One must wonder, does Urbanowicz have any other interests? (Yes, he does .) The first Darwin presentation in a somewhat similar format was made at an Anthropology Forum on October 4, 1990. On February 10, 1993, a live closed-circuit televised production of Darwin was broadcast throughout Northern California for an Anthropology 103 course (followed by another Anthropology Forum on February 11). An additional Darwin presentation was made for new students at California State University, Chico, during "Orientation Week" on August 25, 1994 and on September 15, 1994, a "Darwin Presentation" (entitled "Evolution: Charles Darwin And Anthropology") was presented at an Anthropology Forum that date. Darwin's ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES BY MEANS OF NATURAL SELECTION, OR THE PRESERVATION OF FAVORED RACES IN THE STRUGGLE OF LIFE, was published on November 24, 1859, and sold out immediately. It was followed by five more editions in his lifetime. The expression "survival of the fittest" did not originate from Darwin's work. Herbert Spencer had already used it in his books about evolutionary philosophy. Though he later described our common ancestor as "a hairy quadruped, furnished with a tail and pointed ears," Darwin did not do so in the famous On the Origin of Species "The presence of a body of well-instructed men, who have not to labor for their daily bread, is important to a degree which cannot be overestimated; as all high intellectual work is carried on by them, and on such work material progress of all kinds mainly depends, not to mention other and higher advantages." Biography of Charles Robert Darwin
(From: Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th Edition, 1910-1911) DARWIN, CHARLES ROBERT (1809-1882), English naturalist, author of the Origin of Species , was born at Shrewsbury on the 12th of February 1809. He was the younger of the two sons and the fourth child of Dr Robert Waring Darwin, son of Dr Erasmus Darwin (q.v.). His mother, a daughter of Josiah Wedgwood (1730- 1795), died when Charles Darwin was eight- years old. Charles Darwin's elder brother, Erasmus Alvey (1804-1881), was interested in literature and art rather than science: on the subject of the wide difference between the brothers Charles wrote that he was "inclined to agree with Francis Galton in believing that education and environment produce only a small effect on the mind of anyone, and that most of our qualities are innate" ( Life and Letters , London, 1887, p. 22). Darwin considered that his own success was chiefly due to "the love of science, unbounded patience in long reflecting over any subject, industry in observing and collecting facts, and a fair share of invention as well as of common sense" (

Charles Darwin, 1809-1882
Charles Darwin, the discoverer of natural selection, was born at Shrewsbury. His grandfather was Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802, physician, radical, freethinker), his father Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, F.R.S. (1766-1848), and his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgewood (1730-1795). After five years at Shrewsbury grammar school, Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University (1825-27) and then, with a view to the Church, entered Christ's College, Cambridge (1828). Even before he went to Cambridge, the young Darwin took numerous natural history excursions and delivered his first scientific paper. It was at Cambridge that his biological studies began in earnest. He became acquainted with Professor Henslow who encouraged his interest in zoology and geology. In 1831 Darwin received his B.A. and shortly afterwards was recommended by Henslow as naturalist aboard the H. M. S. Beagle , then about to begin a scientific survey of South American waters. Darwin sailed on 27 December 1831 and did not return to England until 2 October 1836. He visited Tenerife, the Cape Verde Islands, Brazil, Montevideo, Tierra del Fuego, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Chile, the Galapagos, Tahiti, New Zealand, Tasmania and the Keeling Islands. It was during this lengthy voyage that Darwin obtained an intimate knowledge of the flora, fauna, and geology of these distinct areas. By 1846 he had published several works on the geological and zoological discoveries of his voyage works that placed him in the front rank of mid-19th century scientists.

Darwin's On The Origin Of Species By Means Of Natural Selection, Or The Preservation Of Favoured Races In The Struggle Of Life , was published on November 24, 1859, and sold out immediately.
Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809. In 1827 he started theology studies at Christ's College, Cambridge. His love to collect plants, insects, and geological specimens was noted by his botany professor John Stevens Henslow. He arranged for his talented student a place a on the surveying expedition of HMS Beagle to Patagonia. Despite the objections of his father, Darwin decided to leave his familiar surroundings.
The voyage took five years from 1831 to 1836. Darwin returned with observations he had made in Teneriffe, the Cape Verde Islands, Brazil, the Galapagos Islands, and elsewhere. During the voyage he had contracted a tropical illness, which made him a semi-invalid for the rest of his life. By 1846 Darwin had published several works based on the discoveries of the voyage and he became secretary of the Geological Society (1838-41).
From 1842 Darwin lived at Down House, Downe. In 1839 he had married his cousin Emma Wedgwood, and when not devoting himself to scientific studies, he led the life of a country gentleman. In the 1840s Darwin worked on his observations of the origin of species for his own use. He began to conclude, although he was deeply anxious about the direction his mind was taking, that species might share a common ancestor.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) gentleman naturalist
Few Victorians are as well-remembered today as Charles Robert Darwin. Born into a wealthy Shropshire gentry family , Darwin grew up amidst wealth, comfort and country sports. An unimpressive student, Darwin vacillated between the prospect of becoming a country physician, like his father, or a clergyman. The advantage to becoming a country parson, as Darwin saw it, would be the freedom to pursue his growing interest in natural history. However, an unforeseen opportunity precluded these early plans. After his student days in Edinburgh and Christ's College Cambridge Darwin's connections in 1831 offered him the opportunity of travelling on a survey ship, H.M.S. Beagle , as naturalist and the captain's gentleman dining companion. The round-the-world journey lasted almost five years. Darwin spent most of these years investigating the geology and life of the lands he visited, especially South America, the Galapagos islands, and pacific coral islands. Darwin also read the works of men of science like Alexander von Humboldt and the geologist Charles Lyell. Lyell's new book

Thus disbelief crept over me at a very slow rate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that I felt no distress, and have never since doubted even for a single second that my conclusion was correct. I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true ; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother and almost all my best friends, will be everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine. Although I did not think much about the existence of a personal God until a considerably later period of my life, I will here give the vague conclusions to which I have been driven. The old argument of design in nature, as given by Paley, which formerly seemed to me so conclusive, fails, now that the law of natural selection has been discovered. We can no longer argue that, for instance, the beautiful hinge of a bivalve shell must have been made by an intelligent being, like the hinge of a door by man. There seems to be no more design in the variability of organic beings and in the action of natural selection, than in the course which the wind blows. Everything in nature is the result of fixed laws.

Synopsis
THE DESCENT OF MAN (1871) looks at the emergence of humans in terms of primate evolution. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) focuses on the origin and history of our own species, claiming that humans are closest in ancestry to African chimpanzees and gorillas. Darwin presents a strictly mechanistic and materialistic interpretation of the human animal that is free from superstition and spiritualism.
