863). He was elected to Congress and served from 1863 to 1869). He served in the Minnesota Legislature various terms: 1874-78, 1887, 1891-93, and 1897. He died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 1, 1901; interment in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota. by Norm Wolcott
This is a message which Norm Wolcott posted to the Gutenburg Project discussion list. Norm produced the Gutenburg Project text of Atlantis, the Antediluvian World using the Sacred-texts version. I have posted this with his kind permission. With the posting of "Atlantis-The Antediluvian World" by Ignatius Donnelly, the following may be of interest. I remember seeing Donnelly's grey pigskin gloves, top hat, on a table and his ivory headed cane in an umbrella stand in the foyer. The house apparently had original furniture in it. Nininger was to profit by being a stop on the river boat trade which plyed the Mississippi from St. Paul, Hastings, on to Red Wing and Frontenac. The all-weather railroad built inland ended this speculation. I believe all is now gone, no one wants to have a historic building on their land any more. (see attached Nininger bibliographya fruitless attempt was apparently made between 1932 and 1948 to save Donnelly's house and make the surrounding Nininger a state park) The Minnesota Historical Society which has a web site has a large collection of Donnelly books and materials. As a high school student working in the library I read Donnelly's "The Cipher in the Plays and on the Tombstone" which I was told I should not be reading. It concludes with a decipherment that "Bacon wrote Shakespeare, Greene, and Marlowe's works". At least the book was not removed by the censors. Donnelly's political contributions may have been marginal, but with "Atlantis" he created the genre of "pseudo-science" culminating in such works as I. A Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision". And the impetus given to the Shakespeare myth has lasted over a century.

Atlantis the Antediluvian World
Introduction by J.B. Hare
Ignatius Donnelly (1831-1901), lawyer, land promoter, politician and virtuoso author, is today best known for his pioneering work on the subject of Atlantis, "Atlantis the Antediluvian World" (ATAW). Published in 1882, ATAW is one of the best constructed Atlantis theories, as it makes no recourse to occult or 'channeled' information. Donnelly's lucid style and command of the facts (such as they were) make the book readable and compelling even today. At the center of Donnelly's thesis are a set of similarities between widely separated cultures. This he interpreted as evidence that all civilization diffused outward from a central point (a now sunken continent in the mid-Atlantic). He cites mythological, linguistic, ethnographic and other evidence for this theory, which at the time seemed to add up to an airtight case. Donnelly proposes a literal interpretation of Plato's account of Atlantis. He also ties Atlantis into the global flood myth-complex. These, until recently, have been two of the most compelling unsolved puzzles of history. What was Plato writing about when he described the prehistoric civilization of Atlantis, which disappeared overnight in a great catastrophe? Was this an actual historical account, or a philosophical fable? And why do widely separated cultures on every continent, Australia, the Americas, Europe and Asia all have a similar myth of a great flood from which only a few humans survived to restart civilization?
