Here, at anchor [at the Yerba Buena anchorage in San Francisco Bay] and the only vessel, was a brig with Russian colors, from Asitka, in Russian America... Though no larger than the Pilgrim , she had five or six officers, and a crew of between twenty and thirty; and such a stupid and greasy-looking set, I certainly never saw before.... They had brutish faces, looked like the antipodes of sailors, and apparently dealt in nothing but grease. They lived upon grease; ate it, drank it, slept in the midst of it, and their clothes were covered with it. To a Russian, grease is the greatest luxury. They looked with greedy eyes upon the tallow-bags as they were taken in to the vessel, and, no doubt, would have eaten one up whole, had not the officer kept watch over it. The grease seemed actually coming through their pores, and out in their hair, and on their faces. It seems as if it were this saturation which makes them stand cold and rain so well. If they were to go into a warm climate, they would all die of scurvy. Richard Henry Dana

replica of the ship Pilgrim at Dana Point, CA His adventures, published in 1840 under the title Two Years Before the Mast One hundred sixty years later, Two Years Before the Mast Aboard ship, Dana discovers that to sail is to tread the line between life and death. As early as Chapter 6, the crew experiences the loss of a crew member overboard. Later, Dana comments on the casual way crew members reach out for one another in times of foot slips and lost grips, shaking off the temptation to express their fear or react to the surge of adrenaline that may have saved their lives. Dana returned to Boston, graduated from Harvard with the class of 1837, entered law school and wrote Two Years Before the Mast from memory, a small notebook and letters home, for his journal disappeared along with his sea chest when he disembarked in Boston Harbor in 1836. In his work as an attorney, he became a prominent authority on admiralty and international law. Keepers of the good ship Pilgrim, Dana Point

    RICHARD HENRY DANA, JR., 1815-1882
"Biographical Note" "Two years before the mast were but an episode in the life of Richard Henry Dana, Jr.; yet the narrative in which he details the experiences of that period is, perhaps, his chief claim to a wide remembrance. His services in other than literary fields occupied the greater part of his life, but they brought him comparatively small recognition and many disappointments. His happiest associations were literary, his pleasantest acquaintanceships those which arose through his fame as the author of one book. The story of his life is one of honest and competent effort, of sincere purpose, of many thwarted hopes. The traditions of his family forced him into a profession for which he was intellectually but not temperamentally fitted: he should have been a scholar, teacher, and author; instead he became a lawyer. "Born in Cambridge, Mass., August 1, 1815, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., came of a line of Colonial ancestors whose legal understanding and patriotic zeal had won them distinction. His father, if possessed of less vigor than his predecessors, was yet a man of culture and ability. He was widely known as poet, critic, and lecturer; and endowed his son with native qualities of intelligence, good breeding, and honesty. "After somewhat varied and troublous school days, young Dana entered Harvard University, where he took high rank in his classes and bid fair to make a reputation as a scholar. But at the beginning of his third year of college a severe attack of measles interrupted his course, and so affected his eyes as to preclude, for a time at least, all idea of study. The state of the family finances was not such as to permit of foreign travel in search of health. Accordingly, prompted by necessity and by a youthful love of adventure, he shipped as a common sailor in the brig, Pilgrim, bound for the California coast. His term of service lasted a trifle over two years — from August, 1834, to September, 1836. The undertaking was one calculated to kill or cure. Fortunately it had the latter effect; and, upon returning to his native place, physically vigorous but intellectually starved, he reentered Harvard and worked with such enthusiasm as to graduate in six months with honor.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THE MAST
    PERSONAL NARRATIVES
Accounts of sea voyages often have elements of personal narration. William Dampier's and George Shelvocke's accounts of their voyages, for example, are written from idiosyncratic, individual points of view, which make their reports highly readable. Personal narratives, however, may be distinguished from voyage accounts in that the voyage account is primarily a record of travel, while the personal narrative, although detailing the events of one or more voyages, is concerned primarily with the life of the individual relating the story. The personal narrative of voyage experiences achieved a high form in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While some narratives include dramatic tales of adventure that seem to border on fiction, the personal narrative was particularly valued for its authenticity and reliability, which is what brought Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast such wide acclaim. The sources for these personal accounts were travel diaries, ships logs, and manuscript memoirs. Nathaniel Uring.

Richard Henry Dana The hide and tallow trade was important not only for its immediate economic effects but also because the writings of men engaged in the trade greatly heightened American interest in California. On board the ship Pilgrim in 1835 was a young Bostonian named Richard Henry Dana. For eighteen months, Dana and his shipmates collected hides along the California coast. He also made close observations of California's land and people. (DETAIL)- Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882). Two Years Before the Mast: A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea When Dana returned to New England, he published his recollections in Two Years Before the Mast (1840). He described for his countrymen in precise detail the beauties of the California landscape, its capacious harbors, abundant wildlife, and salubrious climate "than which there can be no better in the world." He was contemptuous of the Californios , "an idle thriftless people" who could "make nothing for themselves." He was amazed that they bought "bad wine made in Boston and brought round by us" when their own country abounded in grapes. "In the hands of an enterprising people," he concluded, "what a country this might be!"
