Hans eget liv skildres med livlig fantasi i romanen "Little Dorrit". Charles Dickens
In 1853 schreef hij "Bleak House", gevolgd door "Little Dorrit" (1857), "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859) en "Great Expectations" (1861).

Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870)
Charles Dickens is much loved for his great contribution to classical English literature. He is the quintessential Victorian author: his epic stories, vivid characters and exhaustive depiction of contemporary life are unforgettable. His own story is one of rags to riches. He was born in Portsmouth on February 7, 1812, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. The good fortune of being sent to school at the age of nine was short-lived because his father, inspiration for the character of Mr Micawber in David Copperfield , was imprisoned for bad debt. The entire family, apart from Charles, were sent to Marshalsea along with their patriarch. Charles was sent to work in Warren's blacking factory and endured appalling conditions as well as loneliness and despair. After three years he was returned to school but the experience was never forgotten and became fictionalised in two of his better-known novels David Copperfield and Great Expectations Like many others, he began his literary career as a journalist. His own father became a reporter and Charles began with

Charles Dickens 1812 - 1870
On 7 February 1812 the great novelist Charles Dickens was born in a modest house in old Commercial Road, Portsmouth. His father John, a clerk in the Navy Pay Office, had brought his young bride Elizabeth down to Portsmouth in the summer of 1809 when they rented this house as the first home of their married life. The house now stands in a quiet cul-de-sac, but in 1812 when Charles was born it was the busy main road into the town. At the time the navy was still heavily involved in the Napoleonic wars with France. Trafalgar had been won in 1805, but Waterloo was still three years away. Later in the same year, the Dickens family moved to another address and left two years later for London. Although Charles Dickens was only associated with Portsmouth for a short time, the fame of his work meant that every attempt was made to locate the actual house of his birth and it was acquired by the Portsmouth Corporation in 1903 and turned into a museum. The house is displayed to re-create the type of lower middle class home of the era. The house is decorated in the Regency style appropriate to his parents and all the items on display are authentic.

Dickens is probably the best known and most popular of British 19th century novelists. This is due not only to the quality of his writing in itself but also to the widespread adaptation of his work for the stage and the screen, something already foreshadowed by Dickens' own highly successful second career as a public performer in recitals of readings from his own work, an activity that took him all over Britain and North America.
After a stormy childhood produced by his father's financial misadventures he began his writing career as a journalist and was a leading reporter of parliamentary debates but he soon achieved success also as a writer of short sketches and humorous short stories. Some of these were incorporated into later collections such as Sketches by Boz ( his pseudonym ) and The Pickwick Papers and their popularity and that of the many colourful, comic characters appearing in later novels have given him a wide reputation as a comic or, at least, a light-hearted writer. It has even been suggested that early books such as A Christmas Carol with its ghosts, family jollifications and its pantomime defeat of evil miserliness by goodwill, was a major factor in creating the modern English Christmas which is usually far more lavishly celebrated than in many other parts of Europe including Scotland.

Also Known As: BIOGRAPHY The best known, and arguably the best, of the English novelists of the Victorian era, Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Hampshire, very near to the south coast naval port of Portsmouth where his father John was a clerk in the navy pay office. Dickens' early life was marked by a certain poverty - although his father was well paid by the service, he seemed to have difficulty in managing the family accounts and was frequently in financial trouble. Dickens quickly picked up his studies and spent three years studying at Wellington House Academy in London before moving on to finish his studies at Mr Dawson's school in 1827. Following the end of his formal education, he spent a year working as a law office clerk in Grays Inn, near Chancery Lane, and as a shorthand reporter at Doctor's Commons. Still a keen student at the age of 18, Dickens took out a reader's ticket at the British Museum and voraciously consumed anything he could find there - Shakespeare, history, politics, current affairs - while continuing to impress his employers with his fast and accurate shorthand. He was soon earning a steady income and his attentions turned to writing, beginning with pieces published in
