Robert Bontine , the son of Major William Bontine of the Scots Greys, was born on 24th May 1852. His mother was the daughter of Admiral Charles Elphinstone Fleming. Robert spent most of his childhood on the family estate in Perthshire. After being educated at Harrow Robert moved to Argentina where his family owned a cattle ranch.
After the death of his father in 1883 he changed his name to Robert Cunninghame Graham. He returned to England and became interested in politics. He attended socialist meetings where he heard and met William Morris George Bernard Shaw H. M. Hyndman Keir Hardie and John Burns . Graham was converted to socialism and he began to speak at public meetings. He was an impressive orator and was especially good at dealing with hecklers.

Cunninghame Graham still cutting an impressive figure at the age of 80 Assaulting policemen notwithstanding, he was possessed of a compassionate nature and always tended to champion the underdog. It was no surprise therefore when he was soon converted to socialism and, along with Keir Hardie, founded the Scottish Labour Party, becoming its first president in 1888. During his time as an MP he visited Ireland where he was entranced by the Irish Statesman, Parnell. The Irish were similarly entranced by this dashing Scotsman and when Parnell died in 1891, Cunninghame Graham was the only non-Irish MP to attend his funeral. He retired as an MP in 1892.

Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham
Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham was born on 24th May 1852 in London where his father Major William Bontine was serving with the Scots Greys. By the time he died in Buenos Aires in 1936, Graham had travelled extensively in Europe, North and South Africa, and North and South America, gaining for himself the deserved reputation as a cultured, cosmopolitan hispanophile. However, by heritage, upbringing and temperament, he was Scotissimus Scotorum , and part of a complex genealogical tree that saw amongst his forebears many of the famous Grahams of Scottish history. An inveterate letter-writer in his early travel adventures in Latin America, he began his literary life after the demise of his political career as a Radical MP (1886-92). Although Don Roberto , as his friends called him, is perhaps best known to many as a traveller and adventurer, a character, even an eccentric, he has left behind a solid corpus of some thirty books of sketches, biographies, histories and travel literature, not to mention translations, prefaces, pamphlets and other miscellaneous works. When he did come to write his first work he treated matters close to home.
