About Kidlink

Empowering youth to build global networks of friends
Kidlink is a global, non commercial, virtual, user-owned organization based in Norway. Its goals are to empower kids and youth with free educational programs to give them better control over their lives, help them mature, get friends, create social networks, and collaborate with peers around the world individually or through their classrooms.
How Kidlink Works: A Brief Overview
All participating kids or students must register by answering four basic questions , and send them in. An automated response gets sent them.
Once a youth or a child is registered, they are eligible to take part in Kidlink's activities, be it discussions, educational offerings, or other activities. Participation in the Kidlink youth dialog is limited to youth through the secondary school level.
Kidlink's public mailing lists (Listserv) is the main means of communication. Participants are recommended to join each list individually. When someone posts to the mailing list a copy is sent to each member of that list, and it also becomes a part of the archives of the list so there is no need to keep all the emails one receives.

Internet Brings Canadian Aboriginal Culture To Classrooms Around the World
by Sonya Procenko
Children in classrooms around the world will soon be learning about their counterparts in Canada's aboriginal community by clicking on the Internet. Kidlink, one of the world's largest online communities for youth, plans to host Web pages featuring Canadian aboriginal cultures and languages. Reaching 175,000 people in 135 countries and 15 languages, Kidlink offers e-mail conferencing to students aged eight to 18 and their teachers. "(The aboriginal students) will have an audience of youth all over the world eager to learn about their culture,'' said Odd de Presno, Kidlink's founder and executive director. De Presno recently returned from Canada, where he met with members of the Assembly of First Nations. He also met with Industry Canada's SchoolNet which has agreed to co-operate with Kidlink. "The world is not CNN and Hollywood. There are 6,000 odd languages in the world with three languages dying every day. We have to support diversity and to do this we need to have diversity to show. Hopefully, we learn from each other and with a global network of youth, empower them.'' De Presno came up with the Kidlink idea back in 1989, inspired by a two-week Internet project linking 250 students in his country, Canada and the United States. He began planning a global network for children and teachers.

Canku Ota - A Newsletter Celebrating Native America
September 23, 2000 - Issue 19 Protecting U.S. Native Languages
Native Americans are invited to join K i d l i n k 's W h o A m I educational program in their languages. Out of 176 living languages listed, most are endangered, and spoken by less than 2 million American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts. The list includes famous names like Apache, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Comanche, Cree, Inuktitut, Mohawk, and Navaho. Jointly with Canku Ota (Many Paths), K i d l i n k proposes its eight-month, multilingual W h o A m I as a vehicle to protect United States' indigenous heritage. Key is the program's record of motivating children and youth to read and write in their own language. "To indigenous communities, it is a means to increase their youth's knowledge and appreciation of their area, people, language, culture, the way the society works, history," says Odd de Presno, K i d l i n k 's executive director. "It is also a means to communicate their culture to outsiders using their students as agents, supported by teachers." K i d l i n k is a non-profit grassroots organization providing free educational services to children and youth through the secondary school. Our work is supported by 79 public mailing lists for conferencing, a private network for Real-Time Interactions (like chats), an online art exhibition site, and some 500 volunteers living throughout the world. Most volunteers are teachers and parents. Since the start 10 years ago, over 175,000 kids from 137 countries on all continents have participated in our activities.
