Born London England 23 September 1873 Died Killed In Action, Hill 70, France 18 August 1917 Age Personal Married to Louise Hobson Storekeeper in Galt Ontario Regimental Number Original Enlistment 20th Battalion, 10 November 1914 Served in France 15 September 1915 to 18 August 1918 Wounded at the Somme 16 September 1916 Citation During a strong enemy counter-attack, a Lewis gun in a forward post in a communication trench leading to the enemy lines was buried by a shell, and the crew, with the exception of one man, killed. Serjt . Hobson, though not a gunner, grasping the great importance of the post, rushed from his trench, dug out the gun, and got it into action against the enemy who were now advancing down the trench and across the open. A jam caused the gun to stop firing. Though wounded, he left the gunner to correct the stoppage, rushed forward at the advancing enemy and, with bayonet and clubbed rifle, single-handed, held them back until he himself was killed by a rifle shot. By this time however, the Lewis gun was again in action and reinforcements shortly afterwards arriving, the enemy were beaten off. The valour and devotion to duty displayed by this non-commissioned officer gave the gunner the time required to again get the gun into action, and saved a most serious situation.

Victoria Crosses 635 Private Samuel Parkes, V.C. Born in WinningtonTamworth, Staffordshire, in 1813 the son of Thomas and Lydia Parkes, Samuel was baptised at St Ethrida’s Church, Tamworth on 24th December 1815. Parkes enlisted into the 4th Queen's Own Light Dragoons at his home town on 28th July 1831, when he was described as aged 18, 6 feet 2 inches tall with light brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. Prior to military service, he was described as being a labourer. He served with the Regiment in India for 9 years and 5 months, leaving Bombay on 28th December 1841. Three months later, he disembarked from the "Repulse" with the Regiment on its way to quarters in Canterbury. Their red uniforms were replaced with blue ones in 1842, and it was in this uniform that the Regiment marched to South and West Wales to keep civil order during the so-called "Rebecca Riots". The turnpike roads which commanded a toll were deeply unpopular, and an organisation known as "Rebecca and her daughters" grew up. Disguised in women's clothing, they preached violence, creating unrest by destroying buildings and tool gates. One of the Troops was thanked by the Duke of Wellington for saving the workhouse at Carmarthen. After service in Ireland, once again keeping civil Order. On 25th October 1854 at Balaklava, Parkes was acting as Orderly to Lord George Paget, the Commanding Officer of the 4th Queen's Own Light Dragoons, who referred to him as "a fine specimen of an Englishman". In this role, Parkes needed to stay close to both Paget and Trumpeter Hugh Crawford who relayed the Commanding Officer's orders to the troops. During the Charge of the Light Brigade, the 4th Light Dragoons reached the Russian guns where savage hand to hand fighting was taking place. Parkes rode past his Colonel shouting anxiously "Where's my chief? Who's seen the Colonel?" Paget replied "here I am, my boy, I'm all right" Parkes then rejoined his Colonel and the Trumpeter.

At Wolve Spruit on 5 July 1900, despite being mounted on a wounded horse himself, Richardson rode back through very heavy enemy fire to rescue a fellow Canadian who had been unhorsed and wounded. His VC is on display as part of this special presentation. Three members of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, Lieutenants H.Z.C. Cockburn and R.E.W. Turner and Sergeant E.J. Holland, won the VC during the desperate rear-guard action at Leliefontein on 7 November 1900. Both Cockburn and Turner had held off large groups of Boers at close range, allowing two Canadian field guns to escape capture. In the process, both officers were wounded, and Cockburn was captured. Sergeant Holland kept several parties of Boers at bay with the fire from his Colt machine gun . With his gun jammed and in imminent danger of capture, he detached it from its carriage and carried it off to safety.

Because some of the Australian state badges were originaly created to represent the Governor (as distinct from the Colony) they generally showed some element of British royal heraldry - the main criteria being that it be different from similar badges used in other parts of the Empire. In a rare display of independence (with respect to flags) the Victorian Government unilaterally approved the flag design anyway. The medal has been, and indeed still is, only awarded for exceptional courage displayed by members of the armed forces. Many recipients of the V.C. have had it awarded posthumously. Those who have lived to receive their V.C. from the reigning monarch have passed the remainder of their lives as members of a very special, almost revered group. The recipients of no other medal in the world excite as much interest from military historians as do winners of the Victoria Cross. Indeed, to this day files are kept at the National Army Museum on all the soldiers, sailors and airmen who has won the award, and these files are updated monthly. Any new information about the recipients, as well as articles, pictures or information as to the whereabouts of the medal itself are included. The Victoria Cross is one of the most valuable medals in the world. This is not for the value of the metal from which it is made; indeed it is nothing but a bit of bronze attached to a dark red ribbon. The Victoria Cross is valuable for what it represents: each is a unique piece of military history and, when occasionally they are sold by collectors or by families desperate for money, their value is measured in tens of thousands of pounds. Many V.C.s have been won by people who have given their lives to save others or have been so reckless with their lives that by any reasonable odds they should have lost them. This is the special appeal of the V.C. winner to me, and as a schoolmaster that is why I seek to tell my pupils about those from the School who have won them; I believe that people need their heroes and heroines. Sadly, this is an unfashionable idea and few of our present pupils know much about those Old Bromsgrovians who won the award. However, a knowledge of the history of the School and the achievements of its former pupils is instrumental in promoting high standards from current pupils and instilling a sense of pride in the School. A good school is instrumental in forming the values and beliefs of its pupils: it is therefore, in some small part, a school's achievement if one its former pupils wins the Victoria Cross.

Legion branches across Canada, in the United States and Europe lowered their flags to half mast Wednesday after Ernest Alvia (Smoky) Smith, Canada's last winner of the Victoria Cross, died at home in Vancouver. He was 91. He was born in New Westminster, B.C., on May 3, 1914, just weeks before the start of the First World War and earned his fame in the Second World War. He was a joyful man with an impish smile who savoured a good cigar, a well-aged scotch and the attentions of ladies the world over. Far from a natural-born diplomat, however, it was his fierce fighting ability that vaulted Smith - nicknamed Smoky in school because of his running ability - into the company of royalty, presidents and prime ministers.

The Victoria Cross Ribbon Crimson (described as red in the Warrants), 1.5 inches wide. Originally the ribbon was dark blue or the Royal Navy and crimson for the Army. Shortly before the Royal Air Force was formed on 1st April 1918 the King approved the recommendation that what had been the Army ribbon should be adopted by all recipients. When the ribbon is worn alone a miniature of the Cross is pinned on it, a bar being indicated by a second miniature worn beside the first (when first approved in 1916, a single miniature indicated the award of a bar; from 1917 this was changed to the current configuration). Suspension By a straight bar, slotted for the ribbon, with a V-lug below, made in one piece. The front of the bar is ornamented with laurels (the die-cast bars having the leaves set more closely together), and the reverse engraved with details of the recipient. The Cross and suspender bar are joined by a small link which passes through the lugs of both components. On earlier issues the link is completely circular and the inside bottom of the V-lug slightly recessed to accommodate it. Later the link was made oval and the lug not recessed.
