Daudet wrote also under the influence of Zola such serious books as FROMONT JEUNE ET RISLER (1874), JACK (1876), and SAPHO (1884), which had connections to Alexandre Dumas ' (fils) The Lady of the Camillas In the middle of the room was an occasional table, on which stood a decanter of rum, a siphon of soda-water, a Turkish tobacco- pouch, "Captain Cook's Voyages," the Indian tales of Fenimore Cooper and Gustave Aimard, stories of hunting the bear, eagle, elephant, and so on, Lastly, beside the table sat a man of between forty and forty-five, short, stout, thick-set, ruddy, with flaming eyes and a strong stubbly beard ; he wore flannel tights, and was in his shirt sleeves; one hand held a hook, and the other brandished a very large pipe with an iron bowl-cap. Whilst reading heaven only knows what startling adventure of scalp- hunters, he pouted out his lower lip in a terrifying way, which gave the honest phiz of the man living placidly on his means the same impression of kindly ferocity which abounded throughout the house.
This man was Tartarin himself the Tartarin of Tarascon, the great, dreadnought, incomparable Tartarin of Tarascon.

ALPHONSE DAUDET
French author (1840-1897)
Biography:
Alphonse Daudet was born in Nimes in 1840. From the very beginning, his carreer as a writer was quite successful and prolific. He wrote his first novel at the age of 14. Women in Love (Les Amoureuses, 1857), his first published book, is a compilation of poems dedicated to Marie Rieu, his lover at that time. Letters from My Mill (Lettres de mon moulin, 1866), considered to be a French masterpieces, is composed by a group of delightful, Provence-inspired short stories. Le Petit Chose (1868) is a semiautobiographical novel touchingly descriptive of his life at boarding school and sometimes compared to Dickens ’s David Copperfield
His funniest and most read book appeared in 1871, under the title of Tartarin de Tarascon , a kind of parody of a Don Quixote of the French Midi. Two more books about this curious and loving character followed.
Daudet enjoyed for a few years prosperity and fame after the appearance of Fromont the Younger and Risler the Elder (1874), which won an award from the Académie Française. He died in Paris in 1897.

Daudet, Alphonse In the Land of Pain
Genre Memoir (87 pp.) Keywords Body Self-Image Disability History of Medicine Illness Narrative/Pathography ... Suffering Summary At some point Daudet began making notes for a book about his illness. He spoke to several of his contemporaries about this project, but the book never became more than a collection of brief notes, which were collected and published posthumously as "La Doulou" (Provencal for "pain"). This short book, translated here by Julian Barnes, consists of "fifty or so pages of notes on his symptoms and sufferings, his fears and reflections, and on the strange social life of patients at shower-bath and spa." (p. xiii) The notes are generally in chronological order, beginning with short comments like "Torture walking back from the baths via the Champs-Elysées" (p. 4) and "Also from that time onwards pins and needles in the feet, burning feelings, hypersensitivity." (p. 6) In a long section toward the end Daudet comments on his experience at Lamalou, a thermal spa that he visited annually from 1885 to 1893. "I've passed the stage where illness brings any advantage or helps you understand things; also the stage where it sours your life, puts a harshness in your voice, makes every cogwheel shriek." (p. 65)
