July 31, 2005: Two new articles have appeared in The Globe and Mail recently. Links to the PDF documents are available on What's New and Popular Writing
May 8, 2005: I'm writing a book about the rising likelihood of the breakdown of the economic, political, technological, and ecological systems that sustain humankind. If this breakdown occurs, what should we do to limit its severity, and how can we benefit from it? If we are going to adapt successfully to an increasingly complex and fast-paced world, I argue, certain kinds of breakdown are natural and even necessary. Publication date: August 2006. 24. The Ingenuity Gap
Thomas HomerDixon's study of a world becoming too complex and too fast-paced to manage. Includes forum, a writing contest, suggested readings and links.
http://homerdixon.com/ingenuitygap/
Can we solve the problems of the future? Thomas Homer-Dixon tackles this question in a groundbreaking study of a world becoming too complex and too fast-paced to manage. The challenges we face converge, intertwine, and often remain largely beyond our understanding. Most of us suspect that the "experts" don't really know what's going on and that as a species we've released forces that are neither managed nor manageable. This is the ingenuity gap, the critical gap between our need for ideas to solve complex problems and our actual supply of those ideas. Poor countries are particularly vulnerable to ingenuity gaps, but our own rich countries are no longer immune, and we're all caught dangerously between a soaring requirement for ingenuity and an increasingly uncertain supply. As the gap widens, the result can be political disintegration and violent upheaval. With riveting anecdotes and lucid argument, Thomas Homer-Dixon uses his ingenuity theory to suggest how we might approach these problems in our own lives, our thinking, our businesses, and our societies.

So where does that leave Thomas Pynchon, whose current offering weighs in at close to eight hundred pages - and of often-impenetrable stylized "old english" text, no less? The real Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, America's original sub-dividers, took upon themselves the promethean task of imposing the first trace of order upon the wilderness that was the new world, drawing their famous line demarcating north and south. With his fanciful re-imagining of Messrs. Mason and Dixon, Pynchon has created a veritable universe, similarly bewildering and untamed, for readers to divide and conquer if they can. is a sprawling muddle of historical fact, surreal fancy, fable, fantasy, and occasional silliness, underpinned by the quiet insistence - supported, at times, more by faith than evidence - that somehow it all can make sense; that somehow, given enough courage, dogged determination, or blind luck, order can be either alchemically divined from chaos or forced upon it. Like American civilization, both past and present.

Biography of Jeremiah Dixon From the Oxford University Press National Dictionary of Biography
[Provided by Daniel O'Hara] Name: Dixon, Jeremiah
    Dates: 1733-1779
    Active Date: 1773
Gender: Male Field of Engineering, Construction, Naval
    Interest: Architecture and Surveying, Science
    and Mathematics, Space and Aviation
    Occupation: Surveyor and astronomer
Place of Birth: Bishop Auckland, county Durham
Education: John Kipling's School in Barnard Castle Death: Cockfield, county Durham Spouse: Unmarried Dixon, Jeremiah 1733-1779, surveyor and astronomer, was born in Bishop Auckland, county Durham, 27 July 1733, the fifth of the seven children of George Dixon, a well-to-do Quaker coalmine owner, and his wife Mary Hunter of Newcastle. He was educated at John Kipling's School in Barnard Castle, where he acquired an interest in mathematics and astronomy. While still a young man in south Durham, he made the acquaintance of the mathematician William Emerson, the instrument-maker John Bird, and the natural philosopher Thomas Wright [qq.v.]. In 1760 the Royal Society chose Charles Mason [q.v.] to go to Sumatra to observe the 1761 transit of Venus, and, probably on Bird's recommendation, Mason suggested Dixon should go as his assistant. An encounter with a French frigate delayed their final sailing so that they could not reach Sumatra in time. They therefore landed at the Cape of Good Hope, where the transit was successfully observed on 6 June 1761. On the passage home, they stopped at St Helena in October and, after discussion with Nevil Maskelyne [q.v.], who had observed the transit there, Dixon returned temporarily to the Cape with Maskelyne's clock to carry out gravity experiments.
