Links The Rise of Edward St John Daniel Edward St John Daniel was born at the family home 1 Windsor Terrace, Clifton, Bristol on 17 th January 1837, the first child of a well-known Bristol attorney, Edward Daniel. His mother, Barbara Bedford, was the granddaughter of Henry Beauchamp St John, the 12 th Baron St John, and there is evidence that Edward was known as "St John" (sinjon) by his family. Edward St John Daniel was also the first cousin 12 times removed of Henry Tudor, King Henry VII (1457-1509), through their common ancestor, Henry's grandmother, Margaret Beauchamp (c. 1410-1482). May the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus touch the world with healing and peace. During this month of September, the Passionist Community at Holy Cross
celebrates the Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross and like our Founder
St Paul of the Cross, we embrace the 'triumph' of the Cross as a sign of hope and
of God's love for us all; we continue to pray for peace in our homes, throughout our Nation and the world, especially in those areas where people are suffering from war, violence and injustice; may we all grow in awareness of the depth of God's love for us, and that by this love, may we be moved to love one another as God loves us.

Recipients of the Victoria Cross Prior to 1914 By Name of Recipient
Instituted by Queen Victoria on 5 February, 1856, the Victoria Cross was intended to reward individual acts of bravery. It was the lesson of the Crimean War that showed the lack of any adequate way to reward brave actions by lower ranking officers and enlisted men.The Decoration is made of bronze, originally from captured Russian cannons in the Crimea, and so its worth lay only in its honor and not its intrinsic value. Always difficult to earn, it has remained to this day one of the most honorable and sought after rewards for military service to country.
The names on this list show the recipient's rank when the award was granted and subsequent rank achieved up to 1906 in parenthesis ( ). Recipients alive in 1906 have an asterix * after their name. Regimental unit names are those in use when the particular V.C. was granted, and the date listed is when the act of bravery was performed. No Victoria Crosses were awarded from 1905 until the First World War in 1914, so these 522 first awards stand in a group by themselves.

Text Only Site Map About Us IWM London ... Frequently Asked Questions The Victoria Cross When was the VC instituted?
The Victoria Cross was instituted by a Royal Warrant dated 29 January 1856, but was made retrospective to the autumn of 1854 to cover the period of the Crimean War. Who designed the VC?
Prince Albert, the Prince Consort was much involved in the decision to institute the Victoria Cross - but the popular idea that the Prince designed the Cross is not supported in any of the surviving documents. It is thought that the manufacturers were responsible for the design. However, it was Queen Victoria who chose the inscription on the obverse. Who makes the VC?
Hancocks (Jewellers) Ltd, London, have made all the Victoria Crosses since the inception of the award. What is the VC made of?
All VCs are made from bronze. The metal comes from melted down breeches of guns captured from the Russians at Sebastopol in the Crimea. The rough cast Crosses are then individually hand finished; each is therefore unique. The remaining ingot of bronze, believed to be sufficient for a further 80 Crosses, is held by the Ministry of Defence. What colour is the ribbon of the VC?

Information on Crosscountry skiing in North East Victoria starting from Falls Creek, based in Mount Beauty. Includes trail maps, tips and suggested tours.
http://kiewaview.com/cross_country.htm
Cross Country / Nordic Skiing
Victoria has a huge area of alpine country suitable for cross country skiing in winter, greater than the European Alps. The very best of this, is the sprawling expanse of hills, valleys and broad ridges of the Bogong High Plains. A number of mountains rise out of this plain and the area is dotted with historical cattle men's huts. This area is easily accessible from Falls Creek. Falls Creek resort itself has the unique Nordic Bowl. This is a sheltered area of flat and gentle slopes ideal for cross country ski learning and tuition and cross country race training. It is also a rallying point for ski tourers heading out into the national park. From Windy Corner, it is an easy ski of less than one kilometer to the Nordic Bowl. Within the resort there is a network of 20 km of groomed cross country trails and this is the key location in Victoria for cross country ski racing. The total groomed trails available from Falls Creek is between 30-60 km at any given time. Falls Creek is also the site of Australia's premier international cross country skiing event. The
