Mummy remembers the day that she found out she was pregnant, the 25th of June 2003 - it was a very strange feeling of excitement but tinged with a little fear and sadness because we had lost a wee one before you but who was much younger than you are. As the weeks passed our confidence grew - especially after the first trimester - it was then that we felt we could begin to anticipate your arrival and share our news with friends and family. The first weeks of pregnancy were not easy as Mummy suffered from terrible morning sickness and was even signed off work for two weeks! The weeks gradually passed, we collected lots of tiny clothes, books and teddies for you, not yet knowing if you were a girl or a boy. We ordered your buggy, Moses basket; cot and bouncer chair from 'Babies 'R' Us' and began to make plans to build a house. We went to our antenatal classes every week on a Monday afternoon for four weeks. Daddy even fell asleep in one and started groaning, much to Mummy's horror! On the 30th of December Mummy and Daddy were sitting with their friends whos' baby was due soon too - we had gone through our pregnancies together anticipating that you and their wee baby would grow up together and be great friends. Thier baby moved and we very visibly saw him or her, (at that time not knowing if they were expecting a girl or boy) kick and our hearts sank with the realisation that you used to do that - we became very concerned and very scared. We decided to call the surgery and go in to hear your heartbeat - not for one minute did we ever anticipate what was about to happen.

"There is a love of complexity here in America... pure Space waits the Surveyor,- no previous Lines, no fences, no streets to constrain polygony however extravagant,- angles pushing outward and inward,- all Sides zigging and zagging, going ahead and doubling back, making Loops inside Loops,- in America, 'twas ever, Poh! to Simple Quadrilaterals."
I n the summer of 1997 a force like a gravitational field drew me to reading Thomas Pynchon's Mason and Dixon . Perhaps it was its subjects, Enlightenment science and the contradictions in American democracy that came to be marked by Mason and Dixon's famous line. Perhaps it was the rumored portraits of colonial America, especially Philadelphia, near where I live. Perhaps it was that I heard that in Mason Pynchon had created his greatest straight man, in Dixon his liveliest comic hero. At any rate, I bought the book soon after summer vacation began and read its first pages in a subterranean coffee shop in Philadelphia (without yet realizing how appropriate such a setting would be). Once I began reading Mason and Dixon I could not put it down for long. Not only was the humor irresistible, making me remember how much I'd enjoyed encountering the bad song lyrics or following that ricocheting aerosol can in the second chapter of

The BWI Trail
A Recreational Resource for Communities of Anne Arundel County Welcome to the BWI Trail! We are proud to provide the communities of northern Anne Arundel County with a recreational resource to share with family and friends. To our knowledge, BWI Airport is the only U.S. airport to have a dedicated hiker/biker trail, and its success is evidenced by people like you who have been using it every day since the first sections opened on July 23, 1994.
The 12.5-mile scenic trail encircles airport property and connects hikers, bicyclists, walkers and joggers to community resources, public transportation and area attractions. Most of the trail is constructed of asphalt; however, wooden boardwalks were used in environmentally sensitive areas to protect natural features. The trail has been built and maintained through a public/private cooperative effort that includes the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Maryland Aviation Administration, the State Highway Administration, the BWI Airport Neighbors Committee, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Mass Transit Administration. Rangers from the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks routinely patrol the BWI Trail during daylight hours.

Environmental Anthropology And Conflict Resolution Concentration
Background In Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict Michael Klare (2002) writes: "Conflict over valuable resources- and the power and wealth they confer- has become an increasingly prominent feature of the global landscape. Often intermixed with ethnic, religious, and tribal antagonisms, such conflict has posed a significant and growing threat to peace and stability in many areas of the world" (p. ix).
Concentration The above is the broad context of the Environmental Anthropology and Conflict Resolution Concentration as an optional track within the Ecological Anthropology Program at UH . Basically, this concentration operates at the interface of culture, ecology, and peace. More specifically, this concentration explores the connections among diverse phenomena pursued by researchers in cultural anthropology, ecological anthropology, political ecology, the anthropology of war and peace, applied anthropology, and advocacy anthropology and human rights. The applied component of ecological anthropology is now distinguished as environmental anthropology.

Vol. 2 No. 4, Winter 1997/1998 (#8) "The Plug" The Writer Reads: Stephen Dixon on Thomas Bernhard By Stephen Dixon I did a coupla readings for my last novel, Gould , and at one of them a guy in the audience said "Were you influenced by Thomas Bernhard?" and I said "Why, because of the long paragraphs? To tell you the truth, I know he has a great reputation but I started two Bernhard books and I didn't think he did the long paragraph that well. They were repetitive, a bit formally and almost too rigidly written, and I often lost track of the story in them, and other things why I didn't like them, although what, I forget." "No," he said, "or maybe that, but also because Gould is a character in one of his books too, The Loser . I just thought it was too much of a coincidence that you hadn't read a lot of him and been influenced," and I said "Gould? That guy's name in his book is Gould? I thought I made up that forename," and he said "Glenn Gould," and I said "No, my character is Gould Bookbinder and he doesn't play the piano though I think he does love Bach above all composers and especially the composition Gouldberg Variations ," and he said "That's another thing. The first part of your novel is about variations of a single theme, abortions, right?or that's what you said," and I said, "So, another coincidence. But you made me interested; I'll read

Thomas Pynchon , Rowohlt 2001 (TB)

Donations delivered, "but this is just a start"
BY MATTHEW McCORMICK
Bulletin Staff Writer After almost two weeks of donating, collecting and caring, area residents' offerings to the victims of Hurricane Katrina are reaching those who need them most. A five-member team from Victory International Ministries of Victory Baptist Church in Fieldale arrived Wednesday at a Hearts With Hands distribution center in Ocean Center, Miss. There, they unloaded two tractor-trailer trucks filled with donations of everything from food to soap, said Charlie Tunnell, who manages the church's food bank. "We brought everything people could think to give," he said. "Some churches opened up their food supplies and just gave us case after case of food. It's just been an amazing thing." The group left Fieldale on Tuesday morning with two trucks, one full and one empty, both donated by Gary Hodges Trucking. They arrived that evening at the Asheville, N.C., headquarters of Hearts With Hands, a disaster relief organization. After filling the second truck with donations brought to that headquarters, the Fieldale team, which also includes Danny Hodges, Joshua Arrington, Kelvin Wright and Chris Thompkins, made its way to the Hearts With Hands distribution center at Ocean Center.
