Darwin, Charles (1809-1882)

English naturalist who was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and father of physicist George Darwin . Darwin did poorly in school, and so could not secure employment following his graduation from divinity school. However, he was able to secure a position as ship's naturalist aboard the H. M.S. Beagle. The Beagle A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839). Darwin, reflecting on his observation, developed a theory of evolution. According to this theory, individual variability means that some organisms have a slight advantage over others. The advantage will allow the organisms to compete better in the "struggle for existence" and produced more offspring, which will inherit the advantageous qualities. The process whereby favorable traits in the most "fit" animals allow it to survive and reproduce, Darwin called "natural selection." He included the idea of "sexual selection" in his theory, stating that the struggle for possession of females will lead the most vigorous males producing the most progeny. Darwin was probably influenced in his formulation of evolution by the Uniformitarian views expressed in Lyell's Principles of Geology

Darwin has become iconic in the 1990s. Look at the press coverage of 'Darwinian Fundamentalism', 'Evolutionary Psychology' and 'Selfish Genes'. As a result we see him bestriding the Victorian era like a giant. Yet his was a distant century, the 'Wonderful Century' - no less wonderful for its intellectual than its technological feats. His workhouse age was very different from our secular, deregulated world founded on naturalistic principles and fast information exchange. Only recently has Darwin's evolution in its Dickensian setting become well understood, thanks to a labour-intensive 'Darwin Industry'. Teams of international scholars in the 1980s cracked Darwin's dogged path to natural selection; textual exegetes painstakingly transcribed his hieroglyphic notebooks, while contextual analysts plumbed his cultural assumptions. As a result, today we have a much deeper understanding of the troubled evolutionist in his milieu. Even so, the findings have sometimes been surprising. Darwin's theory of evolution was published in the Origin of Species in 1859. As its implications sank in, late Victorians saw the 'very foundations of human thought' being relaid, affecting 'the entire intellectual life of our Western civilisation'. Darwin had predicted no less in his clandestine evolution notebooks.

Few Victorians are as well-remembered today as Charles Robert Darwin. Born into a wealthy Shropshire gentry family, Darwin grew up amidst wealth, comfort and country sports. An unimpressive student, Darwin vacillated between the prospect of becoming a country physician, like his father, or a clergyman. The advantage to becoming a country parson, as Darwin saw it, would be the freedom to pursue his growing interest in natural history. However, an unforeseen opportunity precluded Darwin's plan of becoming a clergyman. After his student days in Edinburgh and Cambridge , Darwin's connections in 1831 offered him the opportunity of travelling on a survey ship, H.M.S. Beagle, as the captain's gentleman dining companion and as naturalist. The round-the-world journey lasted almost five years. Darwin spent most of these years investigating the geology and life of the lands he visited, especially South America, the Galapagos islands, and pacific coral reefs. Darwin also read the works of men of science like Alexander von Humboldt and the geologist Charles Lyell . Lyell's new book

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an an English naturalist whose theory of evolution is one of the greatest contributions ever made to science. Darwin stated this theory in his book The Origin of Species (1859). In another book called The Descent of Man (1871 ) he applied his theory to the evolution of man from a primitive monkey-like animal. Both books aroused world-wide controversy. Many considered them to be offensive, atheistic, blasphemous and Darwin's caricatures were published in magazines. Although later research has modified or disproved some of Darwin's findings, scientists still accept his basic ideas.
Darwin was born in Shrewsbury and his father was a physician. As a youth Darwin was interested in all living things. He read all the books on geology and biology he could find and collected plant and animal specimens, including fossils. In 1825 he began medical studies at the University of Edinburgh but gave them up after two years. In 1828 he entered Cambridge University to study theology getting a degree in 1831. He eventually obtained a post as unpaid naturalist aboard the surveying ship H.M.S. Beagle. In 1831 the Beagle left on a five-year voyage to South American and Australian waters. During this time Darwin observed and studied in many remote regions of the world. He collected great numbers of plant and animal specimens. From detailed notes of his observations he began to develop the theory that was to make him famous. When he returned to England Darwin began studying and investigating nature. In 1844 Darwin began to compile his greatest contribution
