Charles Robert Darwin

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin, a naturalist, developed the theory of natural selection . He was born in Shrewsbury, England on Feb. 12, 1809. His father was also a naturalist and a physician. His mother died when he was eight. Darwin was the first of the evolutionary biologists . At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at University of Edinbourgh . However, he could not continue in the studies because the sight of surgery performed without anesthesia repelled him. Eventually, Darwin attended Cambridge University to study to become a clergyman. After he graduated, he went on a five-year scientific expedition to the pacific coast of South America on the H.M.S. Beagle from 1831 - 1836. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 describing evolution and natural selection and giving a theoretical explanation for the diversity among living and fossil beings. His book was not well received among the general population who felt threatened at the notion that humans were descended from ape-like creatures. The scientific community, however, did grasp his theories and today his book forms the basis for many contemporary archaeological theories. In 1839 he married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood. After this, he spent much of his spare time gardening and raising pigeons. Charles Darwin lived with his wife and children at their home on Downe, England. It is thought that he may have contracted some kind of illness during his travels in South America. He died on April 19, 1882 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.

Darwin, Charles Robert 1809-1882 C harles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, the grandson of Erasmus Darwin. His mother was a daughter of Josiah Wedgewood of the famous firm making distinguished china. Darwin was educated at Shrewsbury school under Samuel Butler and in 1825 he entered Endinburgh University to prepare for the medical profession. In 1828 he entered Cambridge University in the hope of becoming a clergyman. He took his degree in 1831. From December 1831 to October 1836 he sailed in H.M.S. "Beagle" as a naturalist. He visited many places including the Atlantic islands, South American Coast, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand and other islands. He also visited Brazil. In 1839 he married his cousin and moved in 1842 to Kent which was his home the rest of his life. In 1856 he started to write an explanation of his views but in June 1858 he received a manuscript from Alfred Henry Wallace in which he found a complete abstract of his own theory of natural selection. Wallace's essay and an abstract of Darwin's work was sent to the Linnean Society. The title of the joint communication was "On the Tendency of Species to Form Varieties: and on the Presentation of Varieties and Species by Natural Selection," (July 1, 1858).

I must begin with a good body of facts and not from a principle (in which I always suspect some fallacy) and then as much deduction as you please. The very essence of instinct is that it's followed independently of reason. "I have steadily endeavoured to keep my mind free so to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it." "Believing as I do that man in the distant future will be a far more perfect creature than he now is, it is an intolerable thought that he and all other sentient beings are doomed to complete annihilation after such long-continued slow progress."

Charles Darwin
Darwin, Charles Robert (1809-1882), English naturalist, author of the Origin of Species , was born at Shrewsbury on the 12th of February 1809. He was the younger of the two sons and the fourth child of Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, son of Dr. Erasmus Darwin. His mother, a daughter of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), died when Charles Darwin was eight years old. Charles Darwin’s elder brother, Erasmus Alvey (1804—1881), was interested in literature and art rather than science: on the subject of the wide difference between the brothers Charles wrote that he was “inclined to agree with Francis Galton in believing that education and environment produce only a small effect on the mind of anyone, and that most of our qualities are innate” ( Life and Letters , London, 1887). Darwin considered that his own success was chiefly due to “the love of science, unbounded patience in long reflecting over any subject, industry in observing and collecting facts, and a fair share of invention as well as of common sense “. He also says: “I have steadily endeavored to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it“. The essential causes of his success are to be found in this latter sentence, the creative genius ever inspired by existing knowledge to build, hypotheses by whose aid further knowledge could be won, the calm unbiased mind, the transparent honesty and love of truth which enabled him to abandon or to modify his own creations when they ceased to be supported by observation.

