The full citation reads as follows:
Private Beharry carried out two individual acts of great heroism by which he saved the lives of his comrades. Both were in direct face of the enemy, under intense fire, at great personal risk to himself (one leading to him sustaining very serious injuries). His valour is worthy of the highest recognition. In the early hours of the 1st May 2004 Beharry's company was ordered to replenish an isolated Coalition Forces' outpost located in the centre of the troubled city of Al Amarah. He was the driver of a platoon commander's Warrior armoured fighting vehicle. His platoon was the company's reserve force and was placed on immediate notice to move. The vehicle was hit again by sustained rocket-propelled grenade attack from insurgent fighters in the alleyways and on rooftops around his vehicle
As the main elements of his company were moving into the city to carry out the replenishment, they were re-tasked to fight through a series of enemy ambushes in order to extract a foot patrol that had become pinned down under sustained small arms and heavy machine-gun fire and improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade attack.

Search Military Honours and Awards The system for the award of Decorations and other Honours to Service personnel underwent a major revision in 1993, when the practice of having, in some categories of award, different medals for Officers and Other Ranks was discontinued. Thus for example the Military Medal is no longer awarded to Other Ranks, who instead are now eligible for the Military Cross which had previously been reserved for Officers and Warrant Officers. Most of the awards, save only for membership of Orders, can be given posthumously. Where a medal is won by an individual more than once, the second and subsequent awards are denoted by a Bar worn on the medal ribbon. Thus the phrase DFC and Bar (sometimes shortened to DFC* ) denotes the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross twice to the same individual. Three Servicemen have won the Victoria Cross and Bar - Captain Martin-Leake (1902 and 1914), Captain Chavasse (1916 and posthumously 1917), and Captain Upham (1941 and 1942). The Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for gallantry that a British and Commonwealth serviceman can achieve. The Victoria Cross is forever linked with acts of extreme bravery and the original document associated with the medal stated that it could only be awarded for “gallantry of the highest order”. The Victoria Cross had its origins in the Crimean War. This was the first major war that was reported on by war correspondents in the field. In this case, William Howard Russell of “The Times” reported on the bravery of the common soldier and pushed for a bravery award that could be given to the common soldier in recognition of his bravery. At this time, only senior officers were awarded medals for bravery as it was deemed that it was their leadership that drove men on to victory. The House of Commons took up Russell’s idea. MP’s from the Commons decided, on December 19 th , 1854, that the Queen, Victoria, should create a medal: “an order of merit for distinguished and prominent personal gallantry to which every grade and individual from the highest to the lowest may be admissible.” Senior military figures were against such a medal. They believed that the strength of the British Army lay in its ability to fight in formations on the command of an officer. There was a concern that individuals might engage in acts of individual bravery (in an attempt to win the medal) and break the strength of a formation in doing so. However, the idea had one major supporter – Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. His support for the medal quickly won the backing of Victoria herself. The objections of senior military commanders were overridden. Victoria and Albert ordered the War Office to come up with an idea for such a medal and Prince Albert suggested its name – the Victoria Cross.

Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime. It was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria and made retrospective to 1854 to cover the period of the Crimea War. It is possible for any serviceman to obtain this award. The Victoria Cross is designed in the form of the Maltese Cross, in the centre of the medal is a lion guardant standing upon the Royal Crown. The words "For Valour" are inscribed below. The Victoria Cross is suspended from a bar by a red ribbon. On the reverse of the cross the date of the act of bravery is inscribed, along with the name, rank and unit of the recipient. The Australian War Memorial displays 59 Victoria Crosses, the largest publicly held collection in the world. The Victoria Crosses are displayed together in the Memorial's Hall of Valour. These VC's have been donated, or loaned, to the Memorial by individuals, families, or by unit associations, to be displayed for the nation. Included in the VC collection are the medals of Sir Neville Howse who won the award in the Boer War becoming Australia's first VC. There are eight (of 9) nine crosses awarded to Australians for the Gallipoli campaign including the medals of the legendary Albert Jacka VC MC and bar. The collection also includes the cross of the first Australian winner of the Second World War, Corporal John Edmondson who died in the exploit at Tobruk for which the award was made. The medals of Bomber Command hero Sir Hughie Edwards; the medals of the Tom Derrick VC DCM who was mourned by the nation when he ultimately fell at Tarakan in 1945; and the medals of Warrant Officer 'Dasher' Wheatley who fought a fatal 'last stand' action beside a wounded mate in Vietnam are displayed.

