In Search of Sea Shanties, Work Songs of The Sea
This month's edition ( March, 2001 ) gave us a sampling of some American as well as European popular songs about the sea, boats and ships. Those songs represent popular composer's imagination and visions of the sea and its attraction. In our continuing search for the origins of American popular music, a look at the original songs of the sea will give us some insight into one category of traditional or folk song that has had a significant effect on popular music; the work song and more specifically for this month, the sea shanty. Work songs were/are folk songs sung by laborers, usually to accompany the work they are performing. I think we can all relate to the idea of "whistle while you work". The work song is the vocal equivalent and the documented work song tradition goes back at least to the 18th century and probably well beyond. Of all the categories of work songs, perhaps none are as well known and colorful as the sea shanty. The English language sea shanty flourished from around 1810 to the end of the 19th century. Despite the primary period of popularity, shanties continued to be used well into the 20th century and there are documented examples of shanties from as early as the 15th century. The rise of the sea shanty coincided with the end of the War of 1812 with the reinvigoration of the British and growth of the American merchant marine services. The rapid expansion of the American merchant marine presented a challenge to the previously dominant British trade. Prior to then, the lack of competition resulted in a rather leisurely pace of operation. During those years (pre 1815), singing was even prohibited on British ships.

Dana Point
Incorporated in 1989, Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast (1840). In his journal, Dana documents his voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California on the merchant ship, Pilgrim. Therein, Dana describes the area once known as Capistrano Bay, as "the most romantic spot on the California coast." Today, Capistrano Bay is known as Dana Point
Dana Point is home to 36,850 residents and is characterized by nearly seven miles of prominent coastal bluffs and cascading hills along the Pacific Ocean. Most noteworthy of these bluffs is a unique promontory known as the "Headlands" which overlooks Dana Point Harbor. One of the most significant man-made alterations of the Orange
County coastline.
Dana Point Harbor provides slips and mooring for over 2,500 boats along with over 50 specialty shops and restaurants. The Harbor attracts thousands of people annually for shopping, sport fishing, walking, bicycling, parasailing and a host of recreational
activities. The Dana Point Harbor is also considered to be the gateway to Doheny State Park, one of California’s most popular beaches. The 62-acre State Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming, surfing, bicycling, tide pool exploration and more.

Historical note:
Elisha Reynolds Potter, Jr. was born at Kingston, Rhode Island on June 20, 1811, the son of Elisha Reynolds Potter, Sr. and Mary (Mawney) Potter. His father was a well-known lawyer, member of the Rhode Island General Assembly, and U.S. Representative. Elisha Jr. attended Kingston Academy in his youth and graduated from Harvard University in 1830. He was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1832; he also became a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society that year. He was the Society's vice president from 1850 to 1855. Potter spent time in Washington during the early 1830s, when he was in his early 20s, observing the activities and dynamics of the United States Congress. His astute, humorous and sometimes fascinating observations can be found in correspondence he sent to his father during this period (see subgroup 2). By the mid-1830s he was corresponding regularly with Dutee J. Pearce and John Brown Francis, associates of his father. Letters to Elisha from this period suggest he may have exercised an influence over the political conduct of both his father and Governor Francis well in advance of his years. In addition to politics, Potter's attention was focused on the study and practice of agriculture and history. While still a young adult, Potter was writing a history of southern Rhode Island. His
