PREFACE / ABSTRACT
Following is the first complete biographical account of professional whistler Alice Shaw , and the first to make use of nineteenth century newspaper accounts and other contemporary sources . Here for the first time are Alice's birth and death dates, the names of her family members, the circumstances of her divorce, the events and catalysts of her career, the true extent of her talent, and much more. It is the result of research which began in 2000, portions of which have already been published in the International Artwhistling Philharmonic Society's journal Siffleur (February 2003). The present writing has, thankfully, finally become the new basis of more factual news stories about Alice Shaw (see for example New York Daily News, story published 26 September 2004). This research was first inspired by claims I'd heard that Alice Shaw was the world's first professional whistler, the best whistler who ever lived, etc. Single-handedly responsible for all of these claims, it turned out, was a 1982 article about "Whistling Women," which contained an inspired, though (as the author duly cautioned) sketchy account of Alice Shaw, based primarily on an 1888 promotional poster. Nonetheless this deified Alice Shaw instantly amongst certain cirlces of whistling enthusiasts, who then spread the article's claims to reporters and others doing stories on whistling. Yet amazingly no one, neither journalists nor whistling enthusiasts, had ever taken the trouble to investigate Alice beyond that single article.

GALLERY 1 - FAMOUS PERSONS
Businessmen, Inventors, Scientists
Andrew Carnegie - American Industrialist (1835-1919)
He had only five years of formal schooling when he emigrated at age thirteen to the United States from Scotland. At age seventeen he began working for the Pennsyvania Railroad as a telegraph operator. Over the next fifty years he developed railroads and brought vertical integration to the iron and steel industry. He created a steel-making empire that became U.S. Steel after he sold it in 1901 to financier J.P. Morgan for in excess of $400,000,000. Always mindful of his humble beginnings, by the time he died in 1919 Carnegie had given away over $350,000,000 to provide free libraries, schools and colleges, and public parks. Claus Spreckels - Sugar Manufacturer (1828-1908)
Born in Germany, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1846 and in 1863 entered the sugar business, soon establishing a near monopoly in the manufacture and sale of sugar on the Pacific coast, becoming known as The Sugar King . He developed extensive sugar plantations in the Hawaiian Islands, then still a kingdom, and was a close friend and supporter of King Kalahaua. Spreckels was one of many German immigrant entrepreneurs such as Heinz, Gerber, Kraft, Fleischmann, Hershey, Schlitz, Miller, Blatz, and Busch who founded businesses that grew to become leaders in the food and beverage industries.
