Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Old Soldier’s Story Richard Harding Davis Tries Soldiering A novelist and journalist of considerable ability, Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916), arguably the prototypical war correspondent, was the greatest American newspaperman of his times. By 1915 he had covered the Cuban Insurrection against Spain, the Graeco-Turkish War of 1897, the Spanish-American War, the South African War (from both sides), the Russo-Japanese War, and miscellaneous minor bloodlettings as well, occasionally getting into the action himself, as he always carried a revolver along with his pad and pencil. In Europe in August of 1914, Davis managed to spend some time with the French, the Belgians, and the Germans. Present when the Germans marched into Brussels, Davis’ accurate reporting on their atrocities – including the destruction of the Belgian city of Louvain – led to his arrest as a spy. Shortly released, Davis was expelled from the territory they controlled by the Germans, to return home. In the summer of 1915 Davis, although already over 50, joined the Plattsburg Movement, a private military training program that had sprung up spontaneously as a result of an increasing sense among many Americans that the nation had to prepare lest it be dragged into the world war.

Winston Churchill Leonard Wood John T. McCutcheon R. H. D. By GOUVERNEUR MORRIS "And they rise to their feet as He passes by, gentlemen unafraid." He was almost too good to be true. In addition, the gods loved him, and so he had to die young. Some people think that a man of fifty-two is middle-aged. But if R. H. D. had lived to be a hundred, he would never have grown old. It is not generally known that the name of his other brother was Peter Pan. Within the year we have played at pirates together, at the taking of sperm whales; and we have ransacked the Westchester Hills for gunsites against the Mexican invasion. And we have made lists of guns, and medicines, and tinned things, in case we should ever happen to go elephant-shooting in Africa. But we weren't going to hurt the elephants. Once R. H. D. shot a hippopotamus and he was always ashamed and sorry. I think he never killed anything else. He wasn't that kind of a sportsman. Of hunting, as of many other things, he has said the last word. Do you remember the Happy Hunting Ground in "The Bar Sinister"?—"where nobody hunts us, and there is nothing to hunt."