His parents were Unitarians and worshipped at the High Street Unitarian Church where there is a commemorative tablet to Charles, even though he was baptised at St. Chad's Church. He was educated at home initially and then at a day school kept by the Rev. Case at 13 Claremont Hill. In 1818 Charles was sent as a boarder to Shrewsbury School then in the original building at Castle Gates, where conditions for the boys were decidedly austere. The building now houses Shrewsbury Library and has been restored to its Elizabethan splendour. At the front entrance is an imposing statue of Darwin erected in 1897. An interesting account of his schooldays appeared in The life and letters of Charles Darwin (1887) edited by his son, Francis.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity Charles Robert Darwin was born on 9 February, 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. He abandoned medical studies in after two years in Edinburgh, but not before friends interested him in geology, in marine wildlife, and in Lamarckian evolutionary zoology. He trained half-heartedly for Anglican ordination in Christ's College, Cambridge, taking a poor degree in , but other friends had by then helped him set his professional sights on geology and natural history, one of them even arranging a volunteer naturalist's berth for him on the Admiralty survey vessel HMS Beagle. Darwin's five years aboard that ship, exploring the Pacific coast of South America, shaped his critical sense that species were a natural record of change, not stasis. He developed the twin notions of geological and biological mutability for which he is famous over the rest of his life. He wrote prolifically from his study in a quiet London suburb, being debarred from a conventional academic life by chronic ill health, possibly due to an infection contracted on his voyage. He died on 19 April, 1882

Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
From a young age Charles Darwin disliked school and instead he liked observing birds and collecting insects to study. When he was 16 years old, Darwin was sent to a medical school in Scotland, which he found as a waste of time. In 1827, Darwin enrolled in the University of Cambridge, England. He also though that his time was wasted there too, as far as academic studies were concerned. Henslow, a professor of botany in Cambridge and Darwin’s friend, encouraged Darwin in his studies of natural history. In 1831 Henslow recommended that Darwin be chosen for the position of naturalist on the ship the HMS Beagle.
For Darwin, the Beagle was chartered for a five-year mapping and collecting expedition to South America and the South Pacific. Darwin read a geology book given to him by Henslow, called “Principles of Geology,” by Charles Lyell. After collecting fossils in the Andes, observing results of earthquake in Chile, and studying thousands of different species, he came up with the conclusion that new new kinds of living organisms form every time land changes.
When Darwin returned to England in October 1836, his collections from the voyage were praised by the scientific community. Observing similarities between different and fossils, Charles Darwin came up the idea that species could have common ancestors. Comparing homologous str...

Print Preview of Section Darwin, Charles Robert (1809-1882), British scientist, who laid the foundation of modern evolutionary theory with his concept of the development of all forms of life through the slow-working process of natural selection . His work was of major influence on the life and earth sciences and on modern thought in general. Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on February 12, 1809, Darwin was the fifth child of a wealthy and sophisticated English family. His maternal grandfather was the successful china and pottery entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood; his paternal grandfather was the well-known 18th-century physician and savant Erasmus Darwin. After graduating from the elite school at Shrewsbury in 1825, young Darwin went to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. In 1827 he dropped out of medical school and entered the University of Cambridge, in preparation for becoming a clergyman of the Church of England. There he met two stellar figures: Adam Sedgwick, a geologist, and John Stevens Henslow, a naturalist. Henslow not only helped build Darwin’s self-confidence but also taught his student to be a meticulous and painstaking observer of natural phenomena and collector of specimens. After graduating from Cambridge in 1831, the 22-year-old Darwin was taken aboard the English survey ship HMS

British naturalist who revolutionized biology with his theory of evolution through natural selection. He also speculated, in a letter to the botanist Joseph Hooker (1871), on the possibility of a chemical origin for life: Recognizing, however, that the science of his time was not yet ready for such a concept, he added: It is mere rubbish thinking at present of the origin of life; one might as well think of the origin of matter. Charles Darwin was the official naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle during its world voyage of 1831-36. His observations during the journey led to the development of his theory of evolution. In 1858 he published his ideas of natural selection, and a year later he defined his theories in his Origin of the Species . Darwin's theories started a controversy that continues to this day. Although he was a religious man himself and once considered a career in the church, his theory of evolution is considered by some to be contrary to biblical teachings and therefore destructive to religion. Darwin was born on the same day as U.S. president
