CAMPING is permitted anywhere on Ottawa National Forest lands, unless otherwise prohibited. Bear are not uncommon anywhere in the forest, and bear precautions should be taken. INFORMATION: Forest Supervisor, Ottawa National Forest, 2100 E. Cloverland Drive, Ironwood MI 49938. (906) 932-1330. Other information sources: Hutchins Guide, available from NCTA Trail Store. MAPS: The Forest brochures on the NCNST may be adequate to get through this section, as are sketch maps here, in the Michigan Mapset and the Hutchins Guide; however, in view of the history of sporadic trail maintenance and marking, and the ruggedness of the terrain, topos of the area are highly recommended. Be careful with local maps; Forest Service road numbers are not the same on all maps. The numbers used here are the ones on the most recent available forest information. Several people have remarked on the ruggedness and difficulty of the western part of this section. "The topography of the Trap Hills stretch is the most rugged I encountered on this hike," Chet Fromm wrote of his 1991-95 section hike though this area. "This may be the most difficult section of the trail in upper Michigan," Byron Hutchins agrees. In addition, trail maintenance has been sporadic due to Forest Service funding problems, though there have been recent efforts to do a better job. But, those who are willing to dare the difficulties and accept the challenges will be rewarded with many overlooks with outstanding views.

Victoria Cross Victoria Cross, Source: Veterans Affairs Canada The Victoria Cross (official post-nominal letters "VC") is the highest award for valour that can be awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces of any rank in any service and civilians under military command. It is only awarded for bravery "in the face of the enemy". The medal takes the form of a cross patt©e, 1.375 inches (35 mm) wide, bearing a crown surmounted by a lion, and the inscription "FOR VALOUR". This was originally to have been "FOR BRAVERY", until it was changed on the recommendation of Queen Victoria , who thought some might erroneously consider that only the recipients of the VC were brave in battle. The medal, suspension bar and link weigh about 0.87

Public Lecture
Thursday 4 August 2005 @ 06:30 pm - 08:00 pm
Basement Theatre, Sidney Myer Asia Centre, The University of Melbourne
Uncertainty over the fate of loved ones causes untold suffering during wartime and disasters. Conflict and disaster disrupts normal communication channels, families are scattered and displaced from their homes, and parents and children go missing. Australian Red Cross, together with Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies all over the world, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, work to alleviate the suffering caused through this separation and the loss of contact between family members.
The search for loved ones may take months or even years. It may result in a joyous reunion, but not all searches have happy endings. Every year, the Australian Red Cross provides humanitarian assistance to hundreds of families and individuals. Case studies to be discussed include tracing in Vietnam and Cambodia in the 1970s, the Bali Bombings, and Sri Lanka post-Tsunami.
Speakers include: Bev Patterson, Co-ordinator of International Humanitarian Law (Australian Red Cross Victoria), Megan Goodwin and Hang Vo, International Tracing and Refugee Services (Australian Red Cross National Office) and Mrs Hap Lu, a former Red Cross client of the tracing services who will discuss her first hand experiences.

Red Cross Murray Marathon
Everybody can do it. You'll never forget it!
Known as the longest annual canoe race in the world, covering a distance of 404km in five days, the event takes paddlers from Yarrawonga through to Swan Hill, in the heart of Victoria, Australia. Wholly owned and organised by the Australian Red Cross, funds raised during the Marathon are channelled back into the provision of vital community programs and emergency services provided by the Australian Red Cross, including Patient Transport, Emergency First Aid, Registration and Catering.
Attracting over 800 participants, 300 volunteers and up to 3000 support crew, the event moves as a tent city from town to town. Paddlers share the experience of being challenged, the magic and camaraderie of paddling down the Murray River and in between all this fun, supporting the Australian Red Cross, Victoria.
The Murray Marathon began in 1969 as a fundraiser for the Australian Red Cross, Victoria and today it still continues to be.

Victoria Cross Society The interest in the Victoria Cross continues to attract military historians, collectors and the general public alike. Ever since its inception in 1856, there has been a mystique that has surrounded this simple bronze cross that shows no sign of fading. Indeed, the reverse is true.
As the years pass, so the list of surviving recipients grows ever smaller. Fortunately, also diminishing are the opportunities for fresh medals to be awarded. It is important to keep alive the memory of this select band of exceptionally brave men, and it is with this view in mind that we invite you to join our Society. STOP PRESS! Victoria Cross Awards 1854-1914
A Series of Informational Articles
Edited by Stephen Herold
The foundation of the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria in 1856 marked the recognition by hitherto aristocratic governments of the value of the brave fulfillment of duty by ordinary soldiers. As such it is a significant social as well as military event. Given only for the most conspicuous gallantry, it remains perhaps the most prestigious and valued decoration for exceptional service in the service of country. The following articles present the history of this decoration up to the beginning of the First World War.

