Jennifer Strange
An Artist's Journey through the
"Divine Comedy"
In 1994 I began a journey into a strange wood that would forever change my life. It has been a journey that has led my mind and heart along a path of suffering and pain to eventual hope and joy. So many others have taken this very journey. Our guide has been the 14th century poet Dante Alighieri, who through his poem, "The Divine Comedy," describes his own pilgrimage through hell, purgatory and paradise.
Our journey leads us to meet souls who are subject to eternal damnation and torture in hell, like those in the "Wood of the Suicide" where souls, having denied themselves their body while living, fall to hell and take the form of gnarled, twisted trees.
Enter The Wood of the Suicide

Meet the souls on the Mountain of Purgatory...
Il Purgatorio "The Proud" Canto X, July, 1995
"O you proud Christians, wretched souls and small,
who by the dim light of your twisted minds
believe you prosper even as you fall .."
True, those who crawled along that painful track

27. Ron Dante
Interview with Jay S. Jacobs about a long career singing and producing pop music.

It's all the entertainment you need! FEATURE STORIES MOVIE REVIEWS MUSIC REVIEWS BOX SET REVIEWS ... AVAILABLE IN BOOK STORES EVERYWHERE! Ron Dante by Jay S. Jacobs Let me know a bit about how you got started in music. "I grew up in a singing type of family. My dad sang all over the place. His brother sang, you know, just for their own enjoyment… at weddings and things. But there was a lot of singing going on in our home. My dad was a big pop music fan. He had all the latest 78s of the hit records of the fifties. So I would listen to all of his records and see him enjoying it and I think I just naturally gravitated to singing. When I was about eleven, I broke my arm, and I needed an exercise for my wrist. The doctor recommended a guitar, because I was a big Elvis fan. I started to play, and before you knew it I was singing with my guitar and writing songs." Your first hit was "Leader of the Laundromat," a parody of the girl-group classic "Leader of the Pack," which you did with a band you called the Detergents. How did that come about? "Two of my friends, Danny Jordan and Tommy Wynn, we were all staff writers at Don Kirshner’s publishing company. Danny’s uncle was a guy named Paul Vance, who was a very successful songwriter in the fifties and sixties. He wrote ‘Catch a Falling Star" for Perry Como. He wrote "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" for Brian Hyland. He was very talented. He came up with this idea to do a parody of ‘Leader of the Pack.’ He asked Danny to bring in a couple of friends. Danny and I blew on over and we ended up singing on this parody. It became a career for a couple of years. We went out and toured on the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars singing ‘Leader of the Laundromat.’"

It was a great action/disaster movie with lots of interesting sequences, riveting special effects, and likeable characters. Afterwards, the movie left my mind completely. It didn't resonate with any interesting themes or ideas; it was just a story, and it was done. But really, what else could anyone ask from an action movie? The effects-laden previews made this movie look like Twister, which I did not like. Many critics have called the two movies similar. Roger Ebert even outlines the "rules" for such disaster movies in his review. But I disagree that adherence to the genre necessarily makes a sub-par movie. Some formula movies work and others don't. Dante's Peak works.

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) Drei Frau'n umringten meines Herzens Pforte
    Und lagerten sich hin,
    Denn Minne thront darin,
Sie, die Gebieterin ob meinem Leben. -
Sie sind so schön und aller Tugend Horte,
Daß sie - die voller Macht
    In meinem Herzen wacht -
Sich kaum getraut, ihnen das Wort zu geben.
Und jede scheint vor Weh und Angst zu beben:
So weiß sich ein Vertriebner kaum zu fassen,
Den alle Welt verlassen. Was nützt der edlen Tugend hehres Kleid?

    What is Dante?
Dante is a circuit-level firewall/proxy that can be used to provide convenient and secure network connectivity to a wide range of hosts while requiring only the server Dante runs on to have external network connectivity. Once installed, Dante can in most cases be made transparent to the clients while offering detailed access control and logging facilities to the server administrator. Developed by Inferno Nettverk A/S, Dante usually comes installed as part of a bigger Inferno Nettverk firewall system. Inferno Nettverk has however decided to also offer it separately available via FTP . The Dante version provided via FTP is under a BSD/CMU-type license and comes with complete source code, for your convenience and verification. Inferno Nettverk also provides commercial services related to Dante. These services include support, customised installations/tuning of Dante, development, porting and embedding. For more information about support, see the Dante support page or contact sales@inet.no