Introduction
This section deals with various people who have been awarded The Victoria Cross for bravery. It is the UK's highest award for bravery by a military person in the presence of the enemy. In order of precedence, the Victoria Cross is the highest award, and is the most senior decoration. It takes precedence above all other medals and orders, including the George Cross Only one family (the Seagrim Brothers ) has won both the Victoria Cross and George Cross; a different brother winning each of the medals. Only three people have won the Victoria Cross twice (VC and Bar). Click here for the details of these special people. The most recent awards of the Victoria Cross were made during the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict For an extremely interesting series of articles about some of their former pupils, who were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, visit the "We Remember Them" section at Summer Field School 's web site.

March 1, 1945: The Hochwald Forest in Germany is the scene of an incredible act of Canadian bravery. In his first and last attack as commander of 'C' Company of the Essex Scottish Regiment, Maj. Frederick Tilston acts more like an action hero than an officer. After a 500-metre dash behind a barrage of artillery shells and through a belt of wire three metres deep, Tilston leaps into the enemy trenches. Next Printer-friendly page Send this page to a friend Add this clip to your personal bookmarks Firing his Sten gun from his hip, Tilston clears the trench and then races toward the forest. He clears out a machine gun post using a hand grenade, and leads his remaining men into hand-to-hand combat. Tilston has been wounded in the head and the hip, yet he consolidates his troops and holds the position against counterattack. Six times he makes an insane dash to a neighbouring company to get more bullets and grenades for his men.

Pte Beharry receives the Victoria Cross for two separate acts of outstanding gallantry of the highest order whilst based in Al Amarah, Maysan Province, Iraq, in 2004. Whilst back on duty on 11 June 2004, Pte Beharry was again driving the lead Warrior vehicle of his platoon through Al Amarah when this vehicle was ambushed. A rocket propelled grenade hit the vehicle and Pte Beharry received serious head injuries. Other rockets hit the vehicle incapacitating his commander and injuring several of the crew. Despite his very serious injuries, from which he is still recovering, Pte Beharry showed great strength of character, taking control of his vehicle and driving it out of the ambush area before losing consciousness. He married Lynthia, his childhood sweetheart and fellow Grenadian, on 15 February 2002. Lynthia is a Civil Servant and works for the MoD. His parents live in Grenada with his four brothers and two sisters. Another sister lives in England.

Flt. Lt. David S.A. Lord VC. DFC. On the morning of September 19th 1944, Douglas C47 'Dakota' "YS - DM" piloted by Flt. Lt. David S.A.Lord DFC along with others of 271 Squadron RAF Transport Command took off from their base at Down Ampney in Gloustershire to re-supply beleaguered Allied troops at Arnhem in Holland. The Allied Airborne troops had been surrounded and were being pressed into a small area heavily defended by anti-aircraft guns. The air crews were told of this and also of the disastrous circumstances that many were enduring and so to ensure accuracy they were ordered to fly at 900 feet when dropping their containers.
While flying at 1,500 feet near Arnhem the starboard wing of Flt Lt Lord's Dakota was hit twice by anti-aircraft fire, as a result the starboard engine was set on fire. He would have been justified to leave the main stream of aircraft and either tried to return to his base in England or even abandon the aircraft altogether, but on learning that all his crew were un-injured and that the dropping zone was just 3 minutes away he decided he would complete his mission as the troops on the ground were in such dire need of supplies.
As for Flight Lieutenant D.S.A. Lord DFC. For continuing with his damaged and burning aircraft doing two dropping runs and remaining at the controls thereby giving his crew their best chance a escaping he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He lies buried alongside his crew and the dispatchers in the cemetery at Oosterbeeck.
