George MacDonald The novels of George MacDonald all have a common link. I believe his purpose in writing is for characters and his readers to experience spiritual growth by witnessing the New Testament as lived through others. " It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling."- Elizabeth Yates, an editor for one of MacDonald’s novels. MacDonald’s main characters live out and apply the word, the lessons, and the life and character of Christ with excellence. The characters become part of the readers life, forever to be remembered and easily recalled when the reader finds himself in similar situations. MacDonald’s flavorful words and ability make the stories so real and captivates his readers. They left me encouraged, strengthened and caused me to question priorities, examining What is most important? What is my purpose? His books inspire the readers to be more thankful and more helpful to others. -mystical creatures
-humans with such unreal powers
-spiritual beings that are good but yet detestable in shape, form or appearance

Ankeny, Rebecca Thomas
Lewiston N.Y.: Edwin Mellen Press, 2000. 235 x 160 mm, 156 p, h/b, ISBN 0-7734-7728-4. This important book was unfortunately received too late for a full review to be published in the present issue of North Wind . Its importance lies primarily in the fact that Ankeny has recognised how thoroughly MacDonald "understands the intricate relationship between textuality, authorship, readership and authority," as Roderick McGillis expresses it in his preface (viii). Very many readers of MacDonald have intuited this fact, but have not brought it fully to consciousness. Ankeny's analyses of some of MacDonald's novels on this basis Ankeny's introductory chapter serves its purpose to prepare the reader for her principal themes, although it has some glaring omissions. For example, there is no exploration, here or elsewhere in the book, of how MacDonald's thinking developed over the period of his writing career. This first chapter is hard reading, but Ankeny becomes inspired when she starts to explore specific texts. Sir Gibbie is the main subject of chapter 2, subtitled "Literacy, Humanity and Epistemology."

Memorial review of "George MacDonald: A Study of Two Novels."
William Webb. Part of volume 11 of Romantic Reassessment . Salzburg, 1973.
William Webb's aim in this study is to examine two "rather neglected" novels of George MacDonald in order to bring out "what is most characteristic in them of the author's undoubted genius" (105). He sets out to demonstrate that Mary Marston is "a capable piece of fiction" (58), and his discussion of Home Again , though brief, brings out several interesting features of the novel. I have chosen to comment on aspects of his study which give the reader fresh insights, and illuminate less well-known areas of MacDonald's writing. The study itself is rather loosely structured, with the plan and links between the topics not always clear; and it is frustrating that Webb almost never gives sources for the many quoted passages, and often drops in references-for example a comparison with Dickens in Hard Times or Our Mutual Friend without any supporting detail to contextualise his comments. Having said this, I found myself impressed by many of the issues discussed, and interested in the directions (sometimes quite obscure and fascinating) in which he points the reader. Additionally, his exploration of some of the literary sources and artistic relationships recognisable in

Though in his time MacDonald was one of Britain’s top-selling and most respected authors, in the twentieth century his books gradually became unavailable. The time eventually came when not a single original full-length novel, not a single volume of poetry, not a single original sermon, and not a single literary essay of George MacDonald’s was to be found in print on either side of the Atlantic. A great literary and spiritual legacy seemed in danger of being lost.

Ordained a Congregational minister, he eventually abandoned his vocation to become a writer and free-lance preacher. His first published works were several volumes of poetry, including the narrative poem Within and Without Phantastes (1858), and Lilith (1895), the last two both moral allegories. Macdonald achieved his first real success with his novels of life in rural Scotland, notably David Elginbrod Alec Forbes (1865), and Robert Falconer (1867). His lasting reputation, however, rests upon his superb allegorical fairy stories for children; they include At the Back of the North Wind The Princess and the Goblin (1872), and The Princess and Curdie Bibliography See biography by his son Greville Macdonald (1924, repr. 1971). The Story, the Teller and the Audience in George MacDonald's Fiction, Part of the problem is intrinsically connected to the novels themselves. In selecting materials for George MacDonald: An Anthology (1947), even C. S. Lewis, an admirer, commented that "necessity made George MacDonald a novelist, but few of his novels are good and none is very good" (xxxii). Who, nowadays, invests the time and energy necessary to sit down with David Elginbrod Robert Falconer Wilfrid Cumbermede Sir Gibbie (1879), and
