National Trust. When Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) determined that his rising ambitions required a personal motto, he chose forti nihil difficile, or "nothing is difficult to the strong." Strength of will, one assumesfor a Jew in pre-Victorian England had barriers before him that would have dissuaded most aspirants for status. Until 1829, Roman Catholics were disenfranchised, and could not hold public office or be involved in such professions as law. Universities were also closed to them. For Disraeli, born Benjamin D'Israeli in Bloomsbury, where his father was a dilettante man of letters, the path was smoothed by the nonbelieving Isaac, who, cynically, had his son converted, at twelve, to the Anglican persuasion, to open up opportunities.
Always a romantic, Disraeli liked to believe that his ancestors were cultured Jews from Golden Age Spain, but in reality his grandfather had emigrated from Cento, in Italy near Ferrara, where he was a seller of straw hats. The family, before that, had probably come from Syria or Turkey. His recollections would sometimes claim Venice for his family. If their origins had to be in Italy, he preferred the most exotic of Italian places. He liked to think of himself as an aristocrat, even if not of the Anglo-Saxon variety.

The Tories would fragment on the issue of free trade, and Disraeli, a loyalist, inherited some of the remaining prominence within the party. On becoming a minority government in 1852, he would achieve cabinet office for the first time, as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The experience was brief, but it whetted his appetite for power and position, which left him in a quandary as the Commons debated, year after year, the issue of amending its oaths requirement to permit Jews to sit. Several, including Lionel de Rothschild, one of the world's most influential bankers, had run time and time again, rejected after each election by their refusal to take a parliamentary oath on the Christian bible. Rothschild had already turned down a baronetcy from Victoria, as only a barony would place him in the House of Lords, where he might defy the oaths requirement in the upper house.

Introduction
This digital version of the Bodleian exhibition (held 4 November 2003-1 May 2004) marks the culmination of a project which began in the late 1990s with the decision taken by the National Trust, the owners of Disraeli's private papers, and the Bodleian Library, the custodians, to commemorate the bicentenary of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-81). The book Benjamin Disraeli, Scenes from an Extraordinary Life (Bodleian Library, 2003), edited by Helen Langley which accompanied the exhibition included essays written by the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Clark, QC, MP, Dr Angus Hawkins, Annabel Jones, Dr Timothy Mowl, Dr Roland Quinault and Jane Ridley. Images relating to the essays also feature in this digital version (see Items 1, 22, 44, 76, 60, 30, 72). With an award from the Mellon-funded Oxford Digital Library (ODL) the original exhibition has been digitised (with the exception of one or two items) and extended to include letters in their entirety and new items offered for inclusion.

The exhibition Scenes from an Extraordinary Life focuses on some of the key stepping stones in Disraeli's long and fascinating life. The exhibition draws mainly on Disraeli's private papers held in the Library on deposit from the National Trust, the owners of Hughenden Manor, Disraeli's Buckinghamshire home, and additional material lent by the John Murray Archive and three private collectors. En route he had split the Conservatives by spearheading the defeat of Sir Robert Peel over the repeal of the corn laws, practically invented the role of Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons in the 1850s, set in process the modernisation of the Conservative party's organisation, served three times as Chancellor of the Exchequer, piloted the 1867 Reform Bill through the Commons and pursued an imperialist foreign policy. Born into the Jewish faith and later baptised, he had to contend with the marked antisemitism of the times.

December 20 ~  Born For Love Disraeli
"We are all b o r n for love . It is the p r i n c i p l e of existence, and it's o n l y end." ~ Benjamin Disraeli Born in London, England , Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, influenced British politics for over 30 years as its prime minister (1868 and 1874-1880), statesman, and author. "No government," he wrote, "can be long secure without a formidable opposition." Disraeli became the leader of the Tory protectionists in 1848. " Life is too short to be small," he said. In the midst of Victorianism, the statesman became England's first and only Jewish prime minister. He was a conservative who favored a political partnership with the working and middle classes. He also believed in preserving the monarchy. "The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches," he explained, "but reveal to them their own." He published his first novel, Vivian Grey , in 1826 and two political novels, Coningsby (1844) and Sybil "Nurture your mind with great thoughts , for you will never go any higher than you think," he said. Delighted by the blossom of the primrose, Disraeli would take Queen Victoria small bouquets. After his
