ALPHONSE DAUDET
DAUDET, ALPHONSE Daudet wrote some charming stories for children, among which may be mentioned La Belle Nivernaise, the story of an old boat and her crew. His married lifehe married in 1867 Julia Allard seems to have been singularly happy. There was perfect intellectual harmony, and Madame Daudet herself possessed much of his literary gift; she is known by her Impressions de nature et dart (1879), LEnfance dune Parisienne (1883), and by some literary studies written under the pseudonym of Karl Steen. In his later years Daudet suffered from insomnia, failure of health and consequent use of chloral. He died in Paris on the 17th of December 1897. The story of Daudets earlier years is told in his brother Ernest Daudets Mon frre el moi. There is a good deal of autobiographical detail in Daudets Trente ans de Paris and Souvenirs dun homme de lettres, and also scattered in his other books. The references to him in the Journal des Goncourt are numerous. See also L. A. Daudet, Alphonse Daudet (1898), and biographical and critical essays b R. H. Sherard (1894); by A. Gerstmann (1883); by B. Diederic (1900); by A. Hermant (1903), and a bibliography by J. Brivois (1895); also The Works of Alphonse Daudet, translated by L. Ensor, H. Frith, E. Bartow (1902, etc.).

France - Alphonse Daudet's Mill
The photo shows the Alphonse Daudet's mill, located in Fontvieille, village near Arles , in the Rhone delta, in the South of France. Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) is a French writer, well known (among other works) for its compilation of short stories entitled "Letters from my Mill" he wrote in 1866. His other works are "The Little Thing" (1868), "Tartarin of Tarascon" (1872), "Tales of Monday" (1873), et "The Arlesian" (1872), play for which Bizet will compose the scene music. We reproduce below some extracts of the "Letters from my Mill" which describe more particularly this mill. "[It was] a windmill for flour, situated in the Rhone valley, in the heart of Provence, on a wooded slope, with pine trees and evergreen oaks. [...] All around the village, the hills were covered with windmills. Looking on the right and left hand sides, one could see nothing but wings veering thanks to mistral [...] and tramontane winds, which are God's breath. [...] All the week long, it was a delight to hear the sails flapping on the heights [... being surrounded by...] this good warm smell of crushed wheat which is such fragrant in the mills."
