Provenance
Letters purchased circa 1975 from unknown dealer. This collection represents only a minute part of the correspondence of the editors of St. Nicholas magazine. In 1914, 1915, and 1928, hundreds of letters from Scribner's and the Century Company's archives were auctioned off as collector's items. The majority of the existing St. Nicholas correspondence is now held at the New York Public Library. Columbia University and the Huntington Library hold sizable collections of the letters of Mary Mapes Dodge.
Restrictions
Non-circulating; available for research. Researchers should use the photocopies in Box 4 unless special permission is obtained from the curator.
Biographical Sketch Roswell Smith conceived of the idea for St. Nicholas in 1870 when he consulted the famous children's author Mary Mapes Dodge on her ideas about what a magazine for children should be. That same year Smith had co-founded Scribner's with Charles Scribner and Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland as a rival publication to the popular adult periodicals

Richard Davis
Richard Harding Davis was born on April 18th, 1864 in Philadelphia, the son of two writers. Richard attended both Lehigh and Johns Hopkins universities. He became a reporter in Philadelphia and later worked on the New York Evening Sun Davis' first job was as a reporter for the Philadelphia Press . In 1888 he moved to the New York Sun, and he was the managing editor of Harper's Weekly by the age of twenty-six. His stories and articles began attracting attention, and Gallegher and Other Stories , a collection of tales about a detective newsboy, was published in 1891. In 1896, William Randolph Hearst, owner and editor of the New York Journal , commissioned Davis and noted illustrator Frederick Remington to cover the Cuban rebellion against Spanish rule. Davis became the first modern war correspondent. While in Cuba, Davis wrote articles like The Death of Rodriguez , which described the execution of a young Cuban prisoner. This and other articles helped spark U.S. interest in the struggles of the Cuban people. In another article, Davis detailed the strip search of a young Cuban woman, but resigned when Hearst printed that the search had been conducted by male guards (Davis had, in fact, reported that the search had been done by females). Davis refused to work for Hearst after the incident. In 1898, Davis reported for the

War Correspondents With the Allies
The attitude of the newspaper reader toward the war correspondent who tries to supply him with war news has always puzzled me. One might be pardoned for suggesting that their interests are the same. If the correspondent is successful, the better service he renders the reader. The more he is permitted to see at the front, the more news he is allowed to cable home, the better satisfied should be the man who follows the war through the "extras." The explanation of the attitude of the "constant reader" to the reporters seems to be that he regards the correspondent as a prying busybody, as a sort of spy, and when he is snubbed and suppressed he feels he is properly punished. Perhaps the reader also resents the fact that while the correspondent goes abroad, he stops at home and receives the news at second hand. Possibly he envies the man who has a front seat and who tells him about it. And if you envy a man, when that man comes to grief it is only human nature to laugh.