Our Shelter Is Under Threat of Closure This is a report on a metting i had with Mr John McCrory representing the Minister of Agriculture, and Mr Malcome Scheele representing the City of Manningham Local Laws, under whose jurisdiction the Blue Cross now operates. Under the new Code of Practive for Animal Shelters, minimum standards have been set for accomodating animals, and this is a step in the right direction, but therecommended minimum size for dog pens of twenty-four square feet or 8 feet by 3 feet, is disgusting. At Blue Cross our kittens have much bigger pens than this. The Code of Practice was drwn up on the recommendation of the MAJOR animal welfare shelters, i.e. RSPCA and Lost Dogs Home, and from their point of view is a giant step forward. it ensures that dogs will have a minimum space, will have hygienic conditions and will have protection from the elements. This is exactly what is said about battery farmed hens and this act is treating welfare shelter dogs in the same manner. The likely outlook for them will be the mandatory eight days in cramped quarters whichs erve as their bedroom, recreation area and toilet, and then, unless they are among the lucky very few who are re-homed, join the queue for euthanising. When the Code of Practice was drwan up, no consideration was given to Blue Cross - the only shelter which houses its dogs in comfortable, clean kennels at night and allows them to spend their days in spacious outdoor exercise areas with a compatible canine companion. In fact, no provision was made for exercising the dogs apart form a consolation ten minutes per day under human supervision, and with no other dogs. On no account are welfare dogs allowed to socialise or mix with other dogs!

Cross Country / Nordic Skiing
Victoria has a huge area of alpine country suitable for cross country skiing in winter, greater than the European Alps. The very best of this, is the sprawling expanse of hills, valleys and broad ridges of the Bogong High Plains. A number of mountains rise out of this plain and the area is dotted with historical cattle men's huts. This area is easily accessible from Falls Creek. Falls Creek resort itself has the unique Nordic Bowl. This is a sheltered area of flat and gentle slopes ideal for cross country ski learning and tuition and cross country race training. It is also a rallying point for ski tourers heading out into the national park. From Windy Corner, it is an easy ski of less than one kilometer to the Nordic Bowl. Within the resort there is a network of 20 km of groomed cross country trails and this is the key location in Victoria for cross country ski racing. The total groomed trails available from Falls Creek is between 30-60 km at any given time. Falls Creek is also the site of Australia's premier international cross country skiing event. The

VICTORIA CROSS
VICTORIA CROSS
The Victoria Cross is the highest British decoration awarded to members of the armed forces for valour while on active service, and was bestowed upon New Zealand servicemen in all of the three major wars in which New Zealand forces were engaged overseas. It was also awarded to a New Zealand militiaman and to 14 Royal Navy and Imperial Army personnel during the Second Maori War of 1860–72. The original Royal Warrant instituting the Victoria Cross, dated 29 January 1856, restricted the award to “Our Naval and Military Services”, and required submissions from “Our Commander-in-Chief of Our Army” before an award could be made. In 1864, when Captain Charles Heaphy of the Auckland Militia was recommended for the Victoria Cross by the General Officer Commanding the Forces in New Zealand, the award was not approved because it was held that locally raised forces did not constitute an authorised part of the Imperial Army and were, therefore, ineligible under a strict interpretation of the existing Royal Warrant. Further strong representations made on Heaphy's behalf pointed out that he had initially been recommended by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Henry Havelock, himself a Victoria Cross winner during the Indian Mutiny, and by whom he had been placed in command of a detachment of Imperial troops. Eventually, on 1 January 1867, the Royal Warrant was amended and in the preamble to the amendment, drew specific attention to the operations “undertaken against the Insurgent Native Tribes of Our Colony of New Zealand” and the then ineligibility of “persons serving in the Local Forces of Our said Colony” for the high distinction of the Victoria Cross. The Warrant went on to authorise the award to “persons aforesaid provided that it be established in any case that the person was serving with Our Troops, under command of a General or other Officer”. Heaphy's Victoria Cross was gazetted a few weeks later, being the first awarded to a member of a colonial force as well as the first to a non-regular serviceman.
