Dickinson, Emily (1830-1886)
page: Emily Dickinson's life has been traditionally viewed through her relationships with menher father, her brother, her mentor, and the unidentified man she addressed as "Master" in three love letters and a number of poems. However, in the last decade, critics have begun to recognize the importance of her relationships with women. Dickinson sent many more of her 1,776 poems to women than to men, particularly to her sister-in-law Susan ("Sue") Gilbert Dickinson who provided her with both a source of material and a faithful audience for a large portion of her writings. Sponsor Message.
Because the poet's first editors were anxious to conceal the erotic implications and the literary significance of this relationship, they minimized Sue's role, but recent critics have shown her to have been crucial to Dickinson's life and work. The poet was born December 10, 1830200 years after the first Dickinson arrived in Americato one of Amherst, Massachusetts's leading families. Her grandfather helped found Amherst Academy, and her father and brother, both lawyers, served it as treasurer after it became Amherst College. Dickinson attended the Academy for seven years and Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary for one, leaving early because she resisted its coercive religious environment and her parents wanted her at home.

DICKNSON@listserv.uta.edu is the address of the Emily Dickinson discussion list, an e-mail subscription list devoted to discussion of the work of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). The list is edited by Kristi Wilson of The University of Texas at Arlington. Connie Kirk and Jed Deppman serve as Advisory Editors. With about 200 subscribers, DICKNSON (founded in 1996) is open to anyone interested in Dickinson's writing. We discuss issues in recent scholarship, offer announcements of events and publications of interest, and discuss what draws us to the work of this poet. DICKNSON is a moderated list; all posts go first to the editor and then to the whole list if acceptable. Unacceptable mail will generally fall into three categories: "spam" (annoying useless junk); commercial messages (simple information about books in print is OK, though); and "flames" (personal attacks on other posters). Subscribers who post unacceptable mail are subject to immediate deletion from the list at the discretion of the editor and listowner. An archive for DICKNSON is available on-line.

Index Emily Dickinson is, in a sense, a link between her era and the literary sensitivities of the turn of the century. A radical individualist, she was born and spent her life in Amherst, Massachusetts, a small Calvinist village. She never married, and she led an unconventional life that was outwardly uneventful but was full of inner intensity. She loved nature and found deep inspiration in the birds, animals, plants, and changing seasons of the New England countryside. Dickinson spent the latter part of her life as a recluse, due to an extremely sensitive psyche and possibly to make time for writing (for stretches of time she wrote about one poem a day). Her day also included homemaking for her attorney father, a prominent figure in Amherst who became a member of Congress. Dickinson was not widely read, but knew the Bible, the works of

Emily Dickinson,"the belle of Amherst"(the Massachusetts town where she spent her entire life), is almost as famous for her mysteriously secluded life as for her poetry, which ranks her with Walt Whitman as one of the most gifted poets in American literature. She never married, and after age 30 she almost never saw anyone outside of her immediate family. Some scholars believe that this was her response to the narrow literary establishment of her time, which expected female writers to limit their subjects to the domestic and the sentimental. Author of over 1700 poems, only 10 were published in her lifetime, and these without her permission. After her death, however, her sister found and published the body of her work.

She gradually withdrew from the world and spent much of her life secluded in the family home. She helped with all the work of a large 19th-century household, rising before dawn every day to make the fires and prepare the family breakfast and looking after the conservatory and garden. With her sister Lavinia, she nursed their mother in her final illness. Did you know?
