65. Notes For 300+ Cryptograms No. 1
Benjamin Disraeli. 18041881-British Prime Minister In 1878 Disraeli waselevated to the House of Lords as the Earl of Beaconsfield.
http://cryptograms.ca/300series1.htm
BOUQUET OF CRYPTOGRAMS NOTES OF INTEREST Chiasmus (k I -az'm u s) Fair is foul, and foul is fair. -Macbeth -consists of two parallel phrases in which corresponding words are placed in the opposite order. The Oxford English Dictionary defines chiasmus as, "A grammatical figure by which the order of words in one of two parallel clauses is inverted in the other." The word goes back to the ancient Greeks. The "chi" comes from chi, the letter "X" in the Greek alphabet. The word itself comes from the Greek word khiasmos, meaning "crossing." Khiasmos, in turn, is derived from the Greek word khiazein, meaning "to mark with an X." We all know examples of chiasmus, even if we don’t know the term. Two of the better known examples are Mae West’s “ It’s not the men in my life, but the life in my men.” and President Kennedy’s “ Ask not what your country...” . I introduced this literary device on my cryptogram website in 2001 to pleasant acceptance and so have included it in this special edition of the magazine. The book pictured was written in 1999 by Dr. Mardy Grothe, a psychologist and word lover from Boston. It contains many great examples and a full explanation of chiasmus. It is available from Amazon and other book stores as a paper back.

Some famous (and infamous ) critiques by and about critics...
"Never trust the artist. Trust the tale. The proper function of the critic is to save the tale from the artist who created it."
ATTRIBUTION: D.H. (David Herbert) Lawrence (1885-1930), British author. Originally published by T. Seltzer (1923). "The Spirit of Place," Studies in Classic American Literature , ch. 1, Doubleday (1959).
"A wise scepticism is the first attribute of a good critic."
ATTRIBUTION: James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) Among my Books. First Series. Shakespeare once more "People ask you for criticism, but they only want praise."
Somerset Maugham. "What we ask of [the critic] is that he should find out for us more than we can find out for ourselves."
Arthur Symons. "Impersonal criticism is like an impersonal fist fight or an impersonal marriage, and as successful."
George Jean Nathan. "Just in proportion as he is sentient and restless, just in proportion as he reacts and reciprocates and penetrates, is the critic a valuable instrument."
Henry James.

Brighton, Sussex: Harvester Press Microform Publications, 1978. 6 reels. COVERAGE The reports from 1837-1867 are comprised of British prime ministers' handwritten reports to the monarch on proceedings of cabinet meetings. These manuscript letters represent the sole official record of the deliberations of Cabinet. Prime Ministers such as Melbourne, Peel, Russell and Palmerston wrote confidential memoranda for Queen Victoria on all major questions of the day. Their reports cover the three decades when the Great Reform Acts of 1832, civil disturbances and the Chartist Riots contributed to unprecedented economic and social change. The reports from 1867-1916 include 1,700 confidential manuscript letters preserved in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. These letters are the only official record of cabinet meetings, decisions and discussions for this time, as no other historical record was allowed to be kept. The Prime Minister, as the Crown's first confidential adviser, was required to send a report to the sovereign after every cabinet meeting. Only he was permitted to take notes of Cabinet proceeedings, and his personal letters were written the same day and prepared in his own hand. They range from short statements to detailed accounts of arguments put forth and decisions taken. A wide range of subjects is covered, with the greatest emphasis on political activity in Great Britain.
