Charles Darwin (1809-1882):
The Descent of Man, 1871, excerpts on Sexual Selection
Sexual Selection has been treated at great length in this work; for, as I have attempted to show, it has played an important part in the history of the organic world. I am aware that much remains doubtful, but I have endeavoured to give a fair view of the whole case. In the lower divisions of the animal kingdom, Sexual Selection seems to have done nothing: such animals are often affixed for life to the same spot, or have the sexes combined in the same individual, or what is still more important, their perceptive and intellectual faculties are not sufficiently advanced to allow of the feelings of love and jealousy, or of the exertion of choice. When, however, we come to the Arthropoda and Vertebrata, even to the lowest classes in these two great Sub-Kingdoms, Sexual Selection has effected much. Sexual Selection depends on the success of certain individuals over others of the same sex, in relation to the propagation of the species; whilst Natural Selection depends on the success of both sexes, at all ages, in relation to the general conditions of life. The sexual struggle is of two kinds; in the one it is between the individuals of the same sex, generally the males. In order to drive away or kill their rivals, the females remaining passive; whilst in the other, the struggle is likewise between the individuals of the same sex, in order to excite or charm those of the opposite sex, generally the females, which no longer remain passive, but select the more agreeable partners. This latter kind of selection is closely analogous to that which man unintentionally, yet effectually, brings to bear on his domesticated productions, when he preserves during a long period the most pleasing or useful individuals, without any wish to modify the breed.

Charles Darwin understood better than anyone how his theory on the origin of new species threatened prevailing religious beliefs. He knew especially well how his ideas troubled his pious wife. (BB, 388) Darwin himself might well have spent his life quoting Genesis rather than studying speciation had it not been for his friendship with a professor of botany at Cambridge , John Stevens Henslow. Two years into his training for the Holy Orders, Darwin fell under the wing of Professor Henslow. Darwin In 1831, when Henslow received a call from Admiralty asking whom he could recommend as a naturalist on a voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle to map the South American coastline, he identified his favorite pupil. Darwin
Darwin Darwin England Darwin let his revolutionary work gather dust for fourteen years while he raised a family and tended to other scientific studies. (BB, 383-85) A letter from a young naturalist in 1858 finally spurred Darwin to publish his theory. The letter came from a friend of his, Alfred Russell Wallace.

    Darwin, Charles (1809-1882)

English naturalist who was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and father of physicist George Darwin . Darwin did poorly in school, and so could not secure employment following his graduation from divinity school. However, he was able to secure a position as ship's naturalist aboard the H. M.S. Beagle. The Beagle A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839). Darwin, reflecting on his observation, developed a theory of evolution. According to this theory, individual variability means that some organisms have a slight advantage over others. The advantage will allow the organisms to compete better in the "struggle for existence" and produced more offspring, which will inherit the advantageous qualities. The process whereby favorable traits in the most "fit" animals allow it to survive and reproduce, Darwin called "natural selection." He included the idea of "sexual selection" in his theory, stating that the struggle for possession of females will lead the most vigorous males producing the most progeny. Darwin was probably influenced in his formulation of evolution by the Uniformitarian views expressed in Lyell's Principles of Geology

Born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury as son of a physician he first studied medicine in Edinburgh and then theology. From 1831 to 1836 he participated in a circumnavigation of the earth on the 'Beagle', around Kap Hoorn to the Galapagos Islands, from there via Australia and South Africa back to Great Britain. After his return DARWIN lived on his estate in Down in the county of Kent, where he died on April 19, 1882. While Darwin became famous as a biologist re-founding evolutionary theory, he first dedicated himself to geology and on the occasion of the great earthquake in Chile on February 20, 1835, he wrote a plutonistic earthquake theory that is included in a forgotten treatise about the relation between volcanic phenomena and the elevations on the coast of South America. document last modified (mm/dd/yyyy):
